Looking for Dell Wireless 1704 driver

#1 Post by Sky Aisling »

Hi All, :)
I'm setting up a new Dell Inspiron 15-3521.
I am using Precise Puppy 5.7.1 and Frisbee network manager.
I can access the net through the DSL cable but not through wifi connection.

The machine's software wifi switch needs activation through Win7 on the HDD*.
or
A Dell wireless 1704 driver is needed in Puppies network manager's list of drivers.

I've spoken with Dell tech support.
They tell me the 15-3521 takes the 1704 driver.
They have given me their driver's download site, but, it appears to be for M$ download only. ?

I've found this reference on the net.

Can this be made Puppy friendly? I haven't a clue how to do that.

Or, better yet, does anyone have a 1704 driver setup to use in Puppy?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

*The Win7 on the machine has not been registered by it's owner yet.

Did you try one of the more mature/stable Puppy versions (e.g. 5.28)? I think that I've seen comments that indicated that it may have a broader driver set than some of the newer Puppy versions.

It loaded fine up on an older Dell Inspiron in my possession (and an older Dell Latitude as well). Might be an interesting test...

Yes, thank you, RetroTechGuy. I tried this but no teddy bear.

Searching tells me a BCM4365 driver is needed.
I have found this reference in Ubuntu forums.
The terminal command is different than Puppy's terminal commands.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/348796/w ... r-bcm-4365

Can I make this work on Puppy 5.7.1?
If so, then how?

The machine is not in my home.
Further developments since first posting include:
The MSOS Win7 has been activated.
The wireless software switch is turned on through Win7.
Win7 works with wireless connection, however, Puppy 5.7.1 does not.

Looking for Dell Wireless 1704 driver

Update:
I may have found some joy via Puppy Package Manager.
There is a Broadcom STA driver listed.
I'll know if it works later this week.

EDIT: No joy.
None of the drivers listed in PPM worked for the Broadcom 4365 wireless module in the Dell Inspiron 15-3521.
This Puppy Package Manager search was done using Puppy 5.7.1.

FINAL EDIT: For anyone searching for a driver for a Broadcom 4365 wifi modem driver as found in a Dell Inspiron 15-3521.
Dell assures me that there is no Linux driver for Broadcom 4365.
Further, M$ has locked up the wifi modem by opening and closing the modem via M$OS. This leaves the modem in 'off' position for any other OS to access.
