Known problems with LxQtPup

Posted: Sun 27 Jul 2014, 17:55
by peebee
Updated for LxQt version 0.8.0

Reserved for a list of known problems

- its big - more than 3 times the size of LXDE - due to the need for QT
- no "recently used" menu item
- no run menu item
- Leave menu item isn't customisable (or rather I haven't found how to)
- rather too many desktop configuration tools.....
- systray items have a black background (on my desktop with nvidia graphics)
- lxqt-panel is rather basic cf lxpanel or lxpanelx (e.g. no autohide, no transparency)
- some LxPup options don't work - e.g. top panel, right clicks (wbar does work however)
- some Porteus menu items don't show due to having unrecognized categories (Porteus method only)

Version 2

by peebee
1-aug-2014 Version 2 has been uploaded.

Links in post #1 have been updated.

Trash is now working. :D

More menu icons now display - however there is still a problem with the puppy svg icons which would need them all to be edited (I think) - see the diagnostic output attached.

I know the edits that are needed, however it needs automating....

Version 3

3-aug-2014 Version 3 has been uploaded

- menu icons fixed :D
- Compton compositor added and activated

LXQt 0.8.0 Is Out!

Posted: Sat 18 Oct 2014, 09:56
by peebee
http://lxqt.org/ says:
LXQt 0.8.0 Is Out!
After several months of hard work, the 0.8.0 version of LXQt is out, bringing with it full Qt 5 compatibility, two beautiful new themes and a lot of new features, performance improvements and bugfixes.

About LXQt
LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment.
LXQt 0.8.0 is a fast and stable desktop environment already usable on production desktops.
It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a Classic Desktop with a modern Look & Feel.
Not clear if it will still work with Qt4? As far as I can see there is no Puppy support available for Qt5? Is there?

I will keep an eye on pkgs.org and when a Slackware build becomes available I'll try a Puppy Slacko version.

LxQt alternative way....

by peebee
An alternative way to try LxQt on Puppy is:

1. frugal install LxPup14.10 (Slacko flavour)

2. download the Porteus lxqt module 003-lxqt.xzm Porteus-v3.1-rc1 version

3. rename from .xzm to .sfs and place it in the frugal install folder

4. load the .sfs with sfs-load-on-the-fly

5. install the attached pet and activate LxQt

The Porteus module includes Qt4 so there is no need to separately load in this method.

This is still version 0.7.0 of LxQt - I'll keep an eye out for an 0.8.0 module from Porteus.

http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?t=3977&p=28619 says
003-lxqt.xzm:
- Created with 0.7 version as a base (0.8 will be used in rc2 release)
Cheers

Interesting .. I've been curious about LXQT but haven't tried it as it's still so preliminary.

I won't try this either given the many steps required :) .. but I want to ask, how's it work? How's it compare to LXDE or JWM? I have Lubuntu as a DE option on my desktop and I don't love it; the panel is super buggy.

And why is LXQT so big?? I heard this before too, with respect to memory usage though. It's not going to win many fans if the memory or disk size blows way past LXDE.

Well, except that it's reported that no one is working on LXDE at all, so, you know, maybe eventually there won't be a choice, hehe.

It's basically similar to LXDE but with rough edges and missing features which may be improved in v 0.8.0 which is now out.

Neither LXDE nor LxQt are much like jwm.....

Don't know which panel Lubuntu uses - but LxPanelX in LxPup seems ok in all my tests.

LxQt is big (to add to Puppy) because it needs Qt4 which is big. Qt5 which LxQt is moving to is even bigger!!!

LXDE compnents are being worked on still - for instance PcManFM was released at version 1.2.3 just recently.

Version 0.8.0 available

The LxQt module from Porteus-v3.1 has become available.

This is now version 0.8.0 of LxQt. There have been some definite improvements over version 0.7.0 but there are still some deficiencies which are listed in post #2.

It can be installed on top of LxPup14.12 as follows:

1. frugal install LxPup14.12 (Slacko flavour)

2. download the Porteus lxqt module 003-lxqt.xzm Porteus-v3.1 version

3. rename from .xzm to .sfs and place it in the frugal install folder

4. load the .sfs with sfs-load-on-the-fly

5. install the attached pet and activate LxQt

The Porteus module includes Qt4 so there is no need to separately load in this method.

Already available on most mainstream distributions and with partial FreeBSD support. Try it out at home or in a VM!

Hi, peebee.

Just tried it. First impressions:
* nice appearance

* a bit sluggish on this AMD Sempron 3100+ (jwm is snappier)

* after trying jwm, how do you come back to the lxqt environment?
What's the proper xwin command?

Code: Select all

xwin lxqt-session
doesn't work...

* ROX-Filer should be easily accessible from an icon on the lxqt desktop.
It's handier and quicker for managing files than PCMan, for me, anyway
(after so many years of being a traditional Puppy-ist!).

I complain only about details, so you must have done a good job of it! ;)

Multimedia in LXPUP QT 14.12

I've updated LxQtPup to version 14.12 with the released Porteus LxQt module. . Used this morning and :

SM player and Gnome Mplayer fail reading videos done with SimpleScreenRecorder (LXPUPQt 14.12).
But VLC in tahrpup can read them. I suppose there are missing libs under LXPUPQT
Tried reading more videos ( known as correct), errors nothing with both players.
Default corrected by the pet provided here below topics

Hi Pelo

I suspect this is the same problem as we had with Slacko64 which is also built using a Porteus module:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 714#818714

Please reload Mplayer from:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 0-i486.pet

and see if that cures the problem - if it does I will update the LxQtPup iso.

Cheers

The more users inform what is misworking, the best will be the Puppy.
Misworking ?? Is that en english word ? No time to verify.
I must setxkbmap fr in rxvt terminal each session. Pls take a glance at it too. New users should'nt succeed having they french keyboard if they ignore la manipulation to do
