How to disable FireFox 63+ updates/nags in Puppy

#1 Post by Barkin »

FireFox options to block the update, or block the nag to update are now gone,
(including "about:preferences" & "about:config" tricks) :(

There is an elegant way to block the update/nag ...

Create a directory (a/k/a folder) in /opt/firefox called distribution, (copy attached).

[Rename or delete the "distribution" folder when you want to update FireFox ]
Attachments
distribution.zip
unzip this file into into /opt/firefox (it's a folder called "distribution").

FF updates disabled.png
After installing the distribution folder you get this message in "about FireFox"

@ Barkin:-

There's an even simpler, quick'n'dirty method for stopping the updates & suppressing the nag.

Go into your firefox directory, and remove the last 4 files:-

updater
updater.ini
update-settings.ini
, &
updates.xml

Kills all that nagging and stuff stone-dead. I've used this for some time, with older releases where I don't want them updating themselves.

Works a treat!

In FireFox 66 deleting those updater files does not get rid on the nag screen.
If permitted FF will still download the new version, it just fails to install it,
and back to the nag screen again in an infinite-loop.

The answer I believe is in about:config I put value update and came up with
app.auto.update and I toggled it to false. Having found that my browser having done what Mike does still tries to download the update.

Thanks for the info!

I stopped using Firefox for reasons like this
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Running current ESR avoids this (so far... )

Update manually only at your convenience!

As an alternative to FF which is based on FF is GNUIcecat which doesn't nag for updates.

Thanks Barkin. It is an elegant solution. Updates usually good idea, but forcing them without providing ability to opt out is not cool.

In 68.0.xesr and onwards, the option "Never update Firefox" has been removed from Preferences, just as predicted upthread by Barkin.

So in order to prevent the new update nag screen, first ensure the "check for updates but let you choose to install them" box is ticked,
then go to "about:config", and search for the string "app.update.doorhanger" and change its value to "false".

Close and restart Firefox.

Sorry I can't report if this trick also works in regular Firefox releases because I don't use it in any of my kennel, only ESR.(browsers all live in "home" and symlinked to each Puppy); hopefully someone else can try it?

My frugal install of LxPupBionic 19.03 doesnt have /opt/firefox directory

I put the "distribution" folder in the /usr/lib/firefox directory. It works fine.

I am on throttled data until next cell plan anniversary, and the nag became super annoying. As was its multiple failed attempts to update after I said no. Damn fox cant accept NO for an answer.
