Finally have power after 2 days, Africa is a nice place to visit but .........

The closest thing I have to test with is an Asus Eeepc with an Intel Atom N570 and GMA 3150 graphics. 3b7 booted and worked like a charm off of a flash drive (vfat). Don't have an SSD drive to test with and don't want grub4dos on it. It has win7 and the wife and kids use it.

Maybe it is a BIOS or hardware issue, my 10 year old Acer lappy (which finally died last month

) had issues with a lot of puppies. ACPI was a serious problem as well as shutting down and sometimes even booting.

If you have a copy of Tahrpup you could try using that zdrive, just rename it zdrv_slacko_5.9.3.sfs, that's most likely the kernel I'm going to use for v3.0. (Although, "Starting with kernel 3.3.4 , the gma500_gfx driver works without adding any boot options." But I see lots of issue with that chipset and linux with a google search.)

Might also be a thermal issue with my board. The heatsink is poorly designed at best -- it's held on with springloaded screws, so that the slightest vibration bounces the damn thing around like a balloon in a gale. Ugh >.<

Probably doesn't help that my heatsink paste of choice is the cheapest crap on the market outside of the grey goop that Dell (etc) uses -- mine is copper based (the eBay sellers who hawk it claim it's gold -- I don't think so, gold doesn't turn your fingernails green

). I only use it because it's one of those things where if you order ten pieces you get a quart bag of 'em... my local tech shop gets 'em that way. I'm great friends with the owner so I get what he can't use, free. Since he literally can't avoid ordering too much, I've a steady supply.

I've got some silver based stuff that he tossed me the last time I was over there, though (same source, double the price, he tells me -- but double almost nothing still ain't much!) and I might try it once I scrap off the plumbing dust that's there now. I'll probably notice a difference

I keep meaning to put some sort of cushion-y stuff under that heatsink to hold it better anyways -- the problem is more that it's got room to wiggle than anything else...

While I'm at it I'll re-download 3b7 -- I have the bad habit of downloading without checking MD5s and then coming up with problems later

Crazy busy with spring farmstuff and new old vehicles but I'm still here and have been running 3b7 (with the Tahr 3.14.20-non-PAE kernel in my case) pretty much across the board. It's been rock solid, as has the ESR Firefox (I keep the profile on my boot partition and symlink from /root/.mozilla, customize the cache and bookmark backup limits after some savefile bloat issues, and use the Tabs on bottom and Ghostery extensions). The only thing that has bitten me or my fellow 3b7 folks has been Abiword when I've used it instead of loading the LibreOffice SFS. I did hide it on one of my users machines and make LibreOffice the default after a mishap or two. It's never the same thing but whether it be formatting, printing, or saving, Abiword seems to ferret out our weak spots

Hey Marv, good to hear you haven't had any issues (apart from Abiword).

As you know, I like to keep X-slacko fairly slim in the apps department, just enough to get by. Abiword is only there as a basic doc utility, loading the Libre Office sfs is probably the way to go. To be honest, when I need to do docs (rarely), I spark up my Win7 box and use M$ office.

I played with X-slacko 3b7 , for the last two days and I discovered a very stable puplet .

It has the 3.4.94 kernel nonPAE . For the first time I was able to turn a kernel into PAE . The driver from AMD's site installed with no fuss , which is rare giving my peculiar card . Also it recognizes my PCI Express SSD OCZ Revodrive 3 - very tricky piece of hardware for Linux . I had to use mdadm to create a fake RAID in order to use it ( it sees it as 2 flash cards ) . I have to mention that X-slacko 2.2 did not see this hardware ...
Upgraded Firefox and Flash Player and also installed Libre Office easily .
Gnome MPlayer works very well except it does not play embedded subtitles . The VLC 2.1.0 does not play subtitles at all ...
Given the good experience with the 3.14.20 kernel in LxTahr ( also PAE ) it looks like the next step promise well .

I'm using vlc-2.2.1-i486-1alien.txz as well as the vlc mozilla plugin npapi-vlc-20150301-i486-1alien.txz from here: http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... /pkg/14.1/. It loaded a subtitle file automatically and works fine.

I also updated dbus to get rid of a dbus-plugin error but vlc seemed to run ok without the update. You can get the latest slackware dbus and dbus-glib pets from here: http://smokey01.com/rg66/X-slacko/pet_packages-X-slacko

However I was wrong

about GNOME MPlayer . All three .mkv files I tested then were without embedded subtitles . I realized that checking with VLC . It does play embedded subtitles , so no need for VLC for now ...

I finally got ftp to work in thunar. Download the file below and extract it to /usr/share/gvfs/mounts and restart your computer.

You can test with ftp://ftp.mozilla.org and when the login window pops up choose Connect anonymously and then connect button. It should stay connected until you unmount it.

It's actually a part of gvfs and is included in newer slackware gvfs packages.

No but gvfs is required for the trash bin and browsing remote file systems.

"Xfce4 GVfs Mount is a small application that is meant to mount remote file systems only. It was initially written because Thunar 1.0 is lacking that feature"

It should add a menu entry in Filesystem once mounted (used to unmount) and remove it on unmount.

The pet installed , but the menu entry was in Utility . It started well but it did not recognized a Huawei MediaPad . I was warned it might not work .

I have to do a few edits to the menu categories so PPM doesn't change it.

That's a good sign anyway, at least it tried to detect it and make a new udev rule.
