Minor cosmetic issue with QtWeb

If you name the icon in /usr/share/pixmaps as QtWeb.png (not all lower case) you will get the icon in the upper left corner of the JWM window and in the tray button which looks more elegant.

As things stand though you would also then have to alter the icon name in the .desktop file and run fixmenus and jwm -reload and then re-assign the icon to the binary QtWeb in /usr/bin to get the pinboard icon back. I suppose creating a symlink might be easier.

VIDEO REPORT: Precise Puppy, version 5.6.9

VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF
Resolution (widthxheight, in pixels): 1280x1024
Depth (bits, or planes): 24
Modules requested to be loaded: dbe

Glxgears in 5.6.9:

Code: Select all

188 frames in 5.0 seconds = 37.539 FPS
183 frames in 5.0 seconds = 36.435 FPS
188 frames in 5.0 seconds = 37.471 FPS
which is more than twice as fast as Precise 5.6.4
...but it's still no Wary 5:

Code: Select all

1336 frames in 5.0 seconds = 267.042 FPS
1335 frames in 5.0 seconds = 266.828 FPS

On the whole, Precise is working quite well and I'm excited about it. It's nice to be running an optimized build of Seamonkey (after vanilla builds on Wary); the slightly slower display server is evened-out by the slightly faster browser.
Primary - Intel Pentium 4 2.40GHz, 571MB RAM, ATI Radeon 7000. Linux Mint 17 Qiana installed.
Secondary - Pentium 3 533MHz, 385MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 Pro ULTRA TF. Precise Puppy 5.7.1 Retro full install.

Pcur cursor selector program.

Directs you to install a "cursor_ themes package" from the "Puppy Package Manager" desktop category of the "Puppy- noarch" repository.
No cursor themes package in this repository.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Precise Puppy version 5.6.9, released Jul 2013

1st impressions are very good - fast and all seems to work OTB.

Running a manual frugal to an ntfs partition on the E732 laptop, booting with grub4dos from an ext2 SDcard.

Will play some more and post an Hinfo report later.

QTWeb does not work for live video at BBC News Channel. Go to http://bbc.co.uk/news/ and click on LIVE BBC News Channel on the right of the page. You may need to be in the UK to view this. Sound plays but there is no live video displayed. However, pre-recorded video clips do play correctly.

I assume there may be similar failures at other live video sites. (No, not that sort ;) .) Can anyone confirm?

I added Clementine music player from ppm and it works fine on many
radio stations but will give an error on some.

EDIT:I added these debs from http://packages.ubuntu.com/ in the
Precise updates section and Clementine works with all the radio stations that
I've tried so far.
These are too big to attach to this message.

Following on from what Billtoo wrote above, it is possible to get QtWeb working with BBC News Channel Live with the addition of this package only via the PPM:

gstreamer0.10-plugins-base_0.10.36

This is really weird. On subsequently opening QtWeb the above fix does not work and the problem persists.

The more I use QtWeb the more I realise how buggy it is. There are frequent crashes which require OS reboot at various sites. Attempting to bookmark sites can also cause the same crash. QtWeb may be lightweight and fast but it is ultimately a pile of doggy doo.

Hi Terryphi et al,

session advised - under settings try checking "Ask where to save each download"
- that enabled some downloads which failed when trying to download to a pre-specified folder.

It seems unlikely it will help with your Qt-Web BBC video hitch - but perhaps it's worth a try?

My regards

Pcur cursor themes
bigpup reported in the Forum that Pcur directs to install 'cursor_themes' in the Desktop category in the 'puppy-noarch' repository, in the Puppy Package Manager. But, it isn't there.

Yes it is.

The combobox in the PPM is set to display "GUI apps only".

'cursor_themes' is not strictly a "GUI app". Change the selection to show all apps, or use the search box.
OK, need to have working understanding of the selections of the PPM combobox.
I always test a Puppy version from the eyes and understanding of a new user of Puppy.
I wonder if a new user would understand this?
Should all apps (any type) be the default setting for PPM combobox?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I believe new user uses his eyes. Old user uses his spinal cord. That is the reason why old user does not notice when the default behavior changes.
