OB Precise 14.07.26, Woof-CE build

#1 Post by vicmz »

This is OpenBox Precise based on Precise 5.7.1, as built by Woof-CE 0.3 with the same kernel 3.9.11 PAE. At first I used gzip compression, which including the additions (mainly Médor's full Abiword 3.0 and special themes, as well as the latest versions of popular Puppy programs at the time) made the v14.07 ISO a bit bigger (205 MB). Version 14.07.26 is somewhat trimmed and xz compressed, making for a 158 MB .iso file, a more comfortable size and more acceptable for a Puppy build.

Note that this is my first time woofing a puppy, so take it as an experimental build. At first it had two bugs that had been previously fixed in early releases of Precise Puppy, the glib-compile-schemas and the keyboard setup switching back to English, these are fixed in the ISO presented here. There might be other issues, and although it seems to work fine (in fact I'm using it daily), I recommend to test it first before adopting it for daily use.

In theory Precise 5.7.1 PET/SFS packages of the forum and repos should work in OB Precise 14.07.26, there's even 666philb's QuickPet Precise in the Setup menu (NOTE: 666philb has updated it sometime after releasing OBprecise). If there's a package that doesn't work, you can run the program from a terminal window and paste the result in a reply to this thread. And if you want to install a language pack, make sure it's a version made for Woof-CE builds of Puppy, otherwise many interfaces will remain in English.

 Openbox Precise 14.07.26 has special keyboard shortcuts:
CTRL+ALT+W=default word processor,
CTRL+ALT+B=default browser,
CTRL+ALT+A=default audio player,
CTRL+ALT+V=default media player,
CTRL+ALT+G=Galculator
CTRL+ALT+E=default text editor,
CTRL+ALT+P=default paint,
CTRL+ALT+K=default spreadsheet editor,
CTRL+ALT+M=default email client,
CTRL+ALT+T=ROXTerm terminal
CTRL+ALT+S=Take a Shot! screen capture,
PrintScreen=Quick screenshot opened in mtPaint.
CTRL+SHIFT+S=PupSnap screen capture (popular tool with an Imgur upload client)
CTRL+SHIFT+X=PupShutdown (shutdown options)

See also how to extend your use of the keyboard, including a cool option to use when your mouse doesn't work:

And a few posts below, an option to quickly open bookmarked directories (folders) from the Openbox right-click menu.

If you like dark themes, you can use this pet to match the GUI/mime icons, as in the pictures below (do not uninstall):

To restore previous GUI/mime icons (do not uninstall):

https://yadi.sk/d/LJJ_Y-vqTgN3x

See also the ToggleDocumentColors addon for Seamonkey and Firefox, to make web pages dark with a button click or by pressing a key combination. A nice extension to read at night, minimizing screen brightness.

 If you have a wide screen, you may want to set the top panel to minimize when not in use, as in the screenshots below.

 NOTE: For those who still have v14.07, which is missing a keyboard shortcut for terminal, nilsonmorales provided a patch to easily add CTRL+ALT+T shortcut by installing the pet attached to this post. And if you prefer ROXTerm instead of urxvt, here is a pet including that patch to define the CTRL+ALT+T keyboard shortcut (after restarting Lxpanel, Menu > Desktop > Lxpanel restart panel, you'll also be able to launch ROXTerm by clicking the terminal icon of the top panel):

https://yadi.sk/d/JulHDGyeXGq9X

:!: List of possible issues

So far these issues have appeared in OB Precise, all of them with solutions though:

- VLC is muted even if other players work as usual ---> NOT happening anymore, but if it does happen, see instructions here to solve it. No need to download a new ISO or install a package.
- Booting to a black screen, only cursor and partition icons visible (seems to be hardware-specific). This can be prevented by making a save file big enough to avoid resizing it in the future (1 GB or more recommended) and by installing only applications most frequently used. Hi nilsonmorales, so everything works OK that's good news.

Thanks for the patch idea, I modified some urxvt config:

Code: Select all

     <keybind key="C-A-g">

         <command>galculator</command>
And turned it into a pet, attached to the first post. After installing, it should be possible to open the terminal by CTRL+ALT+T without restarting X.

For urxvt, selecting the text in the terminal window is enough to copy, you don't have to press CTRL+C for example. To paste, simply middle-click with the mouse wheel, or if the mouse doesn't have a middle button, click by pressing both left and right buttons at the same time.

Now for those who prefer ROXTerm instead, here is a pet (also in the first post) including that patch to define the CTRL+ALT+T keyboard shortcut. After restarting Lxpanel, Menu > Desktop > Lxpanel restart panel, you'll also be able to launch ROXTerm by clicking the terminal icon of the top panel. Do not install the patch attached to the first post if you want to install this ROXTerm pet.

I'm releasing a new ISO tomorrow. I managed to reduce its size to 160 MB, which is more acceptable for a Puppy build. I also included ROXTerm, and I'm updating a couple of Puppy programs. The devx remains the same, I'll just change the name to match the version number. After this I might release small updates as PET packages if necessary.

Good, I've learned to woof. :D But the experience will be complete when I learn to use the kernel kit.

This is a nice distro that reminds me of Fluxpup. I like the latest ABI Word (still trying to figure out its flaws) and PDF Viewer seems like a smart choice for PDF's. I use MPlayer and I'm not so sure the installed MPlayer is complete. I had some errors when running one of my typical scripts in terminal on that one. I'll detail that later and a fix might be just to hit the PPM. I can't stand the Seamonkey browser but I still like the choice of install as it comes with my favorite Seamonkey HTML editor.

