How to use NetGear N900 USB wifi in Precise 5.7.1? (Solved)

Apparently Precise Puppy's network wizard doesn't even know it exists.

According to wikidevi, the WNDA4100 first officially appears in kernel 3.12. The vendor provides the source code, which I have compiled for Slacko k3.4.52. It does recognize your 0846:9012 device.

However, the package is larger than 256KB. If you want it for Slacko, I will have to upload it elsewhere. I don't have a newer development setup.

Thanks. as suggested in an earlier post of yours, I already tried lsmod and dmesg but got nothing:

@rcrsn51, I'm not married to Precise. If you can find a place to upload it, I'll be happy to give it a try. Otherwise, is there any Puppy I could download that has the newer kernel?

Okay I got it, and thanks. I happen to have a DVD of Slacko 5.7.0 PAE that I burned just the other day, so I'll try your .pet with that first and report back.

I assume the way to use the .pet is to click on it to install it, then with the Connect wizard try to use the NetGear N900. Does that sound about right?

Anyway, that's what I did and it didn't work. I couldn't even find rt3573 in the list of modules in the network wizard. Is that because this is the wrong kernel (3.10.32), PAE, or am I just missing something? I don't really expect your .pet to work with this Puppy, I'm just trying to see if I'm using it correctly before I download the right version of Slacko. Surely it ought to show up somewhere, even if it won't work.

1. Install the PET.
2. Unplug/replug the adapter.
3. Check lsmod for rt3573sta.

Done. The .pet shows up in Slacko's package manager but nowhere else as far I can find. Nothing changes when I unplug/replug the adapter, not even any lights flash that I can see. lsmod | grep rt2 still gives no result.

@ardvark, I know the .pet probably won't work. I'm just practicing using it with the Puppy I have at hand. :)

Unless you are installing this in the Puppy for which it was built (k3.4.52), nothing is going to happen.

Okay, I'll have to find Slacko 56-4G-non-PAE somewhere and download it. Any recommendation? I forgot where I found the Slacko I have? :oops:

Thanks, I'm downloading it now. I found several other Slacko isos I had squirreled away on a flash drive, but none of them had the right kernel. Your .pet wouldn't work with any of them.

Success! I downloaded slacko-5.6-4G-NON-PAE.iso, burned it to a DVD using burniso2cd, booted the DVD and installed your .pet. The network wizard picked up the wifi thingy as soon as I plugged it into the USB port. So I saved that configuration on the DVD (making the DVD into a multisession Puppy). Since it was easy to do, I also installed that Slacko in a USB flash drive, which is much smaller and boots much faster than the DVD. I'll just leave the flash drive plugged into the computer, a Dell Studio Hybrid 140g that I bought surplus for $65. - who could pass up a deal like that? - and not even use the unreliable (in my experience) hard disk drive.

Excellent. The lesson to be learned here is that kernel modules are version-specific. There is never any point to trying them in a different Puppy.

A final note: Fatdog64-700, Slacko64-5.9.1 and Tahr-5.8.3 all could use the N900 from the very first boot of the live DVD.
