Preview - LxPupXenial-16.05.1

#811 Post by peebee »

Preview for testing:

LxPupXenial-16.05.1-pae.iso

With many thanks to 666philb for Xenialpup 7.0.1 with 32-bit pae kernel 4.5.2

If you find problems please check in the first instance if they are also present on Xenialpup 7.0.1 and report them at the thread for Xenialpup 7.0.1

Only report problems with LxPup / LXDE aspects here - thanks.

LxPupXenial-16.05.1 inherits some aspects from LxPupSc - particuarly the use of LxPanel instead of LxPanelX as per LxPupTahr.

This is a Preview and currently identifies as Xenialpup.

All of the basics working great here on a quick test. Booted straight to desktop in proper resolution, sound OK OOTB, Frisbee connected without issue, smoothly surfing on Palemoon. Nice work!!

Happy as clams here. Intel sound and video, iwlwifi WPA2 connection using Frisbee, Lid suspend all fine OOTB. Palemoon profile symlinked to extra-pupspace location as usual. Rendering and speed good. Glxgears FPS good at 1550.

The "Icon set" icon switcher doesn't appear to work, as it's not displaying the Elementary icon set after choosing, for some reason (liveCD session, and after restarting the WM).

Minor niggle/preference - I'd much prefer that the desktop setup "Change appearance" window remain open after making a selection (as it always immediately closes in the background) - is there any easy way to accomplish that?

Otherwise, more general (not extensive, deep) testing - this LxPup appears flawless so far. Happy to see the panel RAM monitor back, and the panel weather widget even works! I think I'll be focusing on this one from here on out - it's winning my affections.

Just a great Pup - thanks peebee and 666philb!!

Hi Bob

Good catch - will be fixed in next version.

To keep the change-appearance window open try deleting all lines EXCEPT the last of <action type="exit">Exit</action> in /usr/bin/lxappearance

Cheers

Thanks peebee - that did the trick... much better.

Another small oddity - installed Wbar from Menu>Desktop>Change Appearance>Options, and it's (rox) File Manager icon is opening PCManFM instead. "rox" in lxterminal is doing the same thing. Not sure if it's Wbar related or not, I'll have to re-boot to pristine and see.

Edit - sussed; requires an uppercase "R" in "Rox". Must somehow be calling defaultfilemanager if lowercase "r".

The more I dig, I find myself chuckling out loud at all of the neat little details and overall "completeness" of this Pup... such nice work!

Hi Bob

rox does open pcmanfm.....

Rox opens rox-filer....

This is how I've chosen to tackle Puppy's close reliance on rox-filer....these days it should probably be defaultfilemanager in most scripts - but there's a lot to change - and unfortunately the cli switches are not 100% the same for different file managers....

so if you really want rox-filer in wbar you should use Rox

Cheers

Ahh - so expected behavior, and not really an issue at all... good to know (and remember).

Thanks!

FWIW - All three tools for wireless connection (SNS, Frisbee and Network Wizard) have worked perfectly on my home WPA-encrypted network, using a USB WiFi dongle. 8)

New .iso - all fixed and working splendidly here, peebee - thank you!

Just playing around with theme/personalization and trying to get Pwidgets, conky-1.9.0-lxsc and Pwidget's Xonclock (bugger!) to play nicely with each other...

Hello Peebee,

Can you please explain the difference between these two versions?

LxPup-15.11.4-s-pae (2016-03-04)

LxPupTahr-15.12.1-pae (2015-12-22)

It seems strange that although 15.11.4-s has the lower version number, it seems to have the later file date.

Sourceforge says that LxPupTahr-15.12.1-pae is the most recent version. Is that true, even though its file date is earlier?

Also, what DEVX sfs should we use with LxPup?

Thanks!

LxPup is based on slackopup which is built from Slackware 14.1 components

LxPupTahr is based on tahrpup which is built from Ubuntu Trusty Tahr components

So the main difference is the different repositories where additional applications can be obtained.

There are also differences in the applications built-in - notably the web browser which is Firefox ESR for LxPup and Palemoon for LxPupTahr

LxPup has had 3 updates since its first appearance in November - hence is now at 15.11.4

LxPupTahr has not been updated since December - hence is still at 15.12.1 (however it does have tahrpup's excellent incremental update mechanism)

The devx's for both are in the post's linked to the 1st post of this thread.

You can only choose 1 "latest" download on Sourceforge per project....

Hope that makes things clearer
Cheers
peebee

p.s. if you're looking for "cutting edge" then LxPupSc (Slackware Current based) and LxPupXenial (Ubuntu Xenial Xerus based) are more experimental.

Thanks Peebee, I'll check them out!

I found the DEVX on your homepage, hidng in a subtle little text link. It seems identical to the one for "vanilla" Slacko 6.3.

LxPupXenial-16.05.1

#828 Post by Marv »

I just got around to setting up my networked HP4500 printer in LxPupXenial 16.05.1. Unlike when last I set it up in LxPupSC, no patches or additional libs required at all. Just install the hplip_print-3.14.10 pet and go. And this with CUPS 2.1.3

Thanks,

Not a surprise. Tahrpup/Xenialpup still contain these slightly older libs that have now disappeared from the Slackware spins.

I don't know if they are coming from the upstream Ubuntu packages or if Phil has added them.

Keyboard Layout handler - no flags in the panel

#830 Post by riedzig »

Hi Peebee
I'm still using your excellent LXpup as No. 1 among all distros, but I am also trying to get through some bugs (not found in forums). One of them is the Keyboard Layout switcher/handler), which won't show in any LXPup the appropriate flags in the panel (shows only a blank frame). Do you please know a solution?
