Linux Audio - Sample / Mixing / Layering?

Im wondering if there is any intuitive easy to use Linux software similar to this http://twistedtools.com/shop/reaktor/s-layer/ and here is something similar but an online version http://www.ambient-mixer.com/ if you click on one of the pictures it brings up a mixer you can play with - however if i recall this site requires you to pay for downloads.
What i would like to do is take a bunch of already recorded audio files (bird songs, streams , nature that kind of stuff) and mix / layer / loop and generally play about with them to to create some kind of soundscape effect.

I do use Audacity it has some of the features i need but overall i find it more of an audio editor and the effects are not real time.

Tried LMMS i find it pretty complicated to use and as far as i can tell it doesn't support the loading of .mp3 files? i could convert everything to LMMS supported format but i would rather not have to.

So is there anything else out there in the Linux Audio world that will do this?

thanks.

Hi, stu91,

there is:

Ardour (Audio - newer Versions are Audio & MIDI)
Muse (Audio & MIDI)
QTractor (Audio & MIDI)
Rosegarden (Audio & MIDI)
Sooperlooper (Audio Realtime Loop Sampler)

LazY Puppy has all of them and they might run and work in a standard Lucid - probably...

the most lightweight alternative is meterec, if you can get it to work: meterec ... also ecasound

(google for examples/usage, they are terminal/cli programs)

Yes, I do.

Path says 201 but it's all 202

The newest version of mhwaveedit allows a mono soundfile on your
hard drive to be mixed to a already opened channel.

This could allow some sophisticated editing.

One track could be birds and the other a voice over.

Just want to say thanks to every one for their suggestions - i tried several of the recommended applications now - im sure these are great application in their own right and you can do/make wonderful things with them but on the whole i find them far to complex and complicated for my needs - im not musically inclined so routing, jack, midis, beats, instruments, chains and all that kind of stuff just goes way over my head - maybe what i'm looking for (basically Audacity with real time effects) just isn't available on linux as it seems to leep from Audacity to full fledged Audio workstations with nothing inbetween :(

http://www.eca.cx/ecasound/Documentatio ... multitrack - I know you're fine with the command line, so here's a quick snippet on how to multi-track edit with ecasound.. It's not as hard as it looks.. (although admittedly I never made anything of any use with it) ...

Hi.

By having a first short read in this manual of ecasound it seems to be a useful audio tool - shouldn't it be worth to give it a try to build a small but useful EcaSound-GUI?

Or is there already a GUI available?

thanks sc0ttman,
i needed to add mpg123 in puppy exprimo to get .mp3 support - this application is actually pretty good using playat for delaying the start of different layers, havent ventured into the effects set up yet
ecasound + mhwaveedit could make a promising lightweight alternative to Audacity for puppy.

This may not fit your requirements totally, and the maker is going to have another attempt at Linux, (testbed wine 1.5.14) it doesn't do mp3s, so you would have to convert to aiff, wav, but it is very easy to set up a mix and it is all realtime.

I have been trying it out in Puppy and it is brilliant.
It uses Juce library whatever the heck that is, but me likey that Juce thing a lot! Port for Linux available...http://rawmaterialsoftware.com/juce.php

I set up a quick 4 track mix with a view to a remix, very point and click, and then shoved a delay plugin on one track. And added a built in Volume Level "widget for each file player.
Synchronised them so they start together and hit go. Tried to crash it, but no, it is hanging in there beautifully, and these are big wavs in ram.
Saved the setup and closed, opened it up again and, bam it was there again.
I like the way you can just cable in eqs reverbs delays, filters and other fx so easily.
Not sure about exporting your final landscape mix, but maybe you could hang an external recorder off the output?
I guess if I was creating an ambient mix of naturally sourced sounds and wanted a quick mix, I might give this a go.

Hi.

Did not see your Information about the WIne SFS.

If I want to run Windows Music Software, I'll boot up Windows and use Cubase VST.

However, thanks for the link.

Well that's your perogative R-S-H, but it is an example of coding (imo) that is well executed in both form, function and design, design, design.

I don't think things will change unless a programmer writes down what they need something to do, build it, and then find a graphic designer partner to put the front end look on it and make some suggestions.
Something that is not often found in Linux apps. Hydrogen and Ardour being the exceptions.

I have no idea why Audacity cannot do realtime fx inserts or why that clunky loop button doesn't stay on when you hit it, but it's been like that for millennia.

Hi Smithy.

It's not a part of a post of mine that you have been quoting here. It is a part of a post by stu91. Just want to let you know.

Hi all,
Was a good question that I had never asked myself - all my audio processing has been either compromised (audacity) or has sunk me into a black hole of lost time (ardour). I never thought to look for software that could insert realtime fx into a single stream.. until now!
http://www.wavosaur.com/
Seems to work perfectly in Wine

Cheers
