[ 2698.997076] b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 666.2 (2011-02-23 01:15:07)

It does not say that firmware loading has been succesful or something and it tries to load it once before and here 3 times.

Could it be firmware problem. I need to check if 3.9.9 kernel has changed firmware status. Or...if my firmwares has somekind corruption...or then I am barking the wrong tree....deja vu.....

No...no new firmwares. When I compiled the b43 firmwares and compared, the size is exactly the same as bytes with the new ones and older ones.

Edoc. Have you tried other wireless manager. If you have used Frisbee, switch to use SNS and vice versa. Right click Connect icon and select Choose internet connection wizard and change the manager to other one.

I am about clueless now. Next I suspect the b43 module, corruption of connection manager, moon and aliens. Tinfoil hat time....

I have been testing back and forth between Internet Connection Wizard and Frisbee.

I just tried SNS and same result.

If there is a b43 - Frisbee problem could Frisbee be interfering with the others?

I ask because in other versions there used to be an option to disable/enable Frisbee - presumably for that reason.

No. Frisbee has been integrated to the Puppy. Work done by Rerwin.
I let this rest for awhile now....

When you ponder this again ...

I just loaded Wheezy.

It defaulted to wl "wlan0 wireless wl pci: Broadcom 802.11b LP PHY

(Note 1: In one spot a message stated that wl is not listed as supporting WPA encryption.)

(Note 2: The device is listed as a BCM4312.)

I tried wl & it failed so I added it to Skiplist in /etc/rc.d modulesconfig

Then I added the b43 module - rebooted and it also failed.

Edoc. I start to wonder with what Puppy with kernel over 3.2.X kernel does it work. Could you test with Barry`s Precise Puppy or with Slacko at sometime. Something interferes but what it is, eludes me. 3.2.X kernels have different set of firmwares, that is the change from Lucid Puppy. Also wpa_supplicant has been upgraded. Dhcpcd is different, we use now Rerwin`s patched version, which is better with poor signal. Kernel and kernel included b43 of course have probably seen some changes in source file. And so on...

About wl.ko. It should support WPA encryption. Someone who really uses it knows better. But....I havent read any complaints about wl.ko not handling WPA....so conclusion by lack of complaint.

Hi Both

wl fully supports WPA - the message edoc is seeing arises because netwiz is old and it's database has not been updated to include wl - just answer yes and all is fine. SNS and Frisbee use wl+wpa without complaint.

FWIW - I've had no problems with the Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11a/b/g in my laptop in Upup Raring 3.9.9.1 - but there are many Broadcom variants.....I think the significant bit of edoc's report may be the "LP PHY" bit.....

Your wifi may be "blocked" on boot - is there a wifi light and is it on? - try

Code: Select all

rfkill unblock wlan
before trying to connect. (I've had this problem in mick's recent slacko 5.6betas).

Google for "broadcom lp phy" brings up:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/230556/w ... sta-driver
and the answer suggests special firmware is needed:
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer
Another link leads to http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/ where many broadcom-wl tarballs can be found - broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2 is suggested in another post.

Cheers

Edoc and Peebee and all the other world which follows this exasperated trial and error discussion.

I checked the thread. It does not tell what chip id he had. But....it seems he was succesful with the other firmware set. I dont know how compatible that is with 3.9.9 kernel b43 kernel module, but well....this is experimental helping period.

I did download the firmware source and then I compiled it with firmware-cutter and created a pet of the firmwares.

This pet installs them straight to the /lib/firmware/b43/*

So after installation the firmwares are in use. It means that Puppy all-firmware installation mechanism has been bypassed and they should be found without execption. At least I think so.....lol....

That rfkill unblock wlan command does not hurt. Interesting to hear that it has been needed in Slacko. I keep that in mind. It has not been needed in my builds so far.

I deleted the savefile and devx (just to remove another variable) and rebooted twice.

I then copied and installed your PET (I'm uncertain what it is supposed to do - it said it was installed to the Utility menu but I don't see it there).

I rebooted again.

I tried Frisbee - same failure.

I tried Internet Connection Wizard & said OK to add wl - same failure.

I tried Simple Network Setup (observed that under "Description" there is only the letter "x" - same failure.

I then tried "rfkill unblock wlan" before re-trying all three - same failure.

WiFi problem

#132 Post by sszindian »

edoc:

I to have had my share of WiFi connection problems with puppy's in the past...

What I have found... (it worked for me, so worth a try) Instead of using the wizard, frisbee, or connect icon on desktop... click on the 'TRAY INTERNET ICON' and select 'setup network' then use the 1st option (simple SNS) and see if you can connect? Not sure if it's a r/click or l/click on that icon in the tray, not using a puppy at this writing so can't ckeck but you'll find it - setup network -

Why this worked... I don't know but figure it must be some code out of place somewhere between all the connect functions... maybe in woof?

mesa software rendering

#134 Post by charlie6 »

Hi Pemasu,
also @anikin
again seeking to get MESA software rendering on raring ... :)

...how to reproduce this on Upup Raring-3.9.9 ...? is it feasable ?

