Hi @Eathray. Haven't had any contact with him since late fall of last year. He did share how grave it was but did not want it public.

I, like you and others have hoped for the best for him. He provided great leadership, even after his illness took its toll on his health as he completed the last release of Lighthouse. With what he shared with me it was an amazing feat from him to get this into our hands, even as his health was destabilizing.

It was absolutely amazing. I personally consider the LH64-602 release "A Work of Art" as he extended what he had accomplished in his prior release(s). And with his LH64 website, toolchain, and all he embraced for us, his presence, piecing knowledge, and the information he shared was a great guide to users; experienced or not.

Hope this helps

gcmartin - that was a wonderful & well-earned tribute to him. Thanks for sharing that.

While here - are there any updates that are critical to run - given the bad news about the Shellshock bug?

Thank you all for the answers.

I certainly hope tazoc will enjoy a recovery... and hopefully someone can keep the community informed as to his condition.

I hope nobody will take this as morbid, but has anyone backed up all the Lighthouse releases and software packages... just in case? Obviously tazoc's illness is more than a cold or flu bug, and if the worst were to happen, it would be horrible to see all his wonderful work lost.

Just a thought. My wife lost both her parents this past year. We do loose people. Of course, my hope is to see a full recovery and a 700 series release of Lighthouse... I'm sure you all hope the same.

With the age of the software packages, if security is a concern, you're probably better off not running LHP. It pains me to say that, but I'm not going to try to convince you that its currently secure. Most of the default applications have had major updates since LHP 6.02 was released.

If you dont mind learning to ride a horse again... try out the latest Fatdog beta. It's got a bunch of features which will help keep it up to date as time goes on. (like an actual system update method)

Since TazOC is MIA at the moment... I'm focusing my efforts on improving that.

He and I were talking about setting up an rsync to pull down everything onto another server I had, but we never managed to make it happen before his latest hiatus. I can scrape his server easy enough... but I dont want to kill his bandwidth and incur him charges if he's not ready for that.

Honestly of more importance isn't what hosted online... but all the scripts and stuff he has locally on his machine that he uses to build his releases. Having all of his prewritten scripts that one can update and drop into a future release instead of having to try to strip it all out of a past release and then update it would be the most important thing to have.

That way someone can pick up if he decides, or has to, completely back off from any future development.

I'll try to send him another message tonight.

q5sys,

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you've tried to be helpful to tazoc, and I'm glad for that. As I say, I think it would be awful to see his legacy disappear.

Not really too concerned about security. I have several computers running multiple versions of Puppy each, and I haven't had so much as a browser hijacker in more than half a decade, let alone anything serious. Puppy in all it's various incarnations seems to be immanently safe. I don't want to get cocky about that, but that's my honest experience.

Hopefully tazoc will recover and bring us a version 700 :D

The non-Mariner didn't boot for me. Has there been an issue with this file?

Trying the Mariner, next. I just chose the smaller file first.

If there is a financial need - I'm sure that LH64 users are grateful enough to donate to remove any stress around hosting - allowing bandwidth for data transfer - so that you can continue his work until he's able to return to it.

Please keep us updated.

I heard from Taz today! So thankfully he's still with us. He said he will try to make a post here when he's able. im going to talk to him again about making a backup of his server, and maybe if he decides to cease dev, i can pick up where he has left off.

VLC 2.0.6 is throwing an error when I try to play an mkv file:
VLC can't recognize the input's format:
The format of 'file:///media/New_Volume/Once%20Upon%20a%20Time%20-%20Season%203%20Complete-ChameE/Once.Upon.a.Time..S03E01.HDTV.x264-ChameE.mkv' cannot be detected. Have a look at the log for details.
Anyone else seeing this?

Is there a fix, please?

Thanks - David

I am not a user of VLC and there are many others more knowledgible. But until they arrive with a solution you might consider:
The "log" mentioned in the message and if VLC accepts plugins. I wonder if the VLC from FATDOG or Slacko64 addressed this as they may have been compiled or newer.

Anyone ...

If you are NEW, or are a LH64 "Live" user or have not noticed there is a far-reaching technology that may have been overlooked by some of us.

Go to Menu>Setup>Remaster Lighthouse LiveCD. Read the opening parable. This distro has so many gems quietly kept that it is still ahead of its time.

Here to help

Did you mean to type Setup rather than Settings?

Menu>Setup>Remaster Lighthouse LiveCD

Thanks for pointing that out - quick & simple backup & rescue method.

Updated Chromium for Lighthouse64

#586 Post by gcmartin »

@Peebee has been making a 64bit version of Chromium available to community users over the past 2 releases.

I just tested on a pristine Mariner version without loading the Chrome SFS at boot time.

Instead, @Peebee's contribution, Chromium64 was
  1. downloaded
  2. moved from the /root/spot/Download directory to /root
  3. Open ROX to downloaded SFS
  4. Rightclicked to run sfs-load
  5. Chose CD as the target to save
Image
Success message gotten, but, I could not get it to run after it as whether I wanted it for "...default". In a terminal, I got this message

Code: Select all

bash-4.1# chromium
/usr/lib64/chromium/chromium: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.18' not found (required by /usr/lib64/chromium/chromium)
Has anyone found a path to launch success using this SFS?

Means that the infrastructure (glibc) of LH 64 602 Beta 2 is not current enough for the demands of Chromium64......

Regarding this post and those leading to it:

I need a suggestion for which commands [and where] to add to the grub.cfg file in Lighthouse64-6.02-B2_Mariner.iso, so there will be no auto-save during a session nor at shutdown/reboot, but will be presented with the choice to "save or no save".

Anyone?

@Syylvander has reported that the XFCE desktop for LH64 is 32bit. I have never used it and am at a disadvantage in being a help. But, others of you have used this WM.

Questions
  • Have you noticed this?
    Does it impact use?
Is there a current 64bit version that offers benefits
?Curious of this finding.

Any chance we can gain some insight as to potential additions/updates to LH64 from the newest release of Caine?
