I just tried Slacko 5.5 (kernel 3.2.33) as live CD and heard onboard sound for the first time.

Hi Stuart,

Having reviewed the info in this thread I finally got sound working correctly with 412 by adding this to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
etc/rc.d/rc.alsa start

This made alsa remember my settings for this card es1978 on my Compaq Armada E500.

By the way it is a Full HD install of '412.

Hi Darren

Happened to be browsing the forum and remembered what you said about contacting patriot for the Alsa upgrade and came across a post by mikeb http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 207#383268 so I reckon he may be the guy to get the alsa update files from.
