taking screencaps in VLC doesnt seem to be working anymore for me. It tries to write the file but it's unreadable by any image viewer/editor.
Anyone else have this problem?

It worked in 601 just fine.

If it displays Mariner 31702 Linux 3.8.7 at the top of the gkrellm column does that mean I am necessarily running the Marine gersion of LH64-602b or does that appear even in the non-Mariner version?

I seem to recall that it says Mariner somewhere else even in the non-Mariner version.

Just wondering as I am about to set up a really tiny USB stick as I never solved the Frugal install problem and this USB stick is almost invisible.

I believe all of the LHP hostnames are Mariner.

#5?

Maybe my host had a momentary outage?

Or is it still failing?

Could be my ancient HTML.

BTW: Everything on my sites look like ancient HTML ... because it is. Our 18yr old son has just started college for IT & has been promising for most of a year to practice his new css and html 5 skills on it - so far nothing - so I'll probably have to drag myself into the 21st century and rebuilt it all. Sigh.

I had some problems getting LH64-602b to load on this eccentric HP Pavilion g7 laptop so I don't recall which I ended up loading from the USB stick - I think I have a partial failed Frugal install on the HDD but actually have to boot from the stick).

Is there something in one of the sysinfo reports that tells if one has the plain vanilla or mariner version?

Is there a way to cause gkrellm to display that output?

The only difference in the Mariner and Regular ISO, is just extra SFS files on the ISO. The Core LHP602.sfs file is exactly the same.

As for GkrellM, you can turn off the hostname display if you want. Open the Config Menu by the F1 key.

There was an extra space in the url which caused the entire post to not show up. I merely removed the extra space.

OK, cool.

I don't want to turn it off - but it would be cool to figure out how to edit it for source, etc. - like the windows which have proved really handy.

Just change your hostname and it'll say anything you want. :P

@eDoc, here another location where you can set/change systemwide hostname. You'll recognize it as soon as you see it: Menu>Setup>Setup LIghthouse>Personalized Settings

Your router and other LAN PCs (esp. Windows/Macs) ID your LIghthouse PC(s), usually, by its hostname. You are NOT required to keep the initially setup hostname. In fact, as a good practice, you may want to choose a name that makes it easy to ID the particular PC you are using. For example "Moms", "Dads", "LivingRoom", "TV", "Radio", "Streaming", just to give some examples of the kinds of names used. Your LIghthouse system takes the responsibility to register itself in the LAN so other can register and find it.

Hope this helps in understanding

You can also do it at the command line by typing:

Code: Select all

hostname TYPE-NAME-HERE

Thanks ... but in both cases such a change would only create a passive naming ... I was hoping for something more active.

The "Mariner31702" line is presumably read from a text file somewhere.

The "Linux 3.8.7" doesn't show up in the Menu-Setup-LighthouseSetup pop-up but presumably is read from a text file somewhere.

If "Mariner31702" is assigned to both the base and expanded-SFS version of LH64 it doesn't answer the ID question well.

Does "Linux 3.8.7" come from a "sysinfo" text file - as a true and current assessment - or from a static text file somewhere that may or may not be current?

I guess what I'm getting at is if one might specify an actively-updated source from which those two lines on top of the gkrellm vertically stacked windows draw their input?

It's a small thing - hardly worth much time or effort on anyone's part.

BTW: Why does gkrellm default to the bottom left when it's always in the way there? I moved it to the right - relocated the Lock & Trash icons to the upper left - then added more link windows to gkrellm (and enlarged them).

I've never looked at the source of GkrellM, but I don't think its reading from a text file. I believe its just resolving that from the system the same way that sysinfo does, by using the built in linux tools. Ie. Like running 'cat /proc/version' from the command line for the kernel info. That's what the Linux 3.8.7 line is, it's the kernel version. Which is not something that gets updated except for major version changes. (LHP515 vs LHP601) The hostname is 'read/resolved' when GkrellM starts, and not again after. Its not something the program is checking for changes, manly because one usually does not go around changing their hostname regularly.

As for changing the hostname permanently, just google for changing the hostname permanently on slackware 14. If there's a special way I don't remember it off the top of my head.

You can turn both of those lines in grkellm off. You can also have it remember its position at shutdown. You need to take some time looking around in the configuration menu. Positioning and behavior is all in there.

