Check the permissions on /dev/usb/lp0. It needs to be 666. Other Puppies have a udev rule that sets this permission automatically.

Open the file 55-cups.rules in a text editor. Change

That will give the printer device node 666 permissions.

I have a desktop computer with Tahr 5.8.0.8 fresh frugal install connected
to a HP1050 using a local usb cable.

I went Cups - Admin - Add printer and it does show HP Deskjet 1050 j410
series...
I clicked on the circle and it continued to next screen ok.

My computer is 5 years old and has AMI bios v0702. You might check your
bios setup - usb configuration - Legacy usb support. I have mine set to
"enabled".

Have you tried a different usb cable?

1. Install the gstoraster patch
2. Install the 55-cups.rules patch
3. Install in CUPS as parallel:/dev/usb/lp0

But I will be interested in knowing if wyzguy's USB BIOS change works.

Definitely some weird printing issue. My USB Cannon-MP490 is detected fine, driver installs fine then I get a mime error

This is the same CUPS filter that Slacko uses with its Ghostscript 9.05.

The USB detection issue is a mystery. It must have something to do with how the kernel is identifying USB printers on some hardware and how CUPS gets that information.

I expect that this is a non-issue in the big-boy Linuxes which use their own printer installation systems instead of the CUPS web interface.

I tried this myself and it worked. You may have pasted in the URI incorrectly.

It would be nice to hear back from one of the people with this problem.

regarding the usb printer detection, previously on tahr 5.8.0.3 i noticed in the /var/log/messages and i think one of those error / kernel logs in /tmp that there was an error with udev rules contained in rule 26 something and cups rules in no 55 or something. am not at a puppy machine currently but i think thats where to start, the message on cups was that the udev rules file was either defective or using parameters that were no longer valid. perhaps you could check / scan those logs.

This issue has already been addressed above with the 55-cups.rules patch.

no it's not the next main stream puppy rather an experiment in using woof and getting a working tahr based puppy.
i'm hoping, with help!, to fix the problems it has (such as cups) and then add some stuff like quickpet and various useful pets of the forum. It won't be as small as an official pup, but more like pemasu's upups around 200mb.

still no go on the main computer, i also tried setting legacy usb option in the bios and trying different usb ports..... nothing. the same computer & printer work fine with precise.

do you think the problem is with the kernel or tahrs libs?

Maybe you should just install the official CUPS from Tahr so everything matches.

The directory /var/tmp has more strange permission 2755.

Most of Puppy and Ubuntu has permission 1777 for /tmp.
Ubuntu has same permission 1777 also for /var/tmp, whereas Puppy has 777 for /var/tmp.

Precise Puppy Japanese edition 571JP has permission 1777 both for /tmp and for /var/tmp, same as Ubuntu.

The one for tahr (built in tahr) is huge-3.12.22-tahr-PAE-i686.tar.bz2.

i had some huge permissions problems on my precise install, caused by doing something silly and i think it has affected the entire partition.... and possibly affected the woof build.

the new build is done on a newly formatted partition and from a freshly downloaded slacko so i'll be interested to see if those permission oddities are still there
