How To Associate a File with an Application

1. Right Click on the file say an mp3 and go down to Run Action.

2. Drag the Application that you want to open the file in usr/bin (for example, vlc media player) onto the Run Action Dialogue.

3. The file will open the intended application when clicked on it.

4. If you want these associations to be permanently included in a remaster, then how would it be done?

Hello, Smithy.

When you do the three steps above, I believe you are creating a "MIME-Type".

"MIME-Types" are preserved in folder
/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/

When you do your remaster, make sure that the number of files in
/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/
and
/tmp/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/
are the same and you should be fine.

(The remaster process provides a pause for the user to do this.
As for me, when that part is done, I erase the supposedly "virgin"
/tmp/root that the process has created and drag (copy) the contents
of my working /root to /tmp/root before letting the process continue.)

Another way: save /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/
separately and re-introduce it manually (overwrite) once your
remastered Puppy has booted.

Since I never had the problem myself, it would be best for you
that another experienced Puppyist validate my information.

Best regards.

Hi Musher,

Thanks for that, I was not copying over the right folder (s).

Step 5.

If you change icons for the file types, a folder called mime icons will appear in the rox sourceforge.net folder and globicons might have changed also,
so I copied these over to the temp root before remastering.
And yes the remaster comes back with the changes.

That's great! Thanks for the feedback!

Have a good one! (day, beer, whatever!) :)
