Move from Slacko to Precise while retaining settings?

#1 Post by WoodLark »

I currently use Slacko 5.5 on my desktop computer and Precise 5.6.1 on my laptop. I find that I much prefer Precise Puppy. Is it possible to install Precise on my desktop in such a way that I can preserve the settings from my Slacko save file?

Easy answer
No.
They are different versions of Puppy and they do not mix. Save files are specific to the version of Puppy they were made for. Each version of Puppy has its own tweaks and ways of doing things.

There is a newer 5.6 version of Slacko. You could use the Slacko 5.5 save file with that.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Hard answer.

Some things can be copied over.

Firefox / Thunderbird settings are easy. Wallpapers are easy. Icon sets can be done.

What settings do you want to preserve?

I was afraid that would be the answer, but I hoped otherwise.

What I really wanted was additional software I had installed, but I was pretty sure that Slackware vs Ubuntu would make that impossible.

Thank you for responding (and confirming my fears).

Here is an interesting problem!

I decided to start installing Precise and rebuild all my personal settings. However, Precise (I tried 5.6.1 and 5.7.1) cannot see any of my hard drive partitions (there are 11 on 3 drives). It sees only my floppy drive and my cd/dvd drive.

Slacko sees all of the partitions with no problems.

Any suggestions?

Are they shown in /mnt? Are they seen by fdisk?

The drives are not in /mnt nor are they seen by fdisk.

My guess would be that Precise does not contain drivers for my hard drive controller (Dell SAS 5 by LSI Logic Corp.).

Without some of these I'd say you're right..

Code: Select all

mptsas, mptscsih, mptbase, scsi_transport_sas, scsi_mod, sg, sr_mod, libdata, ses, sd_mod, megaraid_sas

I hoped the "Retro" version of Precise would contain the needed driver, but alas, it does not. I guess I'll stay with Slacko.

Unless you grab the src and compile it yourself- yeah.
