I guess this is something useful for Puppi (the Raspberry Pi version of puppy) too. The raspberry pi looks like an excellent addon to any router. Just add RetroShare and BitTorrent Sync and be your own cloud!

bittorrentsync should just work if you follow the instructions.

1. download it, unzip it, then left click on it to start. (this starts the daemon which you can't see)
2. you then need to access it through it's webui for linux e.g. 192.168.1.137:8888/gui into the address bar in your browser

For people still reading this thread: the BT sync team has announced that they are working on a version which follows symlinks. I hope that will become reality soon. Combine that with the one way sync feature (already built in) and this app becomes a great addition to email programs.

... if you use the ip adress which shows up when you look it up at whatismyip.com or similar it does not work.

I am trying to add BtSync to Squeezed Arm Puppy Alpha 4 so I can use my raspberry pi & puppy as my personal cloud. Unfortunately it appears that version 1 1 82 of BtSync does not want to be executed (?) However, it should be possible to use btsync on ARM devices.

Am I doing something wrong?

Yes I am doing the most obvious thing wrong: not using the ARM version of btsync. Which is here:

Not quite.
BT sync needs both machines to be on at the same time. This means that while it is very useful there are cases where it is not as useful as Dropbox,Skydrive, etc.

True. One option to do just that is to have a raspiberry pi device at home and use that as always-on node (power consumption is just 3.5 watts or so):
