Thank you for including Legacy GRUB Config 2013.

There is a newer version of PeasyPrint (2.3) here.

Please read the discussion here about the phantom mounting of sda1. This was quite disconcerting.

Please refer to my post in the Precise 5.5 topic.

Some (most?) packages in the Ubuntu repos have something like this in their *.desktop files:

Code: Select all

...
Categories=X-(category)-Sub
...
They aren't appearing in the JWM menu, after neither installation nor running fixmenus and restarting JWM. In the /etc/xdg/menus/puppy-*.menu files, the X-(category)-Sub categories aren't listed, only X-(category), so the -Sub category should be added (preferably right after the X-(category)) in each puppy-*.menu file.

Known affected packages are fceux, trimage and tvtime.

This is a minor bug, but it could be very confusing for newcomers.

I too ran into this with Filezilla X-Internet-Sub; But I also downloaded bibletime and vlc witch both went into the menu and worked.

everything else is working on a Dell D430

Cheers

D/l finally arrived from ibiblio. There were some issues with video on a 754 nV board with Radeon 7000 onboard chip. Initial res. was incorrect and couldn't be reset from CLI. Rebooted with nox and got correct settings via manual input, but results were less than expected. 'Expected' was based on XP2800+ fitted with discrete Radeon 7000 card. This machine selected correct res., was brighter and faster without any intervention. Both machines shared the same monitor - odd.
Otherwise, another great release with sound, connection and FlashPlayer OOTB. This project definitely proving more successful that Rarin'. Thanks.

Re the "phantom mounting", I have responded to that in my blog:

http://bkhome.org/blog2/?viewDetailed=00226

I am going to rewrite the code so that pupdesk.flg gets created and removed in the initrd, so user's won't see any "phantom mounting".

It's not really a bug. In all cases where "-Sub" is shown, you leave it off.

Precise-5.5.93

Did an upgrade to 5.5.92... it went well but it took two reboots for Frisbee to finally kick in from the 5.5.92 original setup. That appears to be working very well so far (about 8-hours now) plus several reboots with 100% survival rate.

So far everything else that came with 5.5.93 plus all my installs are doing great!

Your effort on 5.5.93 really shows!

sfs's installed that work nice:
Google Earth-6.0.3.2197-luki.sfs
gimp-2.8.2-1precise.sfs

Still temporarily enjoying dialup internet for a few more days until my replacement equipment arrives so I actually used the delta file for a change.Generally just go ahead and download the new full iso but since my high-speed is down I appreciated the smaller download.

Frugal install on the Athlon XP box.....everything looking good except for the dreaded file being placed on sda1. :)

The oder of the additional SFS loading

Posted: Mon 13 May 2013, 10:42

A long term woof issue:
The bootManager says 'top entry will be on top Unionfs layer', but it is not true.

Japanese editions have different code for the additional SFS'es to be loaded in the order listed on the EXTRASFSLIST.
Here is the patch:

Code: Select all

# diff init-130216 init-550JP
139a140
> #27feb11 shinobar: extra sfs in the order of EXTRASFSLIST
1530,1537c1531,1537

< while read ONEEXTRA
< do
< ONEBASE="`basename $ONEEXTRA`"
< exPATTERN="^z|^pup_" #w478
<     [ "`echo "$ONEBASE" | grep -E "$exPATTERN"`" != "" ] && continue
<     [ "`grep "$ONEBASE" /tmp/EXTRASFSS`" != "" ] && continue #100711 avoid loading duplicates.
<     [ "`echo "$EXTRASFSLIST" | grep "$ONEBASE"`" != "" ] && echo "${ONEEXTRA}" >> /tmp/EXTRASFSS

use a boot menu instead of boot prompt

Posted: Mon 13 May 2013, 21:32
by ASRI éducation
Sorry, this response should be sent to the blog of BK, but I do not have an account to communicate.
So let me highlight a proposal jamesbond.
My suggestion is either:

a) use a boot menu instead of boot prompt, where one of the menu entry is "safeboot" or something like that which will start puppy with the appropriate boot parameters, or

b) if still using boot prompt, then have another label entry (say "safeboot") which will boot with the appropriate boot parameters, instead of asking the user to type "puppy pfix=blahblahblah".
I know that many users appreciate the ease and efficiency of boot menu.
In addition, for many novice users, it avoids errors beginners.
Example: if I write 'pupy pfix=ram' (instead of 'puppy pfix=ram'), the prompt is telling me no error and start detecting the backup.
The menu avoids these errors and allow many options.
It's simple to customize (if it is integrated into the iso).

An example => How to have a graphical GRUB (CatDude)

Yeah if only other people who develop would use the Delta files more and more.....

Intel Audio Chip/alsa/retrovol combination fails

Posted: Mon 13 May 2013, 23:52
by tlchost
Every Precise I'v tried exhibits the same behavior. Either the kernel, Alsa or Retrovol do not recginize my Intel audio chip

Processor : 8x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
snd_hda_intel : Intel HDA driver
snd_hda_codec : HDA codec core
snd_hwdep : Hardware dependent layer
snd_pcm_oss : PCM OSS emulation for ALSA.
snd_mixer_oss : Mixer OSS emulation for ALSA.
snd_pcm : Midlevel PCM code for ALSA.
snd_seq_dummy : ALSA sequencer MIDI-through client
snd_seq_oss : OSS-compatible sequencer module
snd_seq_midi : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture sequencer MIDI synth.
snd_seq_midi_event : MIDI byte <-> sequencer event coder
snd_rawmidi : Midlevel RawMidi code for ALSA.
snd_seq : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture sequencer.
snd_seq_device : ALSA sequencer device management
snd_timer : ALSA timer interface
shpchp : Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver
snd : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture driver for soundcards.
soundcore : Core sound module

PCI bridge : Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev c4) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])
PCI bridge : Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 5 (rev c4) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])

I've tried every option that alsa anmd retrovol offer for configuration.

What's really interesting is that Raring and Upup recognize the sound ship, the speaker icon is not muted as it is in Precise.

It seems that the "stock" precise distributions have the problem, while non-stock ones do not.

I'd rslly appreciate some help with this.

thanks

Thom

Hello BarryK,

Please see my post here about the LaGaBluenight desktop icons:-

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=350

I hope you will give serious consideration to this as the appearance of the default desktops of Wary, Racy and Precise make up a very important part of the "shopfront" of Puppy.

Barry, Pemasu suggested that I call to your attention a video driver
selection issue that I first noticed on his Wheezy 3.5.2.6 and
3.5.2.7. After I select the ATI Radeon driver and it reboots, it
then enters X and exits requiring me to type xwin to get a GUI.

I tried your Precise 5.5.92 and it also balked and very strangely
offered a selection of video drivers that included wrong ones such as
Intel as well as the correct Radeon. However, after I chose
Radeon it subsequently started up normally.

A fresh frugal of your 5.5.93 went straight to the GUI with the
proper driver and 1280 X1024 screen ok (My only complaint
about 5593 so far is the old 1.03 version of gnome mplayer that
has audio-video sync problems.)

The nouveau sometimes success and sometime fails.
The vesa works.
Tried vesa with the xorgwizard-cli and it's OK. But it requires reboot.

After some tests, I found reboot actually does not need in my case.
I would like the reboot to be optional.

Code: Select all

# diff xorgwizard-cli xorgwizard-cli-shinobar

wifi starts only after: network-wizard =>establish wifi with wl (shows connection but no networking) => rebooting(making savefile) => reestablishing network through Frisbee;
the same thing on previous "precises"/AOA722/HP pavilion dv6/
hope will be helpful to someone( on AOA722 established wifi with b43).
