Puppy Slacko 5.5 XL

Disclaimer: I am not a programmer, nor a developer. I am a novice user experimenting and trying to discover all Puppy aspects and possibilities. Try this puplet at your own risk and have as much fun as i had while remastering! :D

The idea behind Slacko XL is a complete, full-featured, cd-sized Puppy OS without need of an immediate internet connection to get more useful - or not so useful - software packages.

What 's the difference between Slacko XL and Phat Slacko? Well, not much... More apps, more themes, some customizations and the devx included in the ISO file.

I didn't change the name/version (eg from slacko 5.5 to mypuppy 1.0 - only added 'XL') because all the hard work has been done by others, i just played a little.

Many thanks to:
- BarryK for creating Puppy Linux & 01Micko for developing Puppy Slacko
- Puppy community for all the help, especially R-S-H and Karl Godt for helping me solve some serious problems with this remaster

Changes

Replaced:
- JWM -> Openbox plus extras 1.5.3 (lxpanel)
- Abiword & Gnumeric -> Libre Office 4.0.0
- Mtpaint -> Gimp 2.8.2
- Screeny -> Pupsnap 2.2
- Pplog -> Perligram 1.0

Removed:
- Picpuz
- Rubix
- Xsoldier
- Galculator
- E3 editor

Added:
- Obmenu 1.0
- Obkey 1.0
- Bleachbit 0.8.8
- Openshot 1.4.3
- Skype 4.0.0.8
- APR 0.2
- Dropbox 1.1.43
- Simplebox 0.5a
- GTK Theme Maker 1.4
- Bombic 0.0.1
- Pipewalker 0.9.4
- Scummvm 1.6.0
- Castlevox 1.2
- YAD 0.12.4
- JRE 1-7.0-15
- CBViewer 0.8
- QT 4.8.2
- JWildFire 0.67r3
- Adobe Air 2.6
- DevX file
- Slacko ascii
- Potenza iconset
- Sphere iconset
- Tron iconset
- Dandelion wall
- Cursor themes
- Greeting message

Updated:
- Firefox 19.0 -> Firefox 23.0

Customized:
- Several Puppy parts...

To Do (notes to me):
- Better and more varied software selection
- Less themes, icons, cursors etc to save some space
- More right-click options for all files
- Try some portable & some adobe air apps to include
- Some custom art (XL wallpaper, splash screen etc) would be nice...

hello koulaxisis,

Tested on DELL E6430 (Intel i5) laptop from 4Gbyte USB stick (sdb1).

Great work you did. This really lifts Slacko out of the grey puppy world.
Snappy, and a clean uncluttered desktop. Good choice the iPAD2 iconset (I use it in most of my puppies) and a good choice of programs.

The idea of "for basic functions simply install the best there is" is the only decent choice if aiming the distro at users. (Developers only try to make something work on an old machine in minimum RAM).
But fact is that many end-users end up agonized by the fact that a simple Abiword does not do .... (fill in what is lacking) and install libre office anyway. Same for some of the other programs.

I had one technical problem. I mounted the USB stick by clicking on it, and could access data on it. Then I closed the file manager, and immediately clicked on again to bring back the file manager, and the system froze. Everything was dead for at least 2 minutes. Then I powered down the laptop. This can be a "once in a lifetime" thing since I could not reproduce.

Again: congratulations on this puplet. I would put a screenshot of this puppy in the eye candy thread, and at post #1 of this thread. That will definitely attend people.

Thank you very much for trying it and posting this feedback!

I really love Puppy and i have installed it in many friends' computers. But they are always nagging about the same thing: Puppy is not really ready by default for usage by a newcomer. They have to do a lot of customizations, extra setups and downloads - and they don't have the time or the will to do so! That's why i did this remaster... Most of them were about to stop using Puppy, they wanted something more "ready-to-do-the-job". So, i created this to make their computing life easier... and after testing it a lot, i decided to share with everybody, not only my friends.

I have run it on 6 computers up to now (netbooks, laptops and desktops) without this particular problem you met. I hope it was just random freeze. If not, i 'll look further on it, thanks for reporting!

Thanks again for your time!! :)

hello koulaxizis

very nice puppy. Manual frugal install on HD, Thinkpad T61

I saw your modified Firefox 23, was going to download and try it, then I saw this and thought why not go all the way :D

Only one issue, the volume control icon in the tray doesn't function for me. Volume IS working, but can't adjust it via the icon, scroll back and fore, nothing changes.

Other than that everything seems to work very well, wireless connection worked right away with Frisbee, video, all okay, very nice desktop, with useful software pre-installed. Still exploring but once again very nice puppy.

Thank for sharing this!

Thank you for testing, i 'm really glad you liked it!! :D

Right-click on the volume icon -> Config Window -> Hardware -> choose which slider to use. This should fix the problem!

Hi, just downloaded iso. Is there a checksum available, couldn't see one? Thanks.

Why not? Just run md5sum on your iso and put it in the main post.. browser downloads are not perfect.. especially from that other OS :wink:

Now you know how create a md5.
There you just have to copy and paste the md5 in a text file, then upload it to your page on Sourceforge.
Cordialement,
