Updated Chromium for Lighthouse64

#586 Post by gcmartin »

@Peebee has been making a 64bit version of Chromium available to community users over the past 2 releases.

I just tested on a pristine Mariner version without loading the Chrome SFS at boot time.

Instead, @Peebee's contribution, Chromium64 was
  1. downloaded
  2. moved from the /root/spot/Download directory to /root
  3. Open ROX to downloaded SFS
  4. Rightclicked to run sfs-load
  5. Chose CD as the target to save
Image
Success message gotten, but, I could not get it to run after it as whether I wanted it for "...default". In a terminal, I got this message

Code: Select all

bash-4.1# chromium
/usr/lib64/chromium/chromium: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.18' not found (required by /usr/lib64/chromium/chromium)
Has anyone found a path to launch success using this SFS?

Means that the infrastructure (glibc) of LH 64 602 Beta 2 is not current enough for the demands of Chromium64......

Regarding this post and those leading to it:

I need a suggestion for which commands [and where] to add to the grub.cfg file in Lighthouse64-6.02-B2_Mariner.iso, so there will be no auto-save during a session nor at shutdown/reboot, but will be presented with the choice to "save or no save".

Anyone?

@Syylvander has reported that the XFCE desktop for LH64 is 32bit. I have never used it and am at a disadvantage in being a help. But, others of you have used this WM.

Questions
  • Have you noticed this?
    Does it impact use?
    Is there a current 64bit version that offers benefits
?Curious of this finding.

Ideas for LH64 Updates?

#590 Post by edoc »

Any chance we can gain some insight as to potential additions/updates to LH64 from the newest release of Caine?

http://www.caine-live.net

Sure has some neat features and some UEFI workarounds ...

Anyone get a DJVU reader to work in LH 64?

PPM says I have djulibre installed but "djvu" "djview" etc. don't work from Console, nor can I get it from toying with various Run Action settings.

Any thoughts, please?

I have a radio schematic I am trying to view ...

Thanks!

The updated FF is complaining about VLC:
VLC Web PluginVersion 2.0.6 Twoflower, copyright 1996-2012 VideoLAN and Authors
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ vulnerable
They offer a bunch of Linux distro updates for VLC but I'm not sure if I should use any of them or wait for a Puppy/LH64-602-b2 compiled VLC update.

WDYT?

I just poked around and didn't find this ...

Where, please, may one set a password to protect access to LH 64?

Just a simple log-in thing at boot-up - just to keep a basic-skills computer user off the laptop.

I haven't tried this since I do everything as root, but have you tried 'menu/setup/personalize settings/ ...getting started (upper right)/password wizard' ?

You should also be able to set up a password in the bios/firmware of your box which would theoretically keep everyone out.

Thanks!

Here's the thing - as I look at those two password options I recall that I am never asked for a password when I power-on the computer - so the one on the left won't help, & I believe that the screen saver password only engages once the computer has been on & times-out to screen saver mode - yes?

If that's all correct than do I really need to set a BIOS password?

I want to require a password when someone tries to access the computer which has been powered off.

Note: I boot this laptop from USB in order to get around the MS/UEFI monopoly-mess. I'll have to experiment with a BIOS password to learn if the workaround also compromises it.

Thanks again.

If you are booting with GRUB, you can add a password line to your menu.lst like

Code: Select all

title Lighthouse
password abcde
Make sure that you have an alternate way to boot the machine, like off a CD, in case you make a mistake.

Seamonkey updated & is now forcing a window every time it opens whining about the need to check plug-ins and VLC is the trigger.

Seamonkey -> Help -> Plugins: Version 2.0.6 Twoflower

There isn't an update in PPM (latest there is 2.0.4).

I'm guessing I need the Slackware 64 version?

http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/build/

Is this the correct file?
vlc-2.1.5.tar.xz 06-Jul-2014 10:16 19M
NOTE: If libvlcplugin.so is in that ".xz" it's not visible to me! Must be another source somewhere ... help, please?

I need the updated "libvlcplugin.so" to replace the old one here:
/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/

What, me, make mistakes? :roll:

Is it the grub.cfg file (looks a lot like a typical menu.lst) where I insert this?

Should I insert it after "set timeout=10"?

Code: Select all

insmod png
background_image /menu.png
set timeout=10
menuentry "1 Lighthouse64" {
    linux /vmlinuz
    initrd /initrd.xz
}
Thanks!

You have GRUB2, so I don't know where it should go.

I just found the instructions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Passwords

Complexity comes with power ...

I wonder if someone could create a simple "Set GRUB2 Password" entry, via a PET, for the LH64 Menu?

It could be only for All Access or also break down some of the user and/or menu options.

I just need something simple to keep a basic computer user from accessing the computer - an initial superuser password requirement, prior to the display of any Grub menu items, should get that done.

Anyone good with GRUB2 out there, please?

I'm trying to sort out why I can load LH64 on my Acer W500P Tablet if I interrupt the BIOS-boot process, Save & Boot, but not if I try to book via grub4dos.

So far I've received a couple of private messages with suggestions but no joy ... I continue to Search the Net and the associated file & folders ...

In /root/.startmount is a file called config but I don't know what the settings mean:
CHECK:0=false
CHECK:1=false
CHECK:2=false
CHECK:3=false
STATE=disabled
VIS=enabled
RADIO1=false
RADIO2=false
ALSO: Is there any reason why changing SATA Mode in BIOS FROM: AHCI Mode TO: IDE Mode may or may not help? Or might it create new problems?

Hello @Edoc.

On Boot-Time passwords
A method which has been available for quite some time to stop unauthorized persons from booting a PC is to set the BIOS's password feature.

Placing a password on the BootManager is in addition to what can be done using BIOS setting. Both of these, redundant as they are, will defeat most unauthorized from booting a system.

But if you are trying to stop agents in case of seizure, you may need some other methods of boobie traps to do so....self destruct like a "please wait ..." during boot along with hiding sensitive data in the cloud so that it is not in the same premise as the machine. :lol:

A Holiday Season Message to this thread's users

To Everyone who has participated in keeping this fabulous distro alive, I say "Thank You". I hope we can, also, pause for a moment to privately thank @TaZoC for what he did for us in this distro's presentation.

Thanks @TaZoC for what you done for us over the years with you ideas, your demonstrations, your assistance, and your understanding of useful functionality in a modern PUP distro with the ease of use you took great steps to provide us! Thanks :!:

Peace on Earth with Good Will to All.

I have read elsewhere on the Murga-Linux Puppy Forum where users admire the methodology & quality embedded in the LH64 project.

I know I am appreciative of it for sure!

Praying for TaZoC's well-being and grateful for his shared-investment in this technology.

A blessed Christ-mas to all.
