Frugal install is a good way to keep all your files while changing your operating system.
But you can go a long way if you know how to deal with partitions, and while changing your operating system, you can keep all your files, instead of wiping all your disk, and start again.
For this, you need to create 4 partitions, each with a different mount point.
First partition is for boot, 500MB should be enough : mount point is /boot
Second partition is for your operating system, keep in mind this will expand with time, so a good amount of partition is needed, around 20 to 30GB : mount point is /
Third partition is swap, 2 GB to 4GB is generally a good practice.
Fourth partition is your Home partition, where you keep all your personal files, which you want to keep, even if you change OS : mount point is /home
At installation time, choose to take partitioning in your own hands, instead of letting installer doing it its own way, and you get off to a good start, you will never have to wipe your Home partition again ,and you can jump OS more easily this way.
It should be useful for Dog users who can choose between a full install or a frugal install.
