The only linux I have ever used is Puppy. I formerly had a very old machine and Puppy was perfect fit for it. That computer died and I have a new bigger and faster computer. Puppy works great -- I use Puppy 528.005 as my operating system. I haven't used Windows since Win 98 died.
I would like to branch out and try another linux system.

The puppy's frugal install system is very original and I have not experience of other distros that use this system. I have instead experience of installing other distros ubuntu like (mint and other derivatives of ubuntu) which can be intalled with "persistence" mode by unetbootin or grub2. Perhaps other distros not ubuntu like support this "persistence" system but not by unetbootin. If you want to experiment with other Linuxes, the easiest system is ISObooter. Start reading part way down.
If you want to do hard drive installs with persistent storage, your best choice is to make a new partition and do full installs. Read here.
In particular, read the stuff about adding another Linux to your current system by putting its bootloader on the partition boot sector.
