Recent puppies as slacko and precise have built-in usb-modeswitch. Older puppies may need updated usb-modeswitch for 3G connection. See for example:

I have compiled the latest usb-modeswitch in precise (even if precise already has usb-modeswitch) and I have tested it in a live of lupu 5.20. It works for me. Install both the attached pets to get the latest usb-modeswitch in your older puppy and to get recognized your 3G modem if it mounts as disk.
