wboz wrote:What is the difference Lupusuper and regular Lupu? I must admit I had trouble following it in the first post, beyond "super is more likely to run on a range of newer hardware" which seemed a desirable characteristic when I need to boot another computer in a pinch.
Beyond that, all of the lupusupers support "xz" compression, which is used for SFS files built for recent puppies. Those are the only two benefits, but important if you need them. (BTW, I have not received the pdiag file you sent me after your success.)

Bigpup,
I considered the save folders but decided that I do not want to add that new capability to lupu, especially considering that it was upgraded repeatedly recently. I want to avoid last-minute fixes in case it still needs work to be sure there are no unintended consequences.

Remember, the main reason to maintain lupu is so that those of us who need nothing more can keep up with current versions of things without competing with newer pups.

No, but I gave my old drum kit away for free to a music store collecting instruments for refugees!

Lucid Pup 5.2.8.7-20141203 being released!

#273 Post by rerwin »

After improving the 8188eu driver (thanks to the reporting and testing by wboz) and seeing no other reports of any problems, I have begun the uploads of the many variants of Lucid Pup 5.2.8.7. Initially, only the lupu and lupusuper2 groups are in place. I will add 3HD and supers 1,3 & 4 soon, at which point I will update the main posting.
EDIT 12/6/2014: The complete set has now been uploaded and updated on the main page of this thread.

The download folder:
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/y3rkzh ... es-5.2.8.7

My plans for the "libre" and "plus" variants are for the "libres" to contain only the final release of each LibreOffice series, now 4.2.7, and for the pluses to have the latest release, currently 4.3.4 in early December. Users can subsequently replace the LibreOffice SFS file with later versions as they appear, from various sources or the "Get LibreOffice download and install LibreOffice" option in the Documents menu.

As usual, please report any problems with 5.2.8.7. Thanks for everyone's interest and assistance in keeping Lucid Pup going.
Richard

Addition, 12/5/2014:
My main indicator of interest in Lucid Pup is the download count for each of the variants. Here are the counts in my MediaFire account for the 20140321 set of ISO files, as of today:
  • lupu-5.2.8.6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 919
    lupu3hd-5.2.8.6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 175
    lupulibre-5.2.8.6-4.1.6 . . . . . . . 104
    lupulibre-5.2.8.6-4.2.4 . . . . . . . 106
    lupumini-5.2.8.6 . . . . . . . . . . . . 256
    lupuplus-5.2.8.6-4.1.6 . . . . . . . . 74
    lupuplus-5.2.8.6-4.2.4 . . . . . . . . 101
    lupusuper1-5.2.8.6-k3.0.25 . . . . 170
    lupusuper2-5.2.8.6-k3.2.48 . . . . 210
    lupusuper2libre-5.2.8.6-4.1.6 . . . 76
    lupusuper2libre-5.2.8.6-4.2.4 . . . 101
    lupusuper2plus-5.2.8.6-4.1.6 . . . . 84
    lupusuper2plus-5.2.8.6-4.2.4 . . . 106

    lupusuper4-5.2.8.6-k3.9.9 . . . . . . 257
(Lupumini is lupu with a separate "zdrv" file for the modules, so that the main puppy file will fit into the RAM of PCs with only 256 MB of RAM, for fast response.)

I'm sorry I failed to send the pdiag. I sometimes select a file to attach and think it's done, but really I need to additionally click 'confirm' or something ... often confuses me. I do still have the pdiag output and will send when I boot the machine (i'm not on it now or I would do it now). Looks like you don't really need it probably but still I will send :)

Really interesting to see the counts ... pretty well distributed actually, isn't it? What's the mini? Oh well the basic lupu is small enough though! :D

I have tried the new 3HD version and Lupusuper4 version.
Both boot to desktop with sound and internet working properly. I installed/updated several pets that I use on regular basis and have found no problems.
Thanks for your continued effort to keep these puppies updated and available for us to use,

Wowza!

I'm lost... If I wanted to try the best nominal update for 5.28 (I'm running 005 at the moment), which one of these would be it?

Is there a brief description of what is interesting about each somewhere?

RetroTechGuy,
Here is the net of my attempted explanation in the first message of this thread:
- The main lupu has everything in the main (lupu_528) SFS file.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/lafaj ... 141203.iso

- lupulibre has LibreOffice and java/jre included in the large main file, to load into RAM if 1 GB of RAM is installed.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/wf8fi ... 141203.iso

- lupumini has a "zdrv" SFS file so that the main file fits into 256 MB of RAM.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/6xgwv ... 141203.iso

- lupuplus is lupu with added SFS files LibreOffice and java runtime (jre) to be copied to a frugal installation directory.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/agd2r ... 141203.iso
(stable November version of LO 4.3)

- lupu3hd (3-Headed Dog) is lupu based on linux kernel 2.6.37.6, to support somewhat newer hardware than does the lupu kernel (2.6.33.2).
http://www.mediafire.com/download/468oo ... 141203.iso

- lupusuper (or "sulu") is/are based on kernels 3.x, to support newer hardware and xz compression:

- lupusuper1
http://www.mediafire.com/download/hjoaj ... 141203.iso

- lupusuper2 (kernel from precise 5.7.1-retro, which includes analog modem support)
http://www.mediafire.com/download/kbkig ... 141203.iso

- lupusuper3 (kernel from pemasu's dpup wheezy)
http://www.mediafire.com/download/tphah ... 141203.iso

- lupusuper4 (kernel from pemasu's upup raring)
http://www.mediafire.com/download/7715d ... 141203.iso

- lupusuper2libre is lupusuper2 with LibreOffice and java/jre included in the large main file, to load into RAM if 1 GB of RAM is installed.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/wzd88 ... 141203.iso

- lupusuper2plus is lupusuper2 with added SFS files such as LibreOffice and java runtime (jre) to be copied to a frugal installation directory.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/0tddq ... 141203.iso
(stable November version of LO 4.3)
So, the choice depends on your needs for your installation. If you have only 256MB of RAM, choose the "mini" for best performance. If you want use/access "modern" SFS or archive files that use xz compression, use any of the "supers" -- super2 if you care about analog dialup modems.

If you want LibreOffice and have at least 900 MB of RAM, use either of the "lupulibre" ISOs unless you want to keep up with the latest by updating every month or two or have less than 900 MB RAM, in which case the "lupuplus" ISOs are appropriate. The "libres" have the final version of the latest series (4.2.7, right now; 4.3.7 next May).

Also, the choice of "super" depends on which one supports all of your hardware on a particular PC. I recommend super2 or the lowest-numbered one that works for you. HTH.

Lupulibre ISOs Replaced by "really final" release of LO 4.2

#280 Post by rerwin »

Thanks, ally, for mirroring/archiving the 5.2.8.7 set.

I discovered that libreoffice.org issued an unexpected further bugfix release, 4.2.8. I rebuilt the lupulibre and lupusuper2libre ISOs with that new version of LibreOffice 4.2 and updated the main message containing links to the files.

Those who have already downloaded a 4.2.7 version should consider getting the replacement, to have all of the 4.2 fixes.

That's because Libreoffice Calc was breaking spreadsheet documents.

When they tried to add "new features" to a release. Hence the rushed out bug fix release. I found this out on one of the Linux Voice Podcasts

For those who don't know Linux Voice is made by ex members of Linux Format.

Just downloaded lupusuper4 Puppy and did a full install. The box has a Pentium 4 at 2.4GHz, 1 Gb of ram and 60 Gb hard drive. Everything works as advertised!

I am just an unabashed avid user making use of the efforts that you kind folks provide. Puppy has been my OS since the release of 5.1.1 both for desktop and laptop. My sincere "Thank You" to all who gave it birth, raised it to be the fine creature that it is and continue to nurture it along. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

I would just like to say that what you are doing is very important.

You make lots of old computers acting as if they where brand new.
It has a great environmental impact and is a great opposition to the "buy new stuff" madness.

Picking up the stick after Playdayz, is like a real honorable thing to do.

I got some real old laptops where I shall try out this, but now the sun shines outside, despite it being like minus 10 celsius, so I better get out and freeze my ass of.

Your efforts does make a difference and if up to me, this should be presented soon as a offical Puppy on Distrowatch.

Android utilities in 528.007

#287 Post by kevin bowers »

For the last year or two I have been playing with Android tablets. For those who don't already know, Android is based on Linux. But many modifications, rooting, custom ROMs, etc. require low-level communication with a PC. Of course most utilities for this are Windows-based. However Windows is not very good at this, driver problems are rampant. Linux has a set of standard drivers built-in that work with nearly all Droids; the only exception I know of is the line of Hannspree tablets. If anyone knows how to make ADB and Fastboot work with them please let me know. But for most Android devices Linux is the way to go.

For some time I had problems with newer Intel chipsets, they seemed to be allergic to Android. This was true regardless of OS. Well, thanks to Sulu2, this is no longer the case. Not only does it run both ADB (Android Debugging Bridge) and Fastboot on my core 15-Z87 machine, but it will still boot and run my old P4 box that I've been keeping alive mostly to mod Androids.

I have put together a sulu2 remaster that includes the two utilities (I simply copied them from an Android SDK installation into /usr/bin/), Seamonkey (updated to 2.31), and Cydia Impactor, which is the only one-click Android root tool I have found for Linux.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/62oh3 ... ndroid.iso

Questions, comments, criticism welcome!

Wow, sounds great! So this sulu remaster runs on an Android tablet? That will have great appeal. Have you considered a dedicated thread with a HowTo tutorial etc? If this is something to try on a cheap Android tablet it sounds like fun.

No, you misunderstand me. This is simply sulu2 live CD to be run on a PC, with the two command-line utilities added that allow one to modify an Android tablet or 'phone, to wit, ADB and Fastboot. It will not run on an Android tablet, it is merely a tool for tweaking them, and one that is IMHO far easier to use than the Windows tools, mainly because of the lack of driver problems. And of course Puppy is simply easier to use than Windows.

@ally, thanks for the mirror!
