Hello, all.

Please find attached* a very simple CLI script which will allow you to
play a bit with the Puppy Icons Triangle.

I believe such a simple procedure was never suggested before.

The script offers the following choices:
- Restore the original top left placement
- Put the triangle at the top right of the screen
- Place it at bottom right
- Explode the Triangle as 2 lines at the top of the screen
- Exit the script.

The script does not touch the disk icons line at bottom left.

It was created using racy 5.5, so YMMV a little on other
Puppy versions.

To use:
download and install the attached pet.
Open a console and type

Code: Select all

PPin-place.sh
Feedback appreciated, as well as the results of your experiments.
Enjoy.

Mais c'est en anglais. Je n'y comprends rien.
Musher0, ça fonctionne. C'est une nouvelle corde à notre arc.
J'ai mis la présentation 2LI
Bonne journée.
2ème lecture : c'est le bazar en bas.

Translation : script is written in English. Iwas joking that i don't understand English. At the first sight, all was fine but a glance to the drive icons made me change my opinion, because they got garbled as shown on the screenshot.

Mais si je comprends

#4 Post by Pelo »

Oh ! sorry i did'nt pay attention. I was just telling Musher0 that the script has garbled bottom drive icons.

Hi, pelo.

My script doesn't touch the disk icons at the bottom.

To redraw them:
  1. right-click on one of the disk icons
    click the second line; a panel appears
    tick the rectangle on the bottom line of that panel
    click ok
    go back to the initial black console with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
    type xwin and press Return.
Your disk icons should appear normal now.

Best regards.

Also, to change the background color:
  • open a ROX filer
    right-click on Options
    click on Pinboard
    click on background color
    choose your background color by clicking around or inside the color circle

I've re-tested, and the bottom disk icons are never affected by my script.
Pelo, there must be something else at play on your desktop, here.

Hello, people.

Since this thread had no replies from the English-speaking public :), I've
provided a new version here:

Enjoy!

Hello, all.

Please find attached version 0.3 in English of my icon placement utility.
It is now named "Triangles.sh". Removal of my previous PPinPlace.sh
script is strongly suggested beforehand.

The goal of this script is to make the alternative placement of icons on the
Puppy desktop easier and faster, and to suggest some pleasant icon
"geometries".

To launch the script,
* open a console
* type

Code: Select all

 Triangles-0.3_EN
or

Code: Select all

launchTriangles.sh
* Please read the initial information panel, then
* hit the 'Return' key to get to the options menu, and
* choose an option by typing the corresponding 3-character combination.

Enjoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Various notes.
For best results,
* this script should be used on a "virgin" desktop, as soon as possible
after installation of your new Puppy. (Use of this script on a desktop that's
already heavily modified may produce a bizarre placement of icons.)
* May also produce undesirable results with the DUde or ToOpPy desktop
environments, or with pwidgets. The script doesn't interfere with anything,
but the appearance may be ugly if used with DE's other than ROX.
Things to do before using this script:
* Change your picture background BEFORE using this script if you don't
want to keep the default Puppy picture. (This script saves the initial
desktop; it can be recalled on demand. If it's "ugly" to begin with, you'll
be stuck with it!)
* If you usually remove, add or modify a couple of icons on the desktop
of any new Puppy, do so BEFORE using this script. (Same reason
as above.)
* Any localization (French, Hungarian, Spanish, etc.) that changes the
label of the icons should be performed BEFORE using this script.
Optional
* You may want to make a backup of of the initial PuppyPin at
/root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin, as a fall-back against chaos.
* Once you have found a pleasant icon placement scheme, please feel
free to further personalize it. Just keep in mind the caution note above if
you use this "Triangle" script afterwards.
Testing
* At this time, this script has been tested and works well on wary 5.5,
racy 5.5 and lupu 5.2.8.6. Since it doesn't call upon any exotic library or
utility, it should work in all Puppies offering the usual ROX environment.
* The disk icon problem reported above by pelo in the draft version has
been solved.
* Your constructive feedback will be appreciated.
Hello again, all.
Please disregard the previous versions above. I have posted an edited
bilingual (French OR English) version with 15 options here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#730118
Should the script persist in speaking to you in French (which is highly
unlikely, since I taught it good manners :razz:), check the language of
your system by issuing the command
Code: Select all
echo $LANG
in a console. It should say en_US, en_UK, en_AU, or the like.
If it doesn't, type
Code: Select all
LANG="en_NZ"
or the proper code for your country and restart the script.
Other localizations are yours for the making. :)
Enjoy!