I installed it to a USB stick and it's booting fine. I'm having my typical create puppy save file issues but that's not unique to your distro.

Thanks for the nice build!

Playing with OB Precise 14.07, Woof-CE build, now.

All seems to be extremely good OOTB. no obvious gremlins.

Will post a more detailed report later, very nice so far.

Many thanks and best regards - Ray

Have tried it on an old Compaq 700 desktop with 512 Megs RAM plus the same in a swap-partition. Surprisingly it runs quite well. Also have it frugally installed on a Compaq v5000 laptop with an AMD Sempron processor +1024 RAM, which runs very nicely indeed. If the overall size of the distro can be shaved down a bit, even better. No problems so far.

I posted some bugs in the bugs section of the board. The biggest issue seems to be the pupsave. See my post in the bugs. I will keep updating as I find (and hopefully find fixes for) issues.

I still like this distro very much!!

All the best!

Senor, have you a printer ?
Do you load pictures from your camera with Puppy ?
3D movies,
depending of it, the size of your puppy can be reduced a lot

OpenBox Precise 14.07.26 is available in the first post. It's smaller (158 MB), xz-compressed.

Don't worry, I'm aware of that. I didn't want to push your server with a .iso file, especially a big one, but I had many connection timeouts these days, so I had to use some upload client to avoid restarting the uploads. I discovered that uploading at night is more convenient, so this time I was able to use a web upload. Thanks again.

I'm sorry, I can't reproduce the bug. Maybe you're in a full install? As I usually boot as frugal install, I haven't tested anything about full install. Or maybe if you create the savefile first, reboot then make your customizations.

ROX bookmarks

#13 Post by vicmz »

 If you've been using the OpenboxPlus pets, you may already know this feature. You can bookmark directories in ROX-Filer and have them as shortcuts in the Openbox right-click menu. Remember that the partition where the bookmarked directories are located must be mounted to access them. See the screenshots below for reference.

No, no, sorry vicmz, that is not what i meant at all, i was talking gibberish, totally unrelated to my server

Please, by all means upload it...unless you've received a message that there's insufficient space. I can't believe that Puppy is gnawing on 94% of my server space but i'm making some more accommodation arrangements, so it shouldn't be a problem for long, if at all

Extended use of keyboard shortcuts

#16 Post by vicmz »

Keyboard shortcuts are practical, quicker, and they can give a break to your hands, you can use them to avoid the mouse unless you need it. In the first post there's a list of shortcuts configured in OBprecise to activate certain programs with the keyboard. However, many people don't know that software interfaces in general are full of sets to operate by keyboard, which was in fact the way things were done before the mouse was invented. If your wrists and fingers ache, or if you want to prevent those aches in the first place, you should consider this alternative. Let's see some examples.

Openbox and most window manages allow switching window focus by pressing Alt+Tab, and switching window tabs by pressing Ctrl+Tab. By pressing Alt+Ctrl+Q the Openbox right-click menu appears under the mouse cursor, and you can select entries with the arrow keys (up, down, left, right), then press Enter key to confirm.

In file managers/explorers, use the arrow keys to select a file and Enter key to open it with the default program.

For most program menus, press Alt plus the first letter of the menu you want to see, for example Alt+F for the 'File' menu, arrow keys to select and option and Enter to confirm.

By pressing the Tab key you can move to the next button/entry box. Page Up and Page Down keys, and arrow keys can be used to scroll through pages without using the scrollbars. Use Home/End keys to go directly to the start/end of a page.

Most applications have universal keyboard shortcuts to open a file (Ctrl+O), select all text (Ctrl+A), open a new tab (Ctrl+T), new window or file (Ctrl+N), close a tab (Ctrl+W), cut (Ctrl+X) copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) text or files, save modifications (Ctrl+S), and exit the program (Ctrl+Q).

Keyboard shortcuts may be a little different in some programs. Explore the menus and learn how to manage some functions with the keyboard. You can also search cheatsheets with lists of keyboard shortcuts of your favourite programs.

Finally, most Linux systems allow cursor movement by numeric keypad, press Shift+NumLock to enable/disable this feature. It isn't as fast as an actual mouse, but it does the job, and if your mouse doesn't work it buys time until you are able to replace it with a mouse that works. Click here to learn how to use mouse keys.

Nice one Nilson :D

 For those who want to install VLC in OB Precise, OscarTalks VLC without Qt works fine:

http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks

If sound is muted for you in VLC, check this:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 466#793466

 If you boot to a black desktop (happens in some computers), most likely the desktop is not completely loaded, but it isn't locked, right-click and the Openbox menu will appear, select Restart X server. Also, make a save file big enough to avoid resizing it in the future (1 GB or more recommended) and install only applications most frequently used. This solves it 99% of the time.

In my computer this usually happens with JWM as well, and not only my derivative but official Puppy builds as well, so I suppose it depends on the hardware. However, in JWM for some reason I have to restart X at least three times (even pressing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE), sometimes doing something silly like opening a window, expanding it full screen and then restarting X, to get the desktop fully loaded.

Very nice, vicmz. Thank you! Everything seems to work for me on a Dell Inspiron 5100 (with just 512MB RAM, so I love the very low resource demands). I made quite a few tweaks to the desktop, but was impressed how good OBPrecise looks out of the box.

These are thumbnails, click for full size:

Image Image

Odd quirk, on this computer having the framerate synchronized to the vertical refresh resulted in a very low framerate (less than 10) which caused GL games to run slow. Didn't have that problem using GuyDog previously. But I was able to use "vblank_mode=0" when running a game and that solved the low framerate for me. When I booted OBPrecise on another computer, though, no low framerate problem at all.
