Wow

#31 Post by Volhout »

PeeBee, 01Micko, Jeyj69,

Thank you all very much for this combined effort. I am currently using Slacko 5.6.0 and LxPup by SFS on my HP DV2000 laptop. I have had so many distro's that give problems on this laptop (old Nvidea), and now everything works out of the box.

Trying freeoffice now, and that also seems to work.It feels like good alternative to the bulky LibreOffice. Only notice that when I install the SFS it does not show up in the menu's like it does on JWM.

Slacko 5.6.0 + LxPup from SFS may make it onto the harddisk (testing from USB now)

Regards,

Volhout

fd0 drive

#32 Post by sszindian »

Nice program here peebee!!!!

In X-Precise thread (last couple pages) rg66 made a .pet to put an icon on the desktop for the 'fd0 drive'.

LxPup has everything installed for the fd0 but, you have to go to .pup_event to activate it and make it work.

I tried the X-Precise .pet in LxPup but it doesn't point to the correct directory.

Any chance getting this .pet for LxPup?

'Thanks'

PS: I can confirm (per Volhout) .sfs's don't get to the menu, same issue with a Google Earth.

Hi Volhout & sszindian

Can you pm me the contents of the /usr/share/applications/ desktop file for something that you think should be in the menu and isn't? It will either be the category that's not being recognised or it may have NoDisplay=true set.

You can find the recognised categories in /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu.

Hi sszindian

You could try desktop-drive-icons-0.0.5

from http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 81&start=1

to see if this helps....

I don't have a pc with a floppy disk to try....assuming fd0 is the floppy disk?

The logic to start desktop-drive-icons is in lxpup but untested.

fd0 drive

#35 Post by sszindian »

Both do put 'blank-icon named fd0' on the desktop however...
The mntfd0lx-1.0.pet gives the same error (can't find file or directory) as the one for X-Precise?

As far as installing the 0.0.5, really don't want all those extra drive icons on the desktop, trying to keep this one neat & clean as I can.

I'll live with it the way it is for now...

freeoffice

#36 Post by Volhout »

Hi PeeBee,

I think my problem relates to the freeoffice sfs, and not with lxpup.
I checked the folders you suggested, and freeoffice is there. It is also a recognised category. And it shows up in the menu as long as you don't run it.
After starting up freeoffice, all kind of strang things happen.

I think this SFS is not compatible with kernel 3.10 from Slacko 5.6.0

I got the SFS from
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 61&t=85713

After I run freeoffice, i start to see missing icons, some programs stop working, and I can't even shut down the pc anymore. getting into the terminal, poweroff still works, but that looses saved work.

Maybe I could ask 01Micko to compile freeoffice against Slacko 5.6.0

I can't attach a screenshot (why?), but the error message is "failed to execute child process "lxp-shutdown" (input/output error)".

Hi Volhout

Does the Freeoffice SFS work OK on Slacko 5.6.0 on its own without LxPup-by-SFS???

There could be conflicts in what is loaded in the 2 SFSs so maybe the order of loading is important???

Does it work on Slacko 5.6 k3.4.52 or on LxPup 13.10??

Cheers

Using your NEW .pet mntfd0lx-1.0.pet

Gives the error: No Floppy Device fd0 Detected

However, it does put a nice icon on the desktop!

Still able to mount the fd0 via '/root/.pup_event/drive_fd0' and selecting AppRun, execute, then mount fd0, it then appears in l/h side where you can click on it and contents will display.

That means this line

Code: Select all

probepart | grep fd0
is failing to find any mention of fd0

Can you post the output from just probepart

OR

you could try creating a desktop shortcut by:

Code: Select all

right click on desktop
Create new.... short-cut
enter a name
open the AppRun directory
drag and drop the AppRun into the Command field
choose any icon
close
right click on the desktop icon and edit
get rid of file:// from the exec line
change icon to media-floppy
save
and / or try the pet below

FreeOffice

#41 Post by Volhout »

Sorry PeeBee,

Not sure what happened, I had the problem yesterday night. This morning when I started using puppy (same USB stick, different PC) it still remained. Then I typed the message.

