updating 3hd .6 to .7 versions

#301 Post by Snail »

Can I just copy the initrd, vmlinuz and sfs files to my existing 3hd 5.2.8.6 directory( and edit menu.lst or sylinux.cfg of course)? What about savefile compatibility?

Obviously make a copy of your savefile before trying it.

I found that it was compatible, with at least the 5.2.8.7.

When I moved to LupuSuper1, I decided to start a fresh savefile, to remove all the non-user files "crud" that eventually accumulates in them...

As for the install, I think that's pretty much what I did. (I may have had puppy do an install in a new folder, just to make sure, then moved those contents over to replace the old...verifying the grub bits and paths)

Hi Rerwin (and others).

After doing my upgrade to Sulu1, I realized that I hadn't installed my HP Laserjet 1020. It's a new savefile, so all my old baggage is gone.

I seem to have forgotten what magic I did to get it running under 5.28.

I tinkered a bit, and then uninstalled all the various drivers I tried, and added only foo2xxx_rcrsn-2014.pet

I get a handshake "cycle" when I start up, but when I try to print I get

Code: Select all

stopped
"Empty print file!"
Under 5.28.005 (or earlier -- I simply used my old save file), I also had some HP drive (hpijs3.11.1.d-something -- I tried adding that, but didn't work).

Am I missing something obvious?

All of the lupus contain the HP support packages hpliplite-3.14.3 and hpliplite_plugin_install-1.2 in an attempt to support many HP printers. My printer experience consists only of installing my HP printers in CUPS. What happens when you do that?

Hi Rerwin, I had been flailing at this, and asked in the printer thread.

Rcrsn51 came up with the answer. I gave a report of what I did to make sure it went in clean (I have noticed that this printer sometimes gets confused when tinkering with drivers, if you don't power cycle the printer and reboot the Puppy).

So, this is using Sulu1:

Thanks to both of you for all of your help! :D

I didn't get a change to test Rerwin's answer (so I can't tell if that would have worked also -- don't mess with it once working... ;-) )

BTW, I thought that I should give a Sulu1 report.

I have it on my desktops, and my general observation is that it doesn't seem to bog down the hardware as much as the Lupu 5.28.005 (and that was an improvement over older versions).

The only thing that makes the machine struggle is Firefox (which I think tends to exhibit memory leaks -- and I think the browser always has -- all the way back to the days of NyetScrape ;-) -- IIRC, that was the only program that ever crashed my Debian 1.3 install ;-) ).

Though neither of my current desktops are exactly "retro", other than generation/age... (not "retro" by my standards)

One is a 3100 Athlon with 2GB RAM, the other a 3.4 GHz Pentium, with 3 GB RAM... (the latter a "discard", as it was "too old" to continue using -- WTF??!!)

However, I have Mini on CD ready to try on my PII 333MHz laptop... (that ought to be "retro" enough...)

orinoco_cs pcmcia in 5.2.8.7

#310 Post by sindi »

Is there a 5.2.8.7 with support for orinoco_cs (the internal orinoco
card in Dell Inspiron 8100)? I had to set up a Toshiba with the same
internal card with Wary 5.5 and Lupu 5.2.5, which still support orinoco
(and also uncomment a line in /etc/init.d/rc.pcmcia) to support noncardbus
pcmcia cards - I think.

The 5.2.8.7 which I downloaded will not detect my card, and manual i
nstall says:Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
- lots of unknown symbols in dmesg (orinoco_up, hermes-struct_init, etc).92

Wary works on the DELL. I will try 5.2.5.

Yes, before dealing with the wifi driver, you must first ensure that Puppy's PCMCIA sub-system can see your card.
I suggest you go back to 5.2.8.7 and run these 2 commands -

Code: Select all

pccardctl status
pccardctl ident
If you cannot see the wifi card listed, reset the Cardbus interface like this -

Code: Select all

pccardctl eject
pccardctl insert
Now run "pccardctl ident" again.
If still no luck, it may be that pcmciautils is not running, so do this -

Code: Select all

pcmcia-socket-startup
and run "pccardctl ident" again.
Let us know if this works.

