Slacko 5.6 - feedback, bug reports

#17 Post by Billtoo »

I added a few applications and did a remaster, burned the iso and
installed to a 16gb SDHC card using the Puppy Universal Installer.
It didn't put the files where I wanted them but I made a directory and
moved them there, ran grub4dos and it's working great.
Computer is an emachines D620 laptop.
Slacko 5.6 is working well, thanks again for the new versions :)

How should I remaster, so as to include all of the extras/tweaks I've added?

You need to burn the original slacko iso (pae or non-pae)
to cd or dvd and from your custom slacko run the Remaster Puppy live-CD from
the setup menu.
I let it create a directory on the hard drive (screenshot) where the
new iso will be built.
It will prompt for the live-CD and copy files from it.
I just followed the prompts and entered what made sense to me, I
didn't choose to burn the dvd right away (you'll see the prompt) but
had it create the iso on sda1, renamed the iso to slacko56rem.iso and
then burned that.
The prompts sometimes recommend which option to choose, anyway, I hope
this helps you.

Trouble is...
I've already done all that you said [except I didn't make the ISO, just burned straight to the CD-RW]...
And when I booted the resulting CD-RW, I didn't get the exact same environment with all my extras. :(

e.g.
I copied /etc to /tmp/etc
And...
/root to /tmp/root

I just did a simple remaster, yours is beyond that I guess so maybe
Barry or Mick could help you.
Mine started as a manual frugal install to a SDHC card, I made my
changes and remastered after burning the original slacko 5.6 pae iso.
Sorry that I couldn't help, good luck.

Hi Sylvander: What have you installed that did not show up in the remaster?

When I do a remaster I never copy etc or root. I do move folders that are a hidden folders into tmp/root. Let me know what the problem is that you are having?

Cheers

Hello oldyeller,

I decided to do another remaster, and take notes.
So...
A. Was running in "Slacko-5.5.91-ataflash"
That's Slacko-5.5.91.iso with pmedia=cd changed to pmedia=ataflash within the ioslinux.cfg file in the ISO.
With a slackosave file that included multi-various tweaks.

B. Ran "Puppy Simple CD Remaster" as follows:
1. Rebuilt the SFS file to include all from "/" down.
2. Used sda5 as the working region.
3. Made zdrv_slacko_5.5.91.sfs file.
4. Created "puppy_slacko-5.5.91.sfs" file, in /initrd/mnt/dev_save/puppylivecdbuild/
5. Program created /tmp/root. I deleted the contents of /tmp/root, and copied in the contents of /root.
6. I chose to customize /etc and left it as was produced with no alteration.
7. Didn't edit isolinux.cfg
8. Rather than directly making a custom multi-session CD-RW, I made the "customppuppy.iso". I assumed [incorrectly?] that this would make a custom multi-session optical disk. I chose to use a CD-RW.
9. Used "burniso2cd" to use the iso file to burn a CD-RW. Thought it would automatically be a multi-session CD-RW, but apparently not.

C. Booted the new custom CD-RW.
1. There was a slackosave+SFS for the old CD remaining on the internal HDD.
Don't know if these were used, or caused problems; seemed not.
2. Booted to the desktop.
Had to configure the usual language/region/keyboard/screen-area.
Once that was done, all my tweaks appeared to be present.
3. I clicked "Save..." on the desktop.
Normally in a multi-session DVD, this would trigger a save to a folder on the multi-session disk, but not here.
Instead, it was trying [but failing] to save to a [no-existing, suitable] slackosave file.
There was an existing slackosave file matched to the version, but not being used methinks, don't know why not.
4. I tried to reboot, and this triggered PupSaveConfig to run, asking me to make a pupsave file, and save to it.
But it aught to have been saving to a folder on the optical disk.
I'm confused. :?

D. How should I make a multi-session CD-RW using the "custom-puppy.iso"?

Hello, all.

I installed this new slacko as frugal on /mnt/sda2 in its own folder, and
did the initial boot from grub4dos menu, like I do for most Puppies.

On 1st boot-down, slacko went through the motions but did not save
anything. I had to create the save file with dd...

Upon reboot, ROX had lost the backdrop and refused to put up another one.

I stopped the investigation for now and will resume problem-solving at a
later date. Writing this from the less "porcupine-ish" wary 5.5.

Hi Sylvander,

You seem to have won - next time don't save just make your multi-session-banking-DVD as you did earlier using Precise 5.6.1 then test.

I think this thread is meant for Reports not asking How-To.

Hi Mick,
Guvcview is nowhere in the repos. :(
What happened to 1.6.1s from the 5.5 era?
Updated the repos just in case and still missing.

BTW updating takes a really long time. Are BK's enhancements only for the ubuntu repos?

I am having in issue (which first occurred in Slacko 5.4).

When i close my netbook, it will suspend and sleep there like it normally would. The problem is though I can't wake it up. I have press on the power button to shut it down manually. I have no idea why this happens.

It has to be something puppy specific, because slackware 14 doesn't do this on me.

The devx for the 4g-NON-PAE version is devx_slacko_5.6.sfs

The devx for the PAE version is devx_slacko_5.6.0.sfs

You have decided is to use Slackware, which is inferior system to Arch. Now that missing package in their repository is the consequence.
It's the other way around, Arch is inferior to Slackware.

You are using Slackware, AND Puppy based on that same Slackware. So what's the point?
I am not trying to make a point. And I removed Slack and put slacko on it.