Charlie
many thanks for your PM a few days ago !

Although being totaly newbie to woof2, i got a try with woof2 attempting to reproduce to create swrast_dri.so on raring, the same way it has been produced on wheezy built ..., but, without success  : after the step ./3builddistro, in rootfs-skeleton, /usr/lib/dri was still populated with i915_dri.so, i965_dri.so, r300 ... and a 460K sized swrast-dri.so (although the package-template /usr/lib/dri has only swrast-dri.so in it ...!). But this allowed me to understand that there has been no compilation in that build process ...! So i gave up with woof2.

Also i tried something else, a kind of workaround which seems working nice here:
Here is the method, presented as command lines:
#1. start raring-3.9.9.X

#2. delete all files inside /usr/lib/dri; don't need them anymore if using software rendering.
rm /usr/lib/dri/*

#3. pick-up these 2 files from dPup-wheezy-3.5.2.X.sfs:
#/usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
#/usr/lib/libGLU.so.1.3.08005
#4. ... and copy them to Upup-Raring-3.9.9.X to the same location

#5. remove existing symlinks to- and libGLU.so.1.3.1 (all must be removed)
rm /usr/lib/libGLU.so
rm /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1
rm /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1.3.1

#6. create the following symlinks
ln -s /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1.3.08005 /usr/lib/libGLU.so
ln -s /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1.3.08005 /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1
ln -s /usr/lib/libffi.so.6.0.1 /usr/lib/libffi.so.5
ln -s /usr/lib/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2

#and 7. VERY IMPORTANT: restart X
Through this workaround, raring runs, such as wheezy, with mesa-8.0.5;
OpenGL feature «TEXTURE» works also.
and gCAD3D runs with TEXTURE + fast :D

Charlie6. Not bad. Your persistent and stubborn problem solving has revealed that mesa version or the way how ubuntu and debian compiles them has difference when it comes to your cad app functionality. Interesting.
Real detective work. Thank you of your post.

What changed between Lucid 5 and upup Raring (and Wheezy) that could be blocking the wifi nic?

hp brightness controls

#137 Post by solnyshok »

my first post here.

Installed to hp 2530p (4 GB RAM). Brightness keys do not work. I can change brightness via Laptop-Mode. However, there after changing brightness setting and clicking "Apply Brightness changes" nothing happens. But if I change performance plans (e.g. switch between TURBO and POWERSAVE - brightness adjusts.

Question - can I modify some scripts to add brightness controls adjustments via hardware keys? I checked that required kernel module (hp-wmi) is loaded. (compared this with LIVECD of Linux Mint, where same module is loaded and keys work). Maybe it is a matter of missing key binding like in GNOME desktop environment? I do not seem to find here any control applet or utility to define these.

Or can I somehow fix Laptop-Mode scripts (if there are such) to re-initialize brightness when "Apply" button is clicked?

Dell Inspiron 1525 - uncooperative Broadcom

#138 Post by edoc »

As usual Broadcom makes a nuisance of itself (good luck explaining that to the Steam gamers as they move to Linux).

I gave up on the internal wireless nic & went with a little Netis USB nic - all is well - just dislike the extra accessory hanging out of the laptop & needing to be watched so it doesn't get lost ...

Sigh.

I was having trouble so I tried Blacklisting b43 to take the internal nic out of the picture.

I forgot that in so doing the internal wlan0 - which I had disabled in Frisbee in favor of the USB nic wlan1 - had been removed from the equation and that the USB nic was now seen as wlan0 ... which was disabled ...

Re-enabled wlan0 and it's all happy now ...

Hi Pemasu,
hereafter some infos about:
1. geany's or rox's keymap mismatch (qwerty for azerty) after QuickSetup first run and keymap-set to be-latin1 map;
2. gnumeric's behaviour when Menu/View/FreezePanes is activated →see here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 4&start=89

I went to get a try on puppy-Raring-5.6.94 with kernel 3.9.5: none of the above points noticed.

Further test: about gnumeric, i copied as much as possible 5.6.94's gnumeric stuffs and goffice 's stuffs (/usr/bin/gnumeric + folders in /usr/lib + libs in / lib and /usr/lib) into 3.9.9;
result: no improvment, not worse also; no change in the gnumerics above point 2 behaviour.

I also got to compile gnumeric 1.12.1 and 1.12.4 in raring-3.9.9 1st from ubuntu archives + deps; and aftrwds from debian archives + deps. Both trials were unsuccessfull (from debian stuffs: error in the make process: gtk >=3.2 was requested whereas gtk+-3.0 from sid has been installed ...??).

So i gave up  .

Altough, hope this could help for eventual further updates ...
Charlie
