Seems PL and DSL are the only distros left for older boxes

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

Hi Mike.

What I like about these releases is they are very barebones and the fact they try to avoid gtk3 and other heavy cruft and put in some good commandline stuff. The Bork release is very crunchbang like which is sort of where I am at the moment, and of course runs really well on pentiums apparently and there are plenty of cho ices release wise to suit different machines.

Some of the release names are interesting to say the least so if you are bit offended by names like chlamydia or pony muncher then perhaps these aren't your bag.

sticks and stones... it seems to lead to one iso...so do you use that to build a bear distro or am I on the wrong track.

Hi Mike and James,

Sorry to clarify the link James has given is their sourceforge site and the download site. You are right most of the isos are very bare mine for example Bork had Dillo Browser, Ceni for network/wireless, Word Grinder, Simpleburn, Tiny Radio, a few other commandline apps. They use apt for package management as Synaptic brings a whole load of crud and you build up what you want using apt-get to install stuff.

Most of the releases are sid based but kernels vary like the one I use is Siduction based. There are differnet window manager releases eg XFCE, LXDE, JWM, Openbox etc the download site describes the different releases.

Ah ok I was going via their site rather than that link with all the variations.

So there really is one distro per linux user after all :D

Hi, folks.

I'd like to try antiX 13.2 on my single core@1.8 Athlon, 1+GB RAM,
Gforce4 Nvidia.

1st Q: Can I use grub4dos for frugal install on the same partition where my kennel is, sda1?
2nd Q: How?

BTW, I've already tried to install it by following instructions from here http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Frugal_install but it doesn't work for me.
I'm stuck with an error 'File not found'. Posting my menu.lst for reference.

Image

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

there is nothing specifying where the kernel and initrd is in there..

need something like
root hd(0,2)
or wherever they are ... this example is first drive third partition.

 Geee... Thanks, Mike.

Edit: Nope, doesn't work after adding line root (hd0,2) to menu.lst.
Now it looks like this:

Code: Select all

title antiX-13 Core 386 (sda3/antix-13-core386)
  root (hd0,2)
  kernel /antix-13-core386/vmlinuz quiet noxorg bdev=sda3 bdir=antix-13-core386 antix=LMX nomodeset
  initrd /antix-13-core386/initrd.gz
This time it's been half way to success, I'd say. Bootstrap=finished. Loading stuff=finished. Login (as root) = success and then cli-installer. OK. got there, was suprised by some questions (no, I don't want to partition HDD, no I don't want grub, etc.) and from there it went crazy. :?

I'll better try with LiveUSB, it won't s#$w anything up. Or much... :P

Ok Griot, at least you are past grub and the problem is with the distro itself.

You also have a better idea of what to do when testing others.

On the question if you want grub. Say yes and install it to / of where you have the AntiX root partition. it will reside /boot/grub as a menu.list instead of mbr.
Also. Best to use UUID instead of /dev/sdx in the kernel line. grub4dos will see it just fine. I usually when using grub4dos would chainload into antix and let antix grub /boot/grub/menu.lst take over loading the operating system from there.

Bug testing so you guys do not have to. Posting this now from

http://antix.freeforums.org/viewtopic.p ... 5&start=30

Which is pentium 3 1000hz with the newest xorg that hates savage chips and drivers because they are getting old as dirt.

8)

PS. I bet the new kernels and new xorg will evenly hate sis chips and drivers also. Among other older gear.

There's a lot to hate about SIS chips... should never have been born comes to mind :D ... was like walking through cold custard in hairy boots when I had one...

savage. was before rage 128 stuff IIRC... so yep getting old. The rage was quite good but then I discovered NVidia..... Ebay does have its useful side :)

Only bum is one machines AGP interface seems to have gone haywire :( ....messes up gaming on the olde beastie. Oh well back to the real world and salt water....

I still run my slightly modified Puppy LupuPlus 5.2.8.005-1 off a live cd on my 12-15 year old PCs with 528Mb RAM without any problems, dpup 484beta4 run on just about all, even some old PII boxes.

Ah yes the topic :D

Ok run slax6/nimblex with xfce4 on the pentium 3 compaqs with 512mb ram daily for several years now... works nicely thank you. Windows 2000 for the dark side, puppy and XP for playing...

Working on a lucid/slax based replacement as an all round replacement for all.... slowly.

By the way some switch cleaner in the AGP socket seems to have sorted it...fingers and other limbs crossed.
