slacko-6.0 beta 2
01micko,
Any news?
Are you making any progress on getting this Slacko 6 past beta 2 status?
Seems to me like this has stalled and nothing is being done to get to final release.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

here's a version of gweled the game without sound, that way I wouldn't have to include a mikmod libs, I compiled mixmod statically that broke the sound anyways which allowed me to compile it without sound.

He's commented before about being very busy with exams and stuff. As someone who's recently started a new full time job and is also trying to make time for study along with everything else I know how he feels!bigpup wrote:01micko,

I wanted to open a comic book file for my daughter and couldn't find anything small, so I tried compiling evince but poppler has issues with compiling, I know when I compiled evince on 2.14X, I patched poppler, Evince is a tricky thing to compile, due to the extra deps that it uses, I tend to remove most of them and manage to compile it, I did compile it on slacko, but the PDF plugin was broken, The comic book worked.
The package I made 3yrs ago still works on this Slacko. I personally would toss epdfview and use evince, the reason why is because it opens not just pdf, but comics, impressed documents, tiff and pixbuffer files.

Ok I wanted a stable, quick loading, no extra lib version of gimp, Because lately the pets for gimp are around 20mb then they download a wack of libs, I personally make graphic's with pixels, lines etc, all versions of gimp do that, Plus edit PNG, JPG, XPM, ICO files. So why get the latest??, I compiled Gimp 2.4, I had work a bit with the sources to get to to compile, but the end result it compiled right. I removed gimp console/remote, because they weren't needed for the average user and take a few extra MB. I made a new Splash screen for 2.4. well it worked out to be 5.5MB pet, it loads quick and from what I've seen its very stable. Plus no extra deps, etc. So If your thinking of a good sized version of gimp, give this one a try. I didn't remove any plugins from it.

Also comparing the latest gimp vs this version, The newer one has a single window option that I do like, But on the other hand one feature I really hate is, when I go to save a file, I can't 'save as' a jpg,png etc, I have to export it. That export thing they are forcing us to do gets on my nerves, But 2.4, you can still save as. Which make me happy. I think 2.4 is going to be my go to version of gimp on Slacko.

Naaa, I've been lazy and just installing via the repo via the package manager, I've compiled gimp so many times in the past, Used to compile the latest releases, but never really enjoyed any new features, other than the single window, But I don't think with the amount of size difference around 4x the size as 2.4 its worth it, 2.4 is notably faster on startup, renders faster. Hmmm I should of checked resources between versions. 2.4 doesn't even use the gegl/babl libs either.gcmartin wrote:Yes @TTuuxxx, GIMP, the latest version, have been popping up everywhere with the feature you speak to. Did you happen to post the newer pet somewhere?

Transmission is default in this release but the MIME wasn't updated, here's a working MIME for torrents.

ttuuxxx,
Thanks for these programs.
Hope you are posting some of them in the Additional Software section of the forum.
That Gimp version "Puppyfied" looks really nice!!
What you are saying about the latest version of Gimp. sounds like they have reached the point of adding features, to the point of going backwards in usefulness.
Thanks for these programs.

Yes its 4 times larger plus extra deps , runs slower. Really for the 95% of the population 2.4 is perfect. I don't see a reason to update, others might want newer features at a price, but I don't see it that way When I'm designing things I'll take speed any day over new filters. 2.4 has lots of filters anyways like over 60 of them.bigpup wrote:ttuuxxx,

Full GIMP continues to pace or outpace Photoshop. With the new stuff showing up in smartDevices, and the new capabilities, there is much value in the full package, as well. Many new PUP users are still wrestling with PPM much less knowing how to manipulate missing items from packages like GIMP. So we must keep focus of the larger community as Puppy moves forward and make it as easy as possible for them to be productive without any efforts to give up.
Also, looking at one's size is not a good way of casting judgement on its value. Who among us would have thought we would be using terabyte drives today? Much less the RAM sizes we see in large and small devices along with processing (CPU) power?
I say this as I just saw a memo of a nonprofit guiding to remove all of the old 32bit PCs as there is no more space for the newer 64bit PCs coming in as donations. (They re-purpose donated PCs for other nonprofits, seniors, small education and nurseries, and retirement rehab sites in their city.) The world continues to move forward in time, no matter how we feel. Which reminds me: it is time I, too, clean up all the stuff accumulated (IDE drives & SCSI drives lacking storage sizes; nonPS2 keyboards and mice, old low-res cameras, token-ring and other LAN technologies sitting around, old monitors, and other old ideas that will never return to greatness. Man, this makes me realize how old I have gotten. WOW!

If you mean the 2.4Gimp package I posted, Its a full package that I stripped the bins/libs and updated a new splash screen, I didn't remove 1 single item, there is nothing removed, Its a full release of a older version of gimp that is smaller due to the release version/date. Users of slacko have the choice now, a much smaller version that doesn't need any new deps, or the latest version on the PPM that has all the latest gizmo filters.gcmartin wrote:Full GIMP continues to pace or outpace Photoshop.
