My desktop PC is UEFI, and has never had any problem booting Puppies or XP.
The shop sold it with no OS on it, and I told the shop-owner I intended to use it with Puppy.
Perhaps he configured the necessary settings so it would give no trouble.

If you want me to take a look at my BIOS settings and report back on particular values, just say.

Hi OyyO,
Hi, is it possible to make install to ssd parition already formatted f2fs, from live CD usb flash drive? I don't have grub in it.
Welcome to the kennels. You will need the following two items
to install to your f2fs partition. 20gb of space is more than ample.

Quirky Unicorn (QU) is distributed as this file (193.2MB):

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... .2.usfs.xz

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... rtition.sh

Full instructions:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... rn-6.2.htm

You will then need to decide on a boot method. Please bear in mind that this
thread is experimental. If you are not comfortable with any of these steps do
not put at risk any other O/S that you may or may not have on your SSD.

ETP Thanks alot, i read almost all this thread, i already download this files. One question, Barry wrote that it will not install under Puppy distro, is it correct?
I also dowload quirky6.2.8gb.img.xz and try to unpack it with 7zip, but useless, 40gb free space are not enough for decompressing. i want to flash image to microSD via usbcardreader under WindowsXP.

Hi OyyO,

If you have XP and have downloaded the 6.2.8gb.img.xz file you need to first using 7zip extract the image within XP. It will extract to about 7.64gb. Make sure you have that much free space.
In XP to then place the extracted image on a microSD (A 16gb one would be needed) use win32diskimager. Note that the target (The microSD) will be wiped.
A detailed win32diskimager guide is to be found here:

I did not know what to do next, thought QU64 had come to a dead stop, however after a one-day rest, took a fresh look at it, now QU64 is back on track:

Hi again,

You only need 8gb of free space to extract the image into using 7zip but it must be on the XP NTFS partition.

You may well have 40gb of free space on another partition in a format that XP will not recognise. I suspect that you are trying to extract into that which will not work.

The following PM was received from OyyO.
Hi, i told you, that now i have only one partition and it's whis winxp, 40gb free space (not used, fat32). Something wrong with quirky's archive.
If you are correct about your XP drive being formatted as fat32 rather than the usual NTFS that is the cause of your 7-zip error.
Drives formatted as fat32 can only hold files with a maximum individual file size of no more than 4GB.

PuppyBSD?

#852 Post by ozsouth »

Would be good to see Quirky leading the systemd-less charge.

Since Barry's Blog pointed to comments here, I was wondering if any BSD can be Puppified? Apparently they aren't going to use systemd. Hardware compatibility seems to be the main issue. I used FreeNAS some years ago, based on FreeBSD - seemed good. Failing that, assuming Slackware 14.2 (in 2015) avoids systemd as expected, the 5 year support cycle would see us through till 2020.

Request for continuing what has become a 64bit PUP standard

#853 Post by gcmartin »

@BarryK has asked that comments be place here regarding blog items for QU.

I just wanted to share that EVERY mainline 64bit PUP; namely FATDOG, LightHouse, Slacko64, EmSee 64bit boot option has full SAMBA included. All 64bit PCs built from 2006 have a minimum of 1GB RAM not to mention huge HDDs in comparison to PCs of prior builds.

A Request
... for Full SAMBA to be included in 64bit QU. 01Micko's SAMBA has a ease of use GUI associated to make it easy for any user to share content created or contained on the system. He has made the tedious task of attempting to installed the confusing REPO components simple for use in PUPs.

This would insure that all of the current 64bit mainline PUPs have a standard set of tools which come to the user, built-in. SAMBA being one of them along with the many others from traditional PUPs.

Hope this can be a part of the upcoming 64bit QU.

My report on Quirky 6.0

#854 Post by Billtoo »

I installed PClinuxOS 64 bit to a usb3.0 hard drive on my mac mini.

Computer
Processor 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz
Memory 16345MB (286MB used)
Operating System PCLinuxOS
User Name bill (Bill)
Date/Time Fri 14 Nov 2014 03:38:35 PM EST
Display
Resolution 1920x1080 pixels
OpenGL Renderer Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile
X11 Vendor The X.Org Foundation
Multimedia
Audio Adapter HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH

It uses synaptic as the package manager, seems to have lots of
applications available.

I added xbmc,kshisen,hardinfo,mtpaint,and geany.

I vote PClinuxOS.

EDIT: I've been trying out PClinuxOS all day on a couple of computers
and tried out the option to create a live usb install (with
persistence).
It allows installing grub to the mbr of the flash drive.
I did the PCLinuxOS Live USB Creator, updated synaptic and then installed the updates.
I added several applications with synaptic, google-chrome,Libre Office
4.3.4.1,kdegames,XBMC 13.2,hardinfo,mtpaint,geany,and a few other small
applications.
There is 11.2 GB still free on a 16gb usb 3.0 flash drive.

Quirky Unicorn continues to work well, for me. I recently put it on a PNY 32 gb USB after not having the space to add the pets I would like (i.e. LibreOffice) from my 8GB usb.

Just a few notes (may or may not be helpful):

1. I registered and started using the Free Office but I've been getting some corrupt files (i.e. doc, docx) and I think Free Office may be the culprit. I haven't had issues like this in years, not even with ABI Word, so there may be an issue out there. I'll continue to use to confirm my preliminary findings.

2. Partially because of the possible Free Office issue and partly because I use scripts to batch convert, I installed Libre Office 4.3, which is working perfectly. ABI Word 3.0 (portable and another pet I had) needed additional files (Libpng16 and wv) to get running. I didn't try installing directly from the PPM, which may have been a smarter move. I found the missing items and packaged them in a pet. Send me a pm if anyone wants it.

Overall, I love the way QU runs and the shutdown alone trumps most other puppies out there.

Thank you BK!

Quirky Unicorn is not satisfactory on my laptop.

It is the screen rendering. When I scroll, white gaps appear on the age sometimes, and other "artifacts".
Not just in SeaMonkey.

Then there are characters that just disappear. Like, one particular letter will stop rendering, leaving a gap where it should be.

I don't know what can be the cause of this. The intel xorg driver?

Hi Barry,

It may be that the rendering is not the problem but the symptom of something else that is hogging resources.
Monitoring in HTOP might show something and it may also be worth checking connectivity with continuous pings to both the router gateway & google.com.
This is pure conjecture.

Netflix on Google Chrome under Quirky Unicorn 6.2.1

#859 Post by Keisha »

BarryK wrote:Quirky Unicorn is not satisfactory on my laptop...I don't know what can be the cause of this. The intel xorg driver?
Hello, first time on this forum. Quite a distro you've got here.

I have a desktop with i5-3770K cpu on an Asus P8H77-I mainboard, so its built-in graphics are intel 915. Quirky Unicorn 6.2.1 with the devx and kernel source is installed on hard drive partition sdb3. It was necessary to put vmlinuz on sda1/boot to get grub4dos to boot it, apparently grub4dos cannot see the second drive when both drives are size 500 GB, but the kernel can.

I found that, by upgrading libnss and the intel xorg driver, and then by loading Google Chrome 40.0.2214.6 from the dev channel, I am able to use Netflix. Unfortunately it was late at night when I was fiddling and I did not take notes as to exactly *which* libnss and intel xorg driver Ubuntu packages I used. I google'd "netflix on ubuntu libnss" and one of the search results produced the answer on libnss. Probably version 3.17. As for the Intel xorg driver, I suspect it was either

intel-linux-graphics-installer_1.0.7-0intel1_i386.deb
or
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

as both are in my download subdirectory.

The resultant /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so is 1755 K in size.
