Fatdog is quite brilliant
Please boot chosing the "without graphical desktop" then press "e" and add text "loglevel=7 showerr" after /vmlinux keyword. See whether you've got any output at all. Alternatively try the menu "for machines with severe video problems" and boot with that.zaivala wrote:Exactly the same as before. Everything appears to be loading well, and when it goes to the desktop screen, it is blank except for the Fatdog logo.

did you try expand to base option? That really screams.. on the boot line add expand2ram=yes that uncompresses all files in one pass before finishing boot and the machine will BLOW your socks off.. needs 2G memory to play good..rebbi2 wrote:fatdog, fatdog wrote:rebbi1, thanks for your kind words. I'm going to update the pet with the newest one.
You are most welcome. Fatdog absolutely screams on this Dell Vostro 1000 (AMD Athlon X2 @ 1.6 gHz.
Finally get to download today...
Didn't get that far. I selected boot "without graphical desktop" and waited...jamesbond wrote:Please boot chosing the "without graphical desktop" then press "e" and add text "loglevel=7 showerr" after /vmlinux keyword. A bunch of other stuff followed, reflecting hardware and software condition, and then it locked or at least stopped doing anything...error: failure reading sector 0x3c50 from 'cd0'
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unabe to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)
Am I to assume that means my disk burn was unsuccessful, or is something else going on?
Yes, it seems so. If you have a spare USB flash drive you can try it on USB flash drive, though.zaivala wrote:A bunch of other stuff followed, reflecting hardware and software condition, and then it locked or at least stopped doing anything...error: failure reading sector 0x3c50 from 'cd0'

Be sure to check md5sum on downloads. but does seem like a bad burn.. I will be testings dvd multisession today. Will report as soon as first try if same issue happens to me.. While we are on this subject I have an Idea to move all fatdog64 files into EFI image and sling boot isolinux loader to transfer over to grub, hope it works would make the EFI editable to minor changes like grub config and a light remaster when used on USB or my new favorite way SDcard.
OK, computer is back from Milpitas, CA (ASUS). Windoze 8.1 has been restored, Precise Puppy 5.7.1 is on with some upkeep still to go... so I downloaded and reburned Fatdog64 (RC2).
This time, it worked. I made it all the way to the desktop, this time grey and containing icons. The installing stuff for getting online was wayyyy different from PP571 and very hard to understand, but I got it on my second try.
I got the sfs packages for Iron (my fave) and the manual. Clicked to install them. All I wound up with was a file window (each time) with new directories in them. Nothing new on my menus. When I click on Manual Pages on the Utility menu, it still says no man pages found.
I'm willing to believe Fatdog64 is the OS of my future. For the present, it is a lot harder to use and understand than PP571. Tell me what I'm doing wrong and I'll fix it.
It would be especially nice if something resembling the Install Tool in PP571 were here, so you could feel like you were doing things right. Also, as I said, the tool for connecting to my wireless modem was very confusing, where PP571's SNS was simple (as the name implies).
[Edited to add:] I see the Home page says to go to "System SFS Loader". There is no SFS Loader selection on my System menu. I stumbled on it earlier but it's apparently named something else and I haven't found it yet.