Lupusuper1-5.2.8.7-k3.0.25-20141203.iso works fine on an
Asus K53S icore 7.

Never seen a recovery exercise to factory reset this laptop back
to Win 7 pristine state be so friggin' complicated.

Hours and hours...20 reboots would be an understatement.

My hat's off to Asus for a stupidity exercise beyond my wildest dreams.

Whereas Puppy, with a save file to the hard drive,
booting initially from cd.....wowsome.

rerwin excels again....Chris.

Get your copy of CloneZilla and back it up... Then let it update, and back it up again... Never again have to wade through that sort of restore... ;-)

Report:

An old Compaq Armada (7400), 333 MHz PII. 256 MB RAM runs lupumini. When I flush the cache, it seems to show a memory load of under 60MB. That makes it very comparable to the old 4.11/4.12 Retro (from my recollection).

Even got the sound to work (though the internal speakers are pretty poor -- need to try it through some externals, to see if the driver is correct). It did require that I run ALZA to locate the correct driver (it didn't automagically load).

I didn't try pushing it, and didn't connect it to the internet (the wireless card is out, and have also mislaid my USB card -- the single built in is a USB 1.1)

Well, I really don't use this as more than a test-bed these days, so... ;-)

Darn good work guys! :D :D :D :D

" Never again have to wade through that sort of restore.."

""""""""

He had not burnt recovery discs.

After all the Asus bs I copied Win7 onto his second partition.
I believe I can just delete his newer Win7, if it stuffs up...
copy it back with Puppy and it will run.

Same hardware....same drive...I do this with XP.

I probably could have use the Falcon or Hiren boot cds
and extracted the hidden Windows Recovery wim files to a drive.

But it was like looking at a snake....Asus mesmerised me.

Chris.

Latest Skype to the repo....

#317 Post by Atle »

Hi Rerwin...

Just installed Mini to my Celeron with 1 gig ram.

I have two small comments...

1) Remove the option of save to partition during first reboot. That one messed up my boot and save to file worked. Could be Ext4?

But in my opinion save to file always works, but others dont.

2) Get the latest skype into the Quickpet and SFS. There are both SFS and .pet of the latest skype here:

http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/

For new users the forum is a hopeless mess and getting skype right is quite important for many users.

Is it time to make a new official release at distrowatch?

I find your work great and thanks for doing this. Also others that helps out I shall thank for helping old hardware to run as new...

Atle

It is nice to hear from you again. Rather than removing the option, I prefer to listen to others' experiences with that option and possibly fix it or limit it from ext4 partitions. We need to identify the specific problem. Until then, users can consider themselves warned against using save-to-partition, at least for ext4 partitions.
2) Get the latest skype into the Quickpet and SFS. There are both SFS and .pet of the latest skype here:

Thanks for pointing that out. Since lupu does not already contain skype, I am not ready to take on the responsibility for integrating it into lupu. Could users simply add the SFS in bootmanager or with sfs_load? Or is there more to it? Perhaps you would provide a link to the SFS file and the instructions for adding it (or summarize them here), so users can do it themselves. I do not have access to the repo, so cannot add skype.

Keep in mind that lupu is not an official puppy release, so cannot be referenced in distrowatch, as I understand. But I would like to see 5.2.8.7 added to the puppylinux.org page that lists the available puppy distros, since it already mentions the original lupu 528-005. I am not sure how to go about doing that.

It's been working fine for me; I'll try it now and edit this post.
LuPu super 2 is on sda2, an ext3 partition.
EDIT:Sorry, I was not given the option to save to partition during first reboot; don't know what I did wrong.

Have you tried to use the contact page for puppylinux.org?

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