I installed FreeOffice in LxPup 13.10 (different USB stick), and did a quick check for the problem. No problem. I could type in the license key, everything worked, rebooted several times where I tried FreeOffice presentation, Wordprocessor, all worked fine.

Then I went back to my LX-e-fied Slacko 5.6.0 USB stick and tried that one again..... and FreeOffice worked fine. I am stunned. Maybe there was something wrong in the save file, that got repaired by rebooting. Maybe I should not trust that USB stick anymore. It is older, and physically damaged. But it worked until now. Is there a CRC mechanism around the save file (ext2) and around SFS'es ?

I'll keep a sharp eye if this happens again.

Sorry for the confusion I may have caused.

OK peebee...

Your last mntfd0lx-1.0.pet did the trick.... works fine now!!!

'Thanks'

PS: Sorry for persistence but I figure if your build offers something, the end user should be able to use it without issues... yea know, very few want to dig into code to use a computer!

Service Pack C

#43 Post by peebee »

Updated 6-nov-13

Service Pack C is available on the Download page from post #1
  • Download the delta file, save into the same directory as lxpup_13.10_1.iso

Click on the delta file to apply the changes and create lxpup_13.10_1C.iso (and/or _13.10_2C)

Check the md5 sum of the new .iso is the same as in the md5 file
Very few changes:
  • - 3 small "branding" changes
    - CD Boot splash screen change
    - Small change to PFind configuration to integrate with PCManFM better
    - internationalisation by Bert (many thanks) of lxpup utilities + tidying the format
    - new directory /opt/lxpup-xtras to hold extra pets - currently has the lx-right-clicks, the mntfd0lx-1.0 pet and desktop_drive_icons-0.0.5 pet
    - addition of pupmd5sum and pmenu3,0,0 **
    - printscreen button activated
    - PupClockSet2.2.1 added **
    - new LxPup Options gui
LxPup-by-SFS setup pets have been updated to match (apart from **)

delta iso ?

#44 Post by Volhout »

Hi PeeBee,

How can I apply the changes to my 5.6.0 build ? The iso is different I guess.
Isn't it possible to make a delta on the LxPup via SFS ? Or a PET ?

Hi Volhout

I have re-uploaded the setup pets in the LxPup-by-SFS thread to match - you should be able to download the new pet, uninstall the old pet from your system and then install the new pet - but I would make a copy of your savefile first....the only thing to watch out for is any changes you have made to panels etc might not come through the update.

If you've done a lot of tweaking I might be inclined to stay with your current setup as there isn't really much new....

It affects both LxPup13.10 and OpenBoxPlus.

Just something to be aware of.....

Problem found

#47 Post by Volhout »

Dear PeeBee,

I found the problem cause for the problems listed earlier. It has nothing to do with Lx or Slacko. It is in the PC's I used for test.

I wanted to create a nice puppy for my wife's EeePC X101CH. It has an atom 2600 processor with build in GMA3600 video. That is supported in kernell 3.8 and upward. Since my wife uses it with W7 now, I do the testing on our old laptop, a core-duo HP pavilion DV2000.

For the Eeepc I selected Slacko 5.6.0 because it has kernel 3.10, but.... 01Micko build that kernel with PAE.

And my test PC does not support PAE (actually I don't even know if the atom supports PAE).

Problem is ... it "kind of" works, and only shows problems occasionally. The only repeatable symptom that started me looking was the fact that Mplayer (in Slacko 5.6.0) did not want to play video. It did play the associated audio though.

Running the LxPup 13.10 (kernel 3.4 non PAE) and it works already for hours without a glitch. So now I have to find a non-PAE build kernel that supports my GMA3600 video. Seems that UPUP RARING uses 3.8 kernel with non-PAE.

I'll keep experimenting for a while.....

So far I really like it,

I installed it by extracting the files to a USB and running "Grub4dos". It runs really good. I haven't ran into an issue yet.

Hi Amgine

.....really a question for the Slacko thread as Firefox is part of Slacko

however this thread in the browsers section of the forum should give you ideas:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88128

I believe(??) the easiest way is to go into Help -> About Firefox -> Check for updates but you may need enough savefile if you are frugally installed.
