PostPosted: Fri 11 Jul 2014, 22:24    Post_subject:  How to configure Dell Latitude touch pad?
Sub_title: synclient says "no synaptics driver is loaded"

Hi all - I need assistance to solve this problem please.

I am using:
DELL Latitude laptop
Puppy precise 5.4.3
Frugal Install

My touchpad works and operates normally, but I cannot configure it, because whenever I try to run the synclient it tells me that "no synaptics driver is loaded"

My xorg.conf file contains entries to load the driver
The xorg.o log file seems to show it loaded without error

What could the problem be? Thanks in advance - any help much appreciated.

If it works, what aspect needs configuring?

Retry after running this line of code:
Code:
modprobe synaptics_i2c

If no good, paste your "lsmod" output..

Please >> cat /sys/class/input/mouse*/device/name

Any 'not found(s)' here? >> ldd /usr/bin/flsynclient

Is 543 a hand-me-down or can you run a later build?

The exact Latitude model we're dealing with?

Sorry for the delayed reply - I can only work on this over the weekend.

I have added the output output which you asked for.

The exact model is DELL Latitude E6420

This is not a hand me down. It is a standard precise puppy 5.4.3 which I am very happy with - except for this annoying touchpad problem.

I would be just as happy to find out how to completely disable the touchpad. If I had a script to do that, then I could simply turn off the touchpad operation while I am using it 'as a desktop'.

thanks again

No - it is exactly the same whether I boot with the USB mouse or without it.

Do you have access during a live boot? Non-existent hw won't register.

After Pup's splash screen, YOU type >> puppy pfix=ram with the usb unplugged.

And though I'm not certain which, I'd say the usb mouse module needs to be blacklisted. Use PupScan.

BootManager has this option along with giving preference to one mod over another. Perhaps explore a bit..

Thanks for your willingness to help me Semme

I booted with pfix=ram without the USB mouse connected. The "mouse pad" continued to work normally as before.

I looked at the modules which were already blacklisted - and found that the usbmouse module was already listed.

I ran the pupscan and the only item which I could see that "might" be relevant was the usbhid driver loaded for the "USB Touchcontroller"

I really do not know what I am doing - but I would really like some way of turning off this mousepad while I am on the desk and have a usb mouse connected - but of course, I also need to ensure it is activated when I am using the laptop as a laptop.

If I could only understand which module is actually controlling the mousepad - then at least I would have some starting point for experimentation. At the moment the damn thing just seems to work and I don't know what is driving it.\

For what it's worth the touchpad driver on my Dell inspiron 1525 is named as "AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint" when I use Linux puppy ...

Quote:

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0008 Version=7321
N: Name="AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio2/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input2
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse1 event2
B: EV=b
B: KEY=420 0 70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=1000003

[ put cat /proc/bus/input/devices into a terminal to see a list of all input devices ]
