@mistfire -- being that Puppy is a "size matters" lightweight distro, that's already been done.

@mistfire Since X-slacko is directly based on slacko, that question might be better directed to the slacko thread. In a number of cases, there have been operational or compatibility reasons for retaining the full command scripts also.
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Re: Decluttering linux commmands in x-slacko

#888 Post by rg66 »

mistfire wrote:hi @rg66, I suggest that you should declutter more common unix commands by using symlinks pointed to busybox as many as possible and centralizing all the necessary files in a path and use symlinks to redirect the needed resource files. This will remove duplicate system files and greatly reduce the filesize of xslacko.

By the way, what is the release date of x-slacko based from slacko 6.3?
See Marv's post above as I'll leave that to the slacko developer (01micko).

As far as the release date of X-slacko-4 based on slacko-6.3, it's hard to say. I've been taking a break from it and have been using a half finished version for over a month.

My CD booting issue - solved?

#889 Post by ozsouth »

I discovered that the Xslacko 3.1 versions of cdrecord & isomaster were causing my non-booting remastered cd's.
Using the versions from Xslacko 2.3.2 appear to have fixed this.

Hallo, rg66.

A query, if I may. The XFCE desktop used in X-Slacko 2.3.2 (yes, I know I'm using the older version, but it just works perfectly on my old Dell lappie!) has, I notice, had quite a number of the applets removed from the task bar settings.

One that I would like to add back is the XFCE4 weather module. Is there anything resembling a relatively pain-free method for achieving this.....or were certain items removed for reasons unknown (perhaps in the interests of the KISS principle, maybe) ?

Ah, thanks for that, Geoff. There's so many Puppy repos around the place, I'm certain I haven't found a fraction of them yet!

Do I want the standard one.....or the DEV/NLS varieties?

@Mike

The DEV is the development files and the NLS is native language support, you won't need those.

Hi, Geoff.

Mm. Okay. Well, I've downloaded the weather-update plugin .pet, and installed it. When I attempt to add it to the panel, this comes up every time.....

And this is before it even gets added to the panel; I don't get the chance to set it up!

What am I doing wrong here? Any ideas? I've not had this happen before. A year or so ago, when I was running Xubuntu 14.04, the weather-update plugin had to be updated because of some glitch Canonical had discovered.....but that was very straight-forward, and totally fuss-free.

Is there any editing needs to be done? And if so, where do I find it?

It maybe compiled for the newer xfce 4.12 version, that may explain it, I'll see what I can find, maybe rg66 has an older version for xfce 4.10

@ Mike

The plugin from Carolina works http://smokey01.com/carolina/pet_packag ... -0.8.6.pet
Hang about I may be getting it wrong.
Yeah this works though you need to run this code in the terminal to link a lib file.
I tried it with the slacko weather but still no joy

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/lib/libxfce4util.so.6.0.0 /usr/lib/libxfce4util.so.7

Hi, Geoff.

Hmm. OK. Well, I ran that line through the terminal, then checked in /usr/lib; the link's definitely there. Still no joy, though. I reckon I might just have to give this up as a bad job, is what it looks like. Shame, 'cos I like XFCE's weather plug-in.

Never mind. There's always more than one way to skin a cat!

Did you try the Carolina weather plugin?, it works for me ok with the libxfce4util.so.7 link. I downloaded and setup X-slacko-2.3.2, installed the Carolina weather plugin and created the libxfce4util.so.7 link, all went well.

I'm pretty sure I used the isomaster in 3.1 to make the IOS's I uploaded which indeed do boot, although, I never did a remaster. I'll look into it and see whats up when I have time.

Geoffrey is correct, the wheather plugin in the X-slacko repo is compiled for Xfce-4.12. I did have one for 4.10 in the old repo (carolina-linux.com) but lost it as elroy didn't renew his hosting contract. I would use the Carolina plugin as Geoffrey has suggested.

@ rg66, Geoffrey.

Okay; fair enough. I'll uninstall the one I have, then dig out the Carolina version (I do know where the repo is for that!) I'll give it a try, and let you know how it makes out.

Cheers, guys.

@rg66, Geoffrey.

Nice one, guys! The Carolina xfce4-weather-plugin does indeed work in 2.3.2. I didn't know which one I actually wanted, so I downloaded all three. Started off with the newest one, with the intention of working backwards if I encountered any problems.

Needn't have bothered. Worked like a charm..! I shall have to remember this; I'm guessing this means that some of the other XFCE stuff in the Carolina repo will also work with 2.3.2, on account of it using the older version of the desktop, yes?

Anyway; much appreciated, guys. Cheers!

If anyone wants the last stable release of avidemux, i've uploaded a slackware derived pet here:

avidemux-2.6.10-i486.pet.

It needs QT4. I'm using Pemasu's qt-4.8.2.sfs.

@rg66:-

I've got a query.....and this is something I didn't even realise till a couple of days ago, despite having run X-Slacko 2.3.2 for several months now.

Besides using this one, I'm also using vanilla 570, which this is based on (plus the other Pups in my sig.....each in its own partition). It appears that X-Slacko has installed its save-folder into 570's partition (alongside 570's save-file). It's running sweet as a nut (no problems there; each partition has got bags of space).....but does anybody have any ideas as to why it's gone and done that? Might it have something to do with them both using the same identical kernel?

Just curious, that's all..!

Not sure why that happened. First save is done by /usr/sbin/shutdownconfig, must be getting something wrong.
