Ever heard of FireFox "Extended Support Release" (ESR) ?

#1 Post by Barkin »

Essentially it's FireFox browser about six-months behind the latest buggy cutting-edge version , see ...
mozilla.org wrote:Who should use Mozilla Firefox ESR?

Mozilla Firefox ESR is meant for organizations that manage their client desktops, including schools, businesses and other instituitions that want to offer Firefox. Users who want to get the latest features, performance enhancements and technologies in their browsing experience should download Firefox for personal use, as these improvements will only be available to ESR users several development cycles after being made available in Firefox for desktop.

IMO the latest version of FireFox (#30) is a nightmare , the ESR version, based on #24, seems much better to me.

Maybe someone could make a PET of FireFox ESR browser for Puppy users who want reliable browser rather than the latest buggy experiment from Mozilla.

You can just use the:

http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/moz ... sr.tar.bz2

download in combination with the shino's firefox-portable-0.6.tar.gz:

Ahh, but the ESR version is maintained, so any major-league security problems should get fixed within a month or sooner, whereas that's definitely not the case if you just use the old #24.
mozilla.org wrote:Maintenance of each ESR, through point releases, is limited to high-risk/high-impact security vulnerabilities and in rare cases may also include off-schedule releases that address live security vulnerabilities.

Its good to have the link to their ftp store.....

I wonder has anyone ever heard of anyone having a security leak using firefox?

I have used it for 10 years and usually hang on to older versions way after the update aggroo and never had a sniff.

Not sure where they are heading but it does seem a bit silly/dubious.
Long term stables make sense for those who actually need to USE their computers rather than impress others. :D

Yes I had several credit cards frauds but I don't know if firefox is accusable: I think the whole internet has been builded in this way so unsafe: into the deep web you can buy the credit card and its codes of almost everyone.

Hmm the only actual instances I know of (these amount to probably billions by now) have been where internet explorer/active x / trident/outlook express/msn messenger is present... whether in use or not.

Microsoft added unsafe gateways into their operating systems many years ago rather than the internet is inherently unsafe and nothing seems to counter that view.

No problem ...I keep looking for something concrete to define if these 'security' updates are really doing anything worthwhile.

If you are concerned with firefox, firefox-esr, privacy, security, I came across IceCat based on firefox 24 esr and improvements about privacy. Not tested but I think you can use the tar-ball with shino's firefox-portable:
