Pyro64 0.2alpha, 19 May 2017
The very first Quirky Linux built from packages compiled in OpenEmbedded.

There is another forum thread discussing OpenEmbedded here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110453

I started this new thread just for the Pyro distribution. This is likely to be an ongoing project, using the current source code base.

The name "Pyro" is the latest release, version number 2.3, of OpenEmbedded (and Yocto).

Here are some release notes and issues:

Blog announcement, with download links:

Feedback is welcome!

Hi Barry,

Out of giving sites a 2nd chance (it's right next door to me), I just tried to download from NLUUG, and for the "pyro64-0.2usfs.xz", it seemed to go ok and was the correct size, with the md5 checking correctly.

But when I tried the "devx-0.2-pyro64.pet", which I tried twice, the NLUUG downloaded something that was 1.1GB in size & the md5 did not check correctly either time.

Going to wipe everything from the NLUUG site, which is ok since I haven't trusted them for a few years now, and will try Ibiblio for the same downloads.

[UPDATE: both devx & usfs.xz downloaded & md5 checked correctly from Ibiblio, not sure what happened (twice) with NLUUG for the devx}

Yes, others have reported that problem with nluug.

belham2,
I saw your other post:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 821#949821

Well, Quirky is intended as an experimental distribution, not to replace the mainline Puppy.

As I stated early on when developing Quirky, it is likely to change. Indeed it has, a few times, including various "frugal" experiments.
Yes, there is a frugal mode, which I haven't given much attention to, as I personally prefer the full install these days.

Recently, Jan this year, there is Easy Puppy, another Quirky, which is "container friendly" and is frugal mode, with save to a folder.
So, no save file.

There is a thread in this forum on Easy Puppy. I have neglected it the last month or so, as have been working on compiling from source in OpenEmbedded.
I will have another look at it soon.

Ha ha, just looking at the page I wrote years ago, when Quirky first started:
http://barryk.org/quirky/

...very out of date, but it did spell out that Quirky is experimental, and subject to change, as indeed it has compared to the items listed on that page.

Easy is an interesting new direction, see the page I wrote introducing it:
http://barryk.org/easy/how-easy-works.htm
And there is a forum thread:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=109958

...yes, Easy needs some TLC, I will probably do a new build using these Pyro64 packages.

I used the install to partition script from Slacko64 6.9.9.1 to a 16gb
SDHC card.

I got Kodi setup and working (once the devx was installed).
Kodi doesn't want to shut down, restarting x to get out of it.

never more

- old iso's able to work from CD without installation and able to be remastered as in old puppy's

- one bones as offered from time to time in the past by Mr. Barry to permit to build own versions on a very solide base

the last one was probably Quirky-Unicorn-experimental-6.2.1.91.iso, was an iso, was a minimal one and did excite the puppy lovers for a long time (a too long time  !)

:?:

(accessory question: did the announced Puppy / Quirky with 64 kernel for 32 bit applications be offered to download as ISO?)

Billtoo,
Thanks for testing!

You don't need to restart X to kill kodi.
Just minimize the window, then right-click on it (in the taskbar) and choose "kill".

I did a google, found heaps and heaps and heaps of posts about kodi not shutting down. I read one post where the guy said this problem has been there for years and not resolved.

It is blamed on misbehaving add-ons, however, there are many posts from people who have this problem and who have not added any add-ons. Only the built-in ones that come with kodi.

Here is one discussion:
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=288333

And here is a fix:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ko ... responsive

...it works, but it is an awful fix. It solves the problem by crashing kodi, which results in a crash report in /root.

What you do is go to /usr/share/kodi/addons/skin.estuary.xml
and change the text "Quit()" to this:

Code: Select all

System.Exec ("killall --signal SIGHUP kodi.bin")
But, if we can't fix it properly, I will have to resort to doing this.

Oh, one other thing, you don't need the "devx" to run kodi. if it won't start for you, try running "kodi" in a terminal.
If it crashes, there will be a report in /root, and if it starts, it runs a log in /root/.kodi/temp/

I am keen to know what you guys think of kodi versus xine.

The download is 290MB, and kodi is about 30MB of that. Enormous.
On the otherhand, xine is very small.

So, what does kodi do for us that xine doesn't?

As I would prefer to have a smaller build, I am inclined to leave kodi out, but it would still be available via the PPM.

...unless there are some really compelling uses for it, that xine won't do.

Just remembered, there is pupRadio and pupTelly in the Multimedia menu, but I don't know if that still works. Can't recall, maybe it needs mplayer.

No, that didn't do it. Well, it did, but left behind an empty window in the tray. It needs a "SIGINT" (2) to properly kill it, so this works:

Code: Select all

System.Exec ("killall -2 kodi.bin")

Tried on some laptops
I couldnt get x to start.
I tried modesetting 1366x768 non vesa
Test x now works ok.
So click ok ,finished
goes to prompt. Type xwin and then get
x fails to start try xorgwizard.

Then I tried vesa 1366x768 non vesa and get the same result.
Test x works ok but x fails to start

Quirky normally picks the radeon driver for these laptops

There was a message when running xorgwizard
xorgwizard-cli line 80 ddcprobe: command not found

Xine works ok for me. Works with pupradio.

Galculator needs libquadmath.so.0

I don't find any static IP (LAN) settings in Pyro64. It is missing from Networking setup, which was available other Puppy DerivatiVes. Found only DHCP settings in LAN setup.

#14 Post by ETP »

Initial Test:

Hi Barry,

Install, using the 8GB image with Win32Diskimager, was to an 8GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB 2 stick.

That booted fine on my old Samsung netbook with working sound and wireless.
(It has an 4xIntel Atom CPU N570 @ 1.66GHz with 2045MB of ram)

Subjectively it is very quick and easily on a par with your old T2 builds.

A list of missing libs is attached but I am yet to see any impact caused by their absence.

The only app so far installed is the latest Google Chrome stable.
For anyone wanting that, I have also attached a pet to install and then to subsequently update it.
Please note that it does not provide any sandboxing. Nor does it give any pretence
that there is any sandboxing. It does not upset CUPs permissions.

My little box Asrock AD2550-ITX has the famous poulsbo graphics chip.

I could get x to start after some tweaks...
modesetting 1280x1024
Test x works but then get

Code: Select all

x fails to start try xorgwizard
Note, launching just

Code: Select all

X
I've got a useful hint: no screen defined

Thus I wrote

Code: Select all

 Section "Device"
    Identifier "gma500_gfx"
    Driver "modesetting"
    Option "SWCursor" "ON"
 EndSection

to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

EDIT: to a new file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf

and added
modeline "1280x1024" to xorg.conf
and appended

Code: Select all

drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1280x1024.bin
to append line of syslinux.cfg

After following changes in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code: Select all

# This loads the GLX module (if present). xorg 7.4/5, need explicit disable to disable... change "Disable" to "Load" if reqd...
# Disable "glx" #LOADGLX
     Load "glx" #LOADGLX
# This loads dri module (if present). 7.4 loads it by default, have to disable... change "Disable" to "Load" if reqd...
# Disable "dri" #LOADDRI
     Load "dri" #LOADDRI
Running modesetting driver accelerated now.

Very good that you got there in the end!

it was reported earlier in this forum thread, that xorgwizard is broken, as 'ddcprobe' is missing.

I have compiled that in OE (it is in the 'xresprobe' package) and it will be in the next release.
I have also compiled nouveau and amd/ati xorg drivers.

So graphics support should become much better.

Have also fixed some bugs in the SNS.

I have an IBM thinkcentre desktop with an Intel chip.
I haven't been successful in getting to the desktop.
I installed pyro on 32gb stick. Good news ! Plop boot manager will start it to run.

Very close to the desktop . The mouse pointer forms and
the bottom launch bar briefly flashes on the screen.

However it automatically goes to your screen 'Try xorgwizard'

xorgwizard seems to work properly, since the log says it exited properly and I can see xorgwizard's screens properly.
but it won't launch the desktop.

I have seen a warning that a line of code won't run.

I haven't tried modesetting.

If it helps I included the xorg log file and X11 folder.

Is there any way of removing the top menus in mped text editor
since these are confusing?

By the way the special cut down version of nano text editor allows a menu and is only about 20k

./configure --enable-tiny

ddcprobe

#19 Post by L18L »

don570 wrote:I have seen a warning that a line of code won't run.
That is missing /usr/bin/ddcprobe.

Guess you can simply change

Code: Select all

		Modes "1280x1024"
to

Code: Select all

		Modes "1920x1080"
in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and restart X.

Or use attached ddcprobe
Click to uncompress and copy to /usr/bin
Then xorgwizard should offer 1920x1080 too.
