A translator's best friend

Perhaps all you translator-colleagues know about this one..If not, I cannot but share this beautiful project:
Open-tran
It really is a helpful tool, showing what other translators have come up with as translation of same word(s) and how common the translation is in the open source community.

Why Open-Tran.eu?
Proprietary software vendors may (if they can afford it) use CAT or TM software in order to ensure the consistency of their applications' terminology. Unfortunately, there are many different software vendors who are not willing to share their knowledge (which includes translation memory databases) with the others.
And this is where the open source software could prove to be better than the proprietary. It could, but is not. Although everybody has full access to the translations of many open source programs, this opportunity is hardly ever used. The knowledge of hundreds (if not thousands) of people translating applications into their native languages is not centralized and thus hardly available to the others. This is the reason why the translations of even the most popular programs are not consistent with each other, which discourages people from using them.
I'd like the Open-Tran.eu service to fill this gap and to provide the translators with a useful tool, which may improve the quality of their translations and increase the consistency of terminology in the open source software.
Give it a try, many many languages included!

Thank you, I have tried it
One word I have always been too lazy to look up: legacy
Now I have found it is mostly superfluous in use like in
Legacy grub config.....
grub is a good old name
grub2 and grub4dos are others
Legacy grub is ....superfluous
I have simply cut it off in my translations IIRC.
The opposite of lecacy is something like new
The world is full of Newtowns, Neustadts, Neufvilles, novgorods.....

Add GoldenDict to the list and you have a complete, expandable dictionary/thesaurus/encyclopaedia central:

Much appreciated you gave us that good suggestion
typical of my noobness I failed to translate from English to Swedish
it always gives the English word back as the best translation so
I must do something obviously wrong. No hurry you guys suggest things
I have no difficult text at the moment to translate
so maybe send a PM to not derail this thread.
or test translating the word derail from English to Swedish

just my opinion, to get the best translation
To translate to french, take a dictionnary from France (larousse)
translations FR to EN or Vice-versa will be the more accurate.
Idem for hungarian, or Polski, russian..
To Translate to english, there are thousands of sources.
It's nice people search dictionnaries to speak in the language of people receiving their visit..

That is what we do when writing in the Puppy forum. However is dictionnary is not enough, unfortunately.
Is my english correct ?
Hungarian are translating their Puppies to English, hard job, but sure it more difficult for australian to translate to hungarian (magyar).

Sorry for this late reply Pelo.
Yes, Open-Tran is no more.
Little did I know this was the work of one man, who dedicated all his free time to this project for years. It surely looked like a well-oiled teamwork...Given the vastness of this project, I totally understand he had to give up in the end.
What made Open-Tran so special was the fact it was all about (open-source) software translation, for which the "classic" dictionaries aren't very useful most of the time. And the built-in database of what other translators did for the same words/expressions was unique.
A team should continue Open-Tran.....
