This quote is from TechnoSaurus in the pupngo thread. May be a good idea if you plan to have minimal video drivers (vest only)486 is the mimimum, there are a couple of non-FPU boards we don't support (vortex86SX ... any 486SX processors for that matter)
586 is not a significant jump as far as instructions only cmpxchg (it was mostly architectural improvement)
586mmx _is_ a significant jump and is almost required to get decent video playback
686 adds cmov which is 1)technically wrong 2)not widely supported 3)not very useful. See Linus's comments on the subject
Current CPUs should work with 586mmx (including the vortex86MX in Barry's gecko) all the way back to 2nd gen pentiums and amd k6 circa 1997 ... so if we want to support 20+ yr old computers and the vortex86DX, then we would need to do 486 for a few more years otherwise I am all for 586mmx

Indeed video drivers fail to compile because some xorg devel files appear to be missing (xvmc in one case and xaa.h in another).BarryK wrote: In most cases we will have to compile apps especially for Quirky, and some apps might not be compilable without addition of extra packages.

Got her phone/email, Billtoo?
As one of the great unwashed who isn't capable of filling in blanks in CLI instructions, here is a list of mistakes I made:
I decompressed the .xz file - don't do this.
I didn't cd, change directory, to location of files
I had no idea what 'number" was required in the first question - it is the list number in the list of files - should be obvious, but it isn't unless you know the qualification that should accompany the question. Bad English grammar/parsing for outsiders.
The same grammatical shortcoming when selecting a partition except they now have their numbers shown alongside.
shalsum or sha1sum? - depends on your font selection.
After days of fruitless grappling with Q6, it seems I have a working partition accompanying a FULL Slacko5.6.5. Amazing! Just need micko to fix FULL shutdown/poweroff (for his masterpiece - Q6 does shutdown OK).
As BK says, he is retired and doesn't wish to take supplementaries from us plebs. So, if one of the kind gurus could occasionally grasp his pearls and expand them into stepwise textual instructions that would make a lot more folks happy, esp. as Q6 has been announced as a public offering. Well, that's enough grief for one day, back to educating the masses about the iniquities of methyl(chloro)isothiazolinone. No, don't ask - I'm also retired...

Painless install to an ext3 partition - HP Compaq nc6120
ipw2200 wifi working fine with SNS, but have switched to ethernet now.
Only problem noted so far is that it will not reboot. Hangs when it gets to saying it is restarting. Have to resort to the power button.
Shutdown does work correctly though.

I compiled it as described here:
http://bkhome.org/news/?viewDetailed=00017
....however, I included the 'xv' package but left out the 'xvmc' package, coz I didn't know what the latter is useful for.
You could repeat those steps, but include the 'xvmc' package, and a lot more video drivers can then be compiled.
-- oh, no, xvmc is not a package, it is a configure option for 'xorg-server', I used "--disable-xvmc"
Sources are all here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky6/sources/
Hmmm, I might repeat those steps, rebuild the PET, but this time with xvmc enabled.

The install script for 6.0 is for a 8GB card, but the guys figured out how to get around that.starhawk wrote:]@BarryK -- I have neither 4gb+ SD card nor funds to get one.
Is it possible to make a Quirky Puppy that fits on a 2gb card? I have one of those, if I can find it...
For version 6.0.1 I have rewritten the script, and a different download file, so can install to any size Flash drive >=2GB.
I have only tested on one 8GB USB Flash stick so far, one one laptop, so the install script needs more testing.
Please read the release announcement for 6.0.1:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... -6.0.1.htm
Quoting:
Firstly, the steps to install to any size Flash drive. This will optimise the installation to whatever size drive you want to install to (anything 2GB or bigger)
https://bkhome.org/news/
6.0.1 installed OK on a 2.5GB partition. Install files were on sda1 (FAT32) and the target partition was sda2 (ext2).BarryK wrote:I have only tested on one 8GB USB Flash stick so far, one one laptop, so the install script needs more testing.
The script complained about my FAT32 partition, but I ignored it and told it to go ahead since I know the target was ext2. xz seemed perfectly fine extracting a file from my FAT32 partition.
Distro used to install was a clean (no savefile) boot from Upup Precise 3.8.3.1 because GParted v0.16 in Quirky wouldn't let me shrink my FAT partition, but v0.18 in Upup Precise did.
I am trying to install quirky6.0.1 on to a laptop 32GB SSD drive, selecting a f2fs format. I am installing from a 16 GB USB stick running quirky6.0.
The install process reported no errors and resulted in a 16 MiB /dev/sdb1 with apparent required files (including a syslinux.cfg with a valid UUID for partition 2, and a boot flag present), and a 28.5 GiB /dev/sdb2 with what appears to be a normal root file system.
When I try to boot I get "This is not a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and try again". I checked on my version of syslinux and it is 5.10.
BK warned that syslinux 5.10 has problems, and when I try to install syslinux-4.05-86.pet I get "Error, package 'syslinux-4.05-86.pet' failed to install."
I found a copy of "syslinux-3.73.pet" but when I clicked on it, it also failed to install.
Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Another little issue is that PPM opens to a blank window (no packages shown) and when you try to get a pet defaults to local folder with no remote repo options available to download from.
Latter: Trying to boot quirky this morning failed to start X because xkb module failed to initialize. xorgwizard could not solve this.
Apparently the zcombo_xorg_glsoft pet broke X.
Latter latter: Removing the pet manually brakes X tottaly
Obviously some of the original X files where clobbered and being a full install they are gone after removal.
Oh, well...

I have had no trouble with installing PETs in Quirky 6.0. You just download the syslinux-4.05-x86.pet, then click on it. Re: Google Chrome on Quirky 6
Yes, you can't just delete a PET in a full installation, when they are critical files. Later, when my audit-trail is fully implemented, you will be able to.mavrothal wrote:These (and its DEV pet) where installed. Oh, well...
The zombo PETs had a bug, I fixed them, look at ibiblio (names now have "-1":
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... s-quirky6/
The problem is /usr/X11R7/share/xkb should be a symlink to /etc/X11/xkb.
Well, you can manually fix it. Running another distro, open up the two fixed PETs and manually copy the files into the Quirky partition.

Re: Quirky
One of the guys reported an error when the 'xz' utility tried to expand the quirky*.xz file in a fat partition. Which is why I put in that check, that you are running the script in a Linux partition.rameshiyer wrote:I am unable to install quirky quirky - partition.sh. It should be ext2,ext3 or ext4 partition. However, Please note that I trying to install quirky 6.0.1 from Precise 5. 7.1. Barry Sir, Please help me
However, there is another later report, see above, that xz is ok in a fat32 partition.
So, where the script stops and says that you don't have a Linux partition, but gives you the option of going ahead anyway, choose to go ahead, and let me know if it works.

In both machine at office and home PC, your script for install in partition is not working while running at Precise 5.7.1. It is able to proceed after entering some character, however, it is reporting some other problems. Anyway I will try again and let you know the status.
Whereas in Fatdog Puppy, I would like to inform you Sir, that I was able to install Quirky 6.0.1 in my office Desktop.
The working of Quirky also seems to be good Happy X'mas and very Happy New Year. Expecting many more interesting stuff from you in 2014.,