It works in version 2.0.8, I compiled that today but I didn't make pets etc.

xcompmgr and cairo-dock

#287 Post by Senza Vega »

Hello,

sorry for this "very newbie question" :

I tried without success to start with xcompmgr and cairo-dock -o
I did a symlink into /Startup :
don't work,
into /root/Startup :
don't work

tried to write :
xcompmgr -c -C &
into /root/.xinitrc

no success

tried to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
Section "Extensions"
# This enables kcompmgr or xcompmgr (if present)
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

no success too

Somebody could help me please ?
Best regards.

Edit : when I launch xcompmgr and cairo-dock in a console, works fine.

USB Boot Stick

#288 Post by edoc »

I'm trying to create a second USB boot stick using the Menu -> Setup -> Bootflash Install Lighthouse to USB.

The USB stick doesn't work & I think it has something to do with the UEFI mess but I don't recall how I got the first one to work.

Can I just create the same sub-menus on the new one and copy everything missing across from the working one?

Or is it more complicated than that?

The two images on the left are the working USB boot stick, the one on the upper right is the non-working USB boot stick:

auto connect; checking fat partition; UEFI flashdrive

#289 Post by tazoc »

ICPUG wrote:I have a query relating to usage of Lighthouse Puppy. I am actually using the 32-bit version but I suspect the same thing would apply to the 64 bit version and this seems to be the thread that is read!

When I boot Lighthouse on my machine with an ethernet cable attached to an always on modem router it automatically connects to the Internet. I can, of course, disconnect by right clicking the network icon in the tray and selecting disconnect.

Is there a way of starting up in the disconnect state, preferably without connecting first and then automatically disconnecting? Ideally, I would like the network icon to be there so that I can right click and connect when I DO want to go on the internet.

Thanks.
Hello ICPUG,
I did not include the ability to boot without attempting automatic Internet connection. I will study this for the next release and hopefully include a setting that would apply upon reboot--no auto connect. I am focusing on 64-bit Lighthouse, however if you let me know which version of 32-bit Lighthouse Pup you need, I might be able to make a Pet for that purpose, after studying the scripts and tray icon source code.
gcmartin wrote:New issue has arisen on my trusty X2 box. A HDD issue has come up and is shown below.

Below, as you look over the pics enclosed, on my system drive,
  1. the 1st physical partition is now labeled sda (this is OK and understood)
  2. And, after mount and opening GParted, I see a flag on the 1st partition.
  3. Looking at the information of the flag, I am supposed to have a correction option.
  4. Going back to GParted's Menu options, I see tht the correction option does NOT exist for the partition.
  5. Lastly, when I open LH64's Drive mounter, notice that the mounted partition, sda3, does NOT show up.
Question
What data can be provided to assist understanding and identifying why this has occurred?
My concerns are why the error may exist, why GParted doesn't have the "Check" option available for the partition and why the Drive Utility cannot "see" the partition.

DATA does seem to be intact, at this point.
Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer.
The GParted "Check" option is greyed out because the partition is mounted. Choose the 'Unmount' option in GParted, then Check should work. If the partition is not showing up in Drives Manager, try Fatdog Drive Mounter and Pmount in the Filesystem menu. If GParted cannot repair the file system, copy the data over to another good partition, in case it is necessary to reformat sda3 and restore from the backup. I don't know what would cause the unallocated space on the fat32 partition.

I don't think so.

Yes, I plan to update the Bootflash script to detect and point UEFI machines to the 'dd and fix-usb.sh' method from Fatdog64, described in the FAQ at http://www.lhpup.org/help/faqs/uefi-flashdrive.html
If fix-usb.sh fails and you have previously followed the 'dd' instructions precisely, you might need to erase the flash drive with the following command, prior to the 'dd and fix-usb.sh':

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd bs=4k conv=notrunc
where /dev/sdd is your flash drive without a partitiion# (e.g., sdd not sdd3).
NOTE: Do not use the dd command above, unless you are absolutely certain of the drive designation. (Using a dd command on /dev/sda might irrecoverably erase your hard disk!)

Re: Mariner vs. base. There currently is no indicator of a Mariner installation, apart from the presence of the extra SFS. You can determine which you have by copying over the script click-to-verify-mariner from the ISO into the same directory where your L64save file is located and click on the script. If the initrd.xz verifies OK, then it is Mariner, otherwise it is base, (or possibly changed if you had extracted and edited the initrd.) The only difference between the two ISOs is the presence of the extra SFS, and the contents of /etc/rc.d/BOOTCONFIG file inside the initrd, used to en-queue the SFS included with Mariner.
