Does Puppy have a tool to monitor audio level? (Solved)

#1 Post by rmcellig »

I usually use The Pulse Audio Volume Control app to monitor incoming audio when I am recording my radio show so that I know that audio is actually coming in. Can I do something similar with Puppy Linux? Something like VU meters or a bar display?

My radio is connected to the input of my computer.

Menu -> Multimedia -> mhWaveEdit has VU meters when in its recording mode. I've used it to record audio books from Line in. For its size it's a surprisingly powerful program for recording and editing audio files, so it will take some getting used to.

I use arecord from the command line to do scheduled recordings. Works great. I just need something that will show me that there is audio coming I whether I am recording or not. This tells me that line in is working as it should.

As I said, mhWaveEdit has VU meters, which will do what you said you want.

Thanks Flash but do I have to be recording with mhwaveedit for the vu meters to work or can mhwaveedit monitor the sound without having to be in recording mode?

You can record with arecord while monitoring the input levels with mhWaveEdit's VU meters? I didn't know that. :)

By the way, I found that a considerable amount of clipping isn't noticeable to my ears, which allows me to increase the overall level of the recording. I'm not familiar with arecord. Does it allow you to control the record level from the command line?

I'm not sure if you can do that. I'll have to check out the MAN page.
