milkdrop2 plugin for foobar

#1 Post by 666philb »

edited to add 'cabextract.pet' needed to install dxd3d in wine

MilkDrop is an open source, hardware-accelerated music visualization plugin for Winamp, which was originally developed by Ryan Geiss. It uses DirectX and intelligent beat detection to render iterated images which blend seamlessly. MilkDrop uses a complex system of interpolation to transition between presets gradually through time, creating a constantly changing visual experience. There's a video of milkdrop running on my puppy here, couldn't go fullscreen as gtkrecord my desktop didn't like it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32_Na_31njU

Foobar is available in the lupu520 PPM and needs Wine installed to run, it can also be downloaded here http://www.foobar2000.org/download (note, if the latest version doesn't work you can try an older one from http://www.filehippo.com/download_foobar2000/

Some users may not know that foobar can run winamps 'milkdrop' using a plugin called 'Shpeck'. So i've created a pet that installs shpeck in foobar, and milkdrop2 on your wine c drive.

foomilkdrop:http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... lkdrop.pet

You also need to install d3dx9 in winetricks but will need first to have cabextract installed to do that, it can be found in the ppm or attached at the bottom of this post, ..Once installed open a console and type

Code: Select all

winetricks d3dx9
You will also need

Code: Select all

winetricks vcrun2008
You will need to point shpeck at the winamp folder on your c drive,so in foobar goto 'file/preferences/shpeck' and at the top of the screen press the directory button and navigate to 'mycomputer/(c)/programfiles/winamp' and press ok. Milkdrop should now show as an option., Start shpeck from the view menu in foobar. there's a few minor bugs such as milkdrop not fitting in it window properly, but resizing the window fixes this. Also when going full screen, the screen will be blank, but just click again to start milkdrop.

Some basic instructions.... with window focused press space for next visual, double click to go full screen. Press F1 for more options.

enjoy

I am trying it now in lupu 525. I can not get it to work because Foobar (the version for lucid, i.e. 1.0.3) refuses to accept a winamp located in a folder with a dot in it, like .wine

what to do now ?!?

OTOH I recall that milkdrop also should work in Amarok. There was a group working on a special Linux milkdrop with the name Project M. I never got that working in puppy either but if that can be fixed then Milkdrop cou;d be used in linux without installing the wine version of directx (which is over 100MB!)

hi Dromeno

In foobar preferences/visualisations/shpeck top right press the button where is says winamp directory.. then navigate to it going through the windows path ie.... My computer/ (C) / program files / winamp................. as opposed to puppy's path /root/.wine etc

There is a project m media player that works in lucid. If you enable the ubuntu repos in the PPM it's in the ubuntu lucid universe section. called Qmmp .Be sure to choose the examine dependencies option if you want to try it.
