Where Opera 11.64 might be?
In my setting (see below) it crashes while trying to load a(ny) page without any informative error. There is a "Failed to execute m4" and then crash on address <HEX> with nothing informative on this address (non-ASCII). Starting minimal, no difference.

Other than that it runs pretty nice considering the setup.
I (full) installed Legacy 2.1 in a 64bit dual core PPC (Mac) under VirtualPC emulating a 500MHz Pentium III
In this emulator only ttuuxxx's 2.14 was able to run but with considerably more problems, so it would be nice to have some browser because Konqueror can hardly manage.
What about seamonkey 1.x or firefox 3.x? Any of those tested in Legacy 2.1?

Hi Mavrothal,

Opera 11.64 is available from the main Opera website. I can't link to it at the moment because I'm in Wary 5.3 and have turned off Javascript to save system resources, but I will in an hour or two.

I've tried various versions of Firefox and Seamonkey extensively in
Legacy and none of them work; they all segfault when loading. I don't know why. The last one of John's distros I was able to get Firefox working in was Teenpup 2009, and that was the early version supplied with it (Firepup, which is based on Firefox 1.5).

Here's the page that you (probably) want. It has a lot of older versions of Opera for Linux on it;

http://www.opera.com/download/guide/?os ... 6&list=all

(Edit; just for fun, I loaded up Teenpup 2009 and installed Opera 5 in it, which I'm posting from now. You probably wouldn't want to use it (Opera 5) - for one thing, I couldn't find any way to "zoom in" and make the text in an editing box bigger - but it still works, despite having been released as long ago as February 2001. (It was the first "free" version of Opera, and was supported by adverts displayed prominently near the top of the window to the right of, but just below, the menu bar).

Thanks. I'll give it a try.
Though I'll probably go with Opera10 from here. Is more in line with a pentium III I guess.

You're welcome, but as for using Opera 10; nothing wrong with it, but my machine's a Pentium III (as you can see from my sig) and Opera 11 still works pretty well on it.

Opera files aren't very big downloads, so it's easy to try different ones and see which you like best.

True, though they have the files allover the place so unistalling may be probematic.
Cutently I'm posting from pera-9.64-2480.gcc4-static-qt3.i386 :D

You don't actually have to install it to use it - just download the tar.gz or tar.bz2 file and then extract it into a directory such as /root/my-applications.

You can then run it straight from there (or create a symlink to it from another directory such as /usr/bin).

Well done, again, john! Just catching up a little; glad to see Opera12 working well with FP with defaults. Had to activate DHCP wired connection - no problem. Did you forget something? No!

Hello Everyone,
Very exciting news forum member MisfitRoxx who is also a Xandros user provided me with a version of Flashplayer 11.2 which had been hacked to allow it to work in Xandros. This in turn has allowed it to also work on Legacy OS 2.1
I have packaged it for Legacy OS 2 and 2.1. I've also packaged the current version of Flashplayer included in Legacy OS 2.1 if thinks go wrong. As per usual it's a tar.gz to be unzipped to /

Grab it here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/legacy ... Packages/?

Still have issues with O11.64 in my strange system.
Here is Opera-9.64-static (as a pet) that works for me, in case anybody else has issues too.

Qs about software included on Legacy 2.1 LTS

#28 Post by captsunset »

Hi John!

I wanted to let you know that Legacy 2.1 LTS successfully lit up a recalcitrant Acer Aspire 3000, something that several flavors of 'buntus couldn't do. :D (That machine has only a gig of RAM, xp, and a 'mobile' Sempron CPU)

It belongs to an older lady who (unlike most) means to keep it offline to do her personal accounts and she is very interested in the two accounting programs included with 2.1. (She's upset because Quicken and the like have all gotten cloud crazy.) Could be 'cause they are free, too.

I googled for a user manual for the quacc 3.5, and found a lot about quadcopters, but nothing on your quacc except a '84 paper from the U of Wollongong and its name mentioned here in puppyland.

Q: can you tell me where I can find more info on both accounting programs?
They actually look pretty good!

Also, I had two minor setup questions; one is that I can't find anything that looks like a laptop's battery manager software. Am I as dumb as I feel?

The other is that she has a B&W Samsung 2510 laser printer (it qualifies as legacy too, it has both a parallel port and a then new-fangled USB cable). This printer works fine under Ubuntu, so I'm sure I can get it working with Legacy, but its model is skipped over in the setup list, so I just wanted to check if there is some reason before whacking away on it myself.

You've done a brilliant job on this distro!

Hello captsunset,

I added the help manual for kmymoney2 here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/legacy ... Packages/? download it and unzip it to / to use it select help within the kmymoney2 Application.

Info about qhacc here: http://qhacc.sourceforge.net/story.html

From the Applications menu navigate to Printer Management > Printers > Install the Cups Printer System and click on it. Read the Readme and install Cups. While the exact driver version from the Samsung Printer isn't listed try experiments with the versions included as one might suit allowing printing.

Hello captsunset,
The Application "Hardinfo" has a battery monitor which may detect your battery. On some laptops it works on others not. Hopefully your one of the lucky ones. John

JohnBiles,...
the new LegacyOS 2.1 is pretty terrific! Thanks for all your hard work on this one. I have it on my second computer (Dell optiplex GX150,..pIII--1Ghz--512mb ram)..and Legacy has given it new life. It's much appreciated.

Now if I could just get LegacyOS to work with my computer that runs a 1366x768 monitor. I tried...but it won't give me that resolution

Oh well,...works on my other computer monitors.

Yes, indeed. There are some limitations in getting these legacy offerings running on legacy machines. Some old boards do not have an AGP slot, for example. Finding a posh PCI video card (and at a sensible price) is very difficult, even on eBay. Even if the board has on-board video, this is often limited to ~8Mb, maybe less. And that leads on to the memory issue if a memory resident or memory hungry OS like the Puppies is to be used. Again, without unreasonable cost, it is difficult to find even 256Mb SDRAM strips in the 'spares' box. Mine is full of 32/64/128 strips. Many boards are restricted to only two RAM slots making it a struggle to achieve 512MB in total. Another issue is the size of the .iso distribution disc. Many old machines, notably laptops, are limited to accepting CDs. So far john biles has succeeded in meeting the 700Mb boundary - most have not, many don't care! There must come a natural limit consistent with operating speed. Rationality also precludes throwing the $/£ weapon on a system that may soon follow its compatriots to the grave.
But, take heart mon braves, we are not there yet, thanks to the sterling efforts of john, BK, micko and co.

John I've been able to download "Gamer", but have attempted 6 times with Legacy OS 2.1 LTS from a range of sourceforge mirrors. I repeatedly get a maximum iso size of 697mb where 730mb is otherwise reported - could you or someone who has successfully downloaded a working iso please provide the MD5? The target machine is a Pentium III laptop with 500MHz CPU and 512Mb RAM, and eXpand "Barbie" 2.14 works fine on it, would love to kit it out properly with your latest,
With Thanks.
