dpup 485

So many of you remember gposil's dpup project, it was going pretty well but was discontinued because of gposil's problems.
Last version was dpup484 beta 4 and it's pretty neat.
So yeah I just updated some libs and gtk to be more compatible with newer application versions but keeping the same kernel and Xorg version for now.

What's updated:

glibc 2.13
glib 2.28.6
pixman 0.20.2
cairo 1.10.2
pango 1.28.4
atk 1.32.0
gtk 2.24.4
gnutls 2.10.5 / libtasn 2.9 / libcrypt 1.4.6 / libgpg-error 1.10

systray icons:
network_tray 2.4.3 Mick's version,
firewallstate 1.8 ,
freememapplet_tray 2.2-2 Mick's version

precompiled seamonkey 2.0.14 and current flash player

libevent 2.0.11 / transmission 2.22

Development headers for all of these updates added to devx.
I also added git (devx from 484 didn't have it?)

I changed wallpapers and some themes but basically it's same old dpup484 with this stuff updated.

Iso is here: dpup-485.iso (thanks to ally)
OR:
Iso is here: dpup-485.iso 171 MB md5sum
Devx: dpup-devx_485.sfs 139 MB md5sum

Some additional pets:

pidgin-2.8.0-i686-dpup485.pet
gqview-2.0.4-i686-dpup485.pet
gimp-2.6.11-i686-dpup485.pet [needs gegl-0.1.2-i686-dpup485.pet and babl-0.1.2-i686-dpup485.pet ]
filezilla-3.4.0-i686-dpup485.pet [needs wxGTK-2.8.12-i686-dpup485.pet ]

Also some additional GTK engines and DEV/DOC/NLS pets for these apps listed can all be found here:
http://meownplanet.net/dejan/isos/dpup485-pets/

Once again thanks to russoodle for hosting space. :)

For DRI acceleration I use this deb from lenny:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/l ... i/download
Still have to see which SDL fits best.

If someone has the kernel sources used to compile dpup484's kernel 2.6.30.5 please upload them somewhere.

Hi Dejan,
I made some pets for Audacious 2.4.4 music player, I ran fixmenus in
the terminal and restarted x to get the menu entry to show up,maybe
just restarting x would have done it.
Audacious has an extra stereo plugin that sounds nice on my speakers.

Thanks for pets Billtoo, it's running on my system ATM (see screenie attached)

Are these compiled or taken from debian repo and which one? lenny/squeeze?

For refreshing menus this should be enough:

Code: Select all

fixmenus && jwm -restart
BTW that's fluxbox in the screenie I'll make pet for it.

You're welcome, I compiled them in dpup485.

Thanks dejan!
It's very heartening to see that the dpup gposibilities are still growing. This may just be what is needed for a few 'projects' I have in mind,
Cheers!

Frugal install on a Compaq DC5100, Intel 3.0gig, 2.5gig ram.

I took the easy way out with Aqualung, used debian-lenny-main in PPM and added libwavpack, libmodplug, libavcodec and libavutil from http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/libs/.

FF4 runs fine from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/.

Got Icewm from debian-lenny-main in PPM

and it's pretty neat
Sure is. In 485 now
One of the things I learned from my Lucid Tmxxine experiment
http://tmxxine.com/tmx525/ (not recommended incidentally)
that duplicates dpup is using wbar near the top of the screen . . .

It can be altered in a text editor like so
(right click on rox eye icon to make the invisible 'dot' directories appear)

configured wbar by editing /root/.wbar
i: = icon
c: = command
t: = text under icon

Dejan if you don't have access to the dpup site
the wikka site is still accessible - just added this thread

I made pets of x file explorer version 1.32.3,it also needs
the fox-1.6.43-i686.pet installed.

I had to leave out the kde icon theme in xfe to keep the size of the pet
under the 2mb limit for uploading to the forum.

Iguleder, what do I need to do to integrate it into 485? Just replace kernels or do I need to modify initrd.gz or something?

You need to edit the initramfs, replace all kernel modules with the new ones and add their dependencies. Then, you need to replace vmlinuz and add the rest of the modules to the /lib/modules of the main SFS. Once the modules are there, you need to run depmod to generate their dependencies.

Quite complicated. Tough case ... but maybe I'll find some time to play with it this weekend.

Thanks again dejan for all your efforts with dpup - and thank Billtoo for your handy contributions in the pets department. I think it's a 'keeper'.
Like cthisbear I also had wireless hassles, but with a little different behaviour. I've got a frugal-install of your dpup on a Lenovo T60, T7200 Intel dual-core at 2GHz, 2GB RAM. It's got an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG MiniPCI card, and has been fine with XP, Puppy4 and Puppy5 distros run on it (e.g., MacPup511, Lucid 510, 520 and 525) to a wpa-encrypted 3G router. I've worked out another solution to the problem I was having - only getting a successful connection with the older network wizard, save the profile etc. but on reboot those settings seemed to have been over-written or ignored by the default etho/wlan search startup as a "IP address failed at wlan0". Had to start all over with the older network wizard, each boot up.
This hasn't happened to me before, but after PWireless2's Automatic roam/Refresh scan showed the router ports available I wrote down the BSSID, went to 'Profiles' and had to manually re-key in the BSSID and the (WPA) Key and saved the profile - no more problems with bootup (although it tries to also connect with the unused eth0, but that's just background noise). I think in the past when I've used Pwireless, the BSSID is automatically carried over between the settings tabs.

On another matter I've had to bite the bullet and try to run software under Wine 'cos the Linux version seems incompatible somewheres with Puppy's organisation of java directories. I loaded up wine-1.1.43-lucid - will that be problematic in 485, do you think?
Thanks,
Puppyt

Billtoo thanks for pets, didn't have time to try them yesterday.
Puppyt, 485 might be using older version of Pwireless, maybe latest version does that automatically.
Whoever has wireless connectivity please try latest Pwireless or Frisbee and see if it solves problem.
Haven't tried wine, don't know about that.
