It's really a nice browser.

I have been using Palemoon for one year. It's really a nice browser. Why ? I could'nt say. That the reason why it's a nice browser.
A clever choice, sure.

Palemoon doesn't work

#123 Post by flyp22 »

Palemoon comes as the default browser in the Tahrpup 6.0.2 distro. However after a full install of the distro on my machine it doesn't run from the menu link, nor does the update link.

I've gone for full Firefox and Slimboat (for something QICK) but now I've read that Palemoon basically is a slim and quick firefox.... I WANT IT

What can I do?

Thanks in advance

Hi gcmartin,

thanks for the pointer, but been there, done that. Just to be sure, I ran it again.

- downloaded install pack 25.5.0 for linux from palemoon page
-> couldn't install it because it is a *.tar.bz2 which I, as a humble
beginner, don't know how to handle
- installed palemoon 25.5.0 using the PPM
-> no luck running it (after a reboot)
-> only the updater works but also gives me a message before
running (see below)
- uninstalled and reinstalled palemoon via the palemoon updater
-> still no luck

Is my system not made for this browser (or vice versa)? :?

PM's probably correct:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep flags

Yeah, not gonna happen. On the bright side, Tahr will run most, if not all current browsers.

Palemoon is smaller and quicker than Firefox because it is compiled for more modern processors and has removed support for older processors.....sadly for you this includes processors without the sse2 feature. You probably can't run the recent Chromiums on your processor either.

Little info for ya Flyp >> http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?p=1005#p1005
The difference between using SSE2 and SSE in practice is small in overall speed for a browser; the specific additional instructions in the SSE2 set are more useful for multimedia applications and games.

Not 100% true. A lot of the code removed was just plain old bloat the ordinary user has no use for.

Using a TahrPUP derivative with its Palemoon utility, I cannot upgrade.

Compiling now.. but why on earth would you change the path inside of the 7z source? I'm skeptical of 1 man forks of such a big project. I hope I'm wrong!

EDIT:

Slacko packages:
These will appear as 'New Moon'. In accordance with the licence official branding is disabled:

32 bit for slacko-5.9.3
https://01micko.com/packages/palemoon-2 ... k600_1.pet 24MB
cd8f4d51aba112d7521cafdb55fee862 palemoon-25.6.0-i686_slk600_1.pet

64 bit for slacko64-5.9.1
https://01micko.com/packages/palemoon-2 ... k600_1.pet 25MB
2d7464cf265612d6862b1af7f471efe1 palemoon-25.6.0-x86_64_slk600_1.pet

New addition

32 bit for slacko-5.7, 5.7.0, 5.6, 5.5 and maybe 5.4
https://01micko.com/packages/palemoon-2 ... slk570.pet 31MB (gz compressed pet)
2f83fab7ad58433ef98d6212bc046194 palemoon-25.6.0-i686_slk570.pet

These pets have the home page modified with the puppy 'jumping off page' and the default page for a new tab is the Palemoon (New Moon) start page (has the search box) which I find is much better than the default 'about:icon' page.

NOTE:
The 570 32 bit pet has webm and ogg disabled. Unfortunately, it would not build otherwise. If you need to watch videos flashplayer does work. Tested in a pristine (pfix=ram) slacko-5.7 install.

Just tried it on Slacko 5.6 but the pet says "failed to install". Not surprising I guess but as I'm a bit lazy i thought Id try...

Slacko-5.6 doesn't support xz compressed pets. It doesn't run anyway because it requires glibc>=2.17. IIRC slacko <= 5.7 have glibc-2.15.

I have tried to build it but it fails. I need to persist though because it should build. That is, the necessary build deps are there.

I also want to build it for fatdog-arm. That will be interesting!

See what happens.
