Lighthouse 64 602 Beta2 with GIMP-2.8.4

#46 Post by Billtoo »

I moved my Lighthouse64 install once again, this time to a hp desktop
pc.
I booted with the option that doesn't load x and uninstalled the
proprietary Nvidia driver, then rebooted.
It booted to the prompt and advised doing "xorgwizard-puppy" which I
did, chose probe and the proper screen resolution and it went to the
desktop.

How can I "not" write to savefile at shutdown/reboot? I tried pupsaveconfig, but once that's installed, I can not reboot....

Thanks

I hit a wall here.

I have an iso-burned DVD in the drive but it does not show up as Lighthouse64*.iso but rather as a bunch of files and folders none of which contain that.

WDYT?

@Edoc, I thnik TaZoC wants you to use the ISO file, itself, rather than the DVD. If you have the ISO file on your HDD, just point the utility to that location and it will extract the files its looking for.

Hope this helps in understanding.

Just time for a quick report, all working well but it was necessary to add nouveau.noaccel=1 to the kernel line with my onboard Nvidia graphics. If not, computer freezes with a garbled display.
This problem reared it's ugly head somewhere about k-3.5 and later.

Code: Select all

VGA compatible controller : nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Otherwise looking good so far in brief testing.

1.
Completed the installation of these; Xfe is now functioning.
Had to run Firefox as root, so as to save the files to my Flash Drive where I keep all installed PET files.

tazoc wrote:For SaveMyModem maybe you can compile it from source:

Yikes!
I've never compiled anything.
Am reluctant to attempt it for fear of making a mess of it.
Might someone more experienced produce a PET, or else give me detailed instructions?
Even if given, they might be beyond my understanding.

tazoc wrote:Please try the Lighthouse 64 boot option
pfix=noautosave
Enter it on the kernel line. From the LiveCD boot menu, press <tab> (BIOS firmware)
Did this [SUPERB!], but [even though I save the session changes] it only lasts for that session [not auto-applied at the next].
How should I make it permanent?

As the gatekeeper said in The Wizard of Oz "Well, that's a horse of a different color!"

I'll copy it to a different USB stick & move it over.

OK, USB stick iso and partition complete.

Booted OK when I used the selection to bypass the problematic Radeon driver.

As it turns out, 3 reboots of the Linux Live media system was required to. both, circumvent the error message and get a successful driver installation.

I will open a thread for future LH64 reference that addresses just this single issue by consolidating the symptoms with a resolution which worked..

Here to help
Sure appreciate your persistence and taking the time to share the solution!

I may need equal persistence to sort out the Radeon problem on my HP Pavilion g7

I haven't really tested it, but I added "pfix=noautosave" to the boot command. I did this by adding an entry to the syslinux.cfg file.

Code: Select all

label NoAutoSave
linux vmlinuz
initrd initrd.xz
append pfix=noautosave
menu label 2a Lighthouse64 with no auto save
text help
Start Lighthouse64 normally with no auto save. (pfix=noautosave)
endtext
I don't know if it is necessary, but I also changed the save interval in the Puppy Event Manager to 0.

When it boots, it says it is in "Pupmode 15", which might mean it is working.

edit: I went ahead and did a frugal hard drive install. I have a preexisting Grub install. This is the Grub entry I used.

Code: Select all

title Lighthouse64 Linux 602 frugal in sda3 dir L64-602 ataflash noautosave
rootnoverify (hd0,2)
kernel /L64-602/vmlinuz pmedia=ataflash psubdir=L64-602 pfix=noautosave
initrd /L64-602/initrd.xz

KDE4 workaround

Thanks, Jim. KDE4 freezes shortly after starting here. So I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, and typed xwin openbox. Then this workaround works here. Copy and paste into a terminal:

Code: Select all

rm -f /root/.kde/Autostart/pup_event
I hope that helps.

Re: Pidgin Logs

#58 Post by tazoc »

tlchost wrote:I normally move .purple out of /root to /mnt/home and use a symlink to keep it out of the save file anmd share it between various puppies.

LHP has it in /root/spot and moving it to /mnt/home and using a symlink will not allow log files to be written.

Is there a work around?

Thanks
Yes, by default in LH64 and FD64, pidgin runs as user 'spot', and spot cannot write to files not owned by spot. This is to prevent web-connected apps from messing with your important files. So make .purple owned by spot, (root can still write to files owned by spot.) Open a terminal in /mnt/home/ or (where ever your .purple resides,) and type:

Code: Select all

chown -R spot .purple
If for some reason that doesn't work, you can run pidgin as root:
Open /usr/local/bin/defaultchat with a text editor and change pidgin.sh to pidgin
Same goes for /usr/share/applications/pidgin.desktop, in the line that begins with Exec=

No change: It's possible that the problem is caused by a conflict with the NVIDIA driver. Here is the xorg.conf file that opens when I try to open the kstartupconfig4 file that is requested:

Good job! If the installer shows a 'UEFI hard drive' (frugal install guide) button to the right, (on a machine with a GPT hard drive) you can try that. Let us know if you have any questions. The install guide (based on FD64's) is also here:
http://www.lhpup.org/help/faqs/uefi-harddrive.html
It only works on a machine with UEFI firmware, typically with Windows 7/8. If you don't have the 'UEFI hard drive' button in the Universal Installer, let us know.
INSTALL NOTE: When one clicks on the Desktop Setup icon that menu shows a generic Puppy Universal Installer but when clicking on the Star icon in the bottom left corner then going to Setup the same app if labeled Lighthouse Universal Installer.
Yes, both launch the script /usr/sbin/puppyinstaller, modified for LH64.
SETUP NOTE: It is unclear what to choose in order to browse compatible apps for LH64-602b2
Click the 'Install' icon on the desktop. That will direct you to compatible software; package names should contain 64, x86_64, AMD64 or 'noarch'. Lighthouse Update and PPM will only show those. Does that help?

Yes, it does show "UEFI hard drive" & I started the process, but ...

I don't see a way to boot without a Savefile.

The Frugal install will not allow sda4 to be seen and used as it is in use, it only sees the USB stick.

BTW: sda4 is an ext3 Filesystem

Am I missing it or does the option to boot like the common "puppy pfix=ram" need to be added to the other several boot options in the menu?

So I understand that for now there is an extra step to install Frugal - one must first create and use the USB/UEFI flash drive and then perform the UEFI hard drive for Frugal?

Is autosave the one that you see on reboot, or is it the one that defaults to every 30 minutes? I want to control whether or not I write to the save file when I reboot/shutdown.

Tried the second method....works...will try the chown, since that would mean not changing the individual scripts, .desktops, etc.

Thanks!

Regarding autosave.

It seems to ask you whether you want to save on every reboot. I don't know if it turns off the periodic save or if setting the puppy event manager field to 0 is what did that.

Code: Select all

chown -R spot .purple

Not matter what I try chown does not change the ownership of any of the files/directories on
/mnt/home.

I guess to do what I want, I'll have to track down every application that runs as spot and change the parameters to run as root.

Lots of work....is there a list?
