For what it's worth again, the only time SeaMonkey crashed here was the very first time it was launched.....afterward no problem. Running live Seamonkey crashed at first launch...... no problem the rest of the time. On the frugal install same thing...... crashed on very first launch but no problem since.

However.....Raring locks up on my semi-new Nvidia graphics.Boots to a correct desktop but shortly freezes with a garbled display and no keyboard input.

Basically it is easy here. I dont offer official Puppy, so I can decide what I put to the build. But in this case I am somewhat willing to listen the opinions.

Then why not release a puppy with no browser at all?
PPM works reasonably well, the end-user himself can make a choice and install his favorite browser. To each his own.

Panic is over. Laughing

Added nouveau.noaccel=1 to the kernel line and Raring 3.8.7 is working fine. SeaMonkey did not crash either. Smile

So...with old comp which does not accept 11 version, downgrade to use 10 version. Oh....how I do that ?....Easy....just click: Menu > Internet > GetFlash Install Flashplayer and choose Flashplayer10. And download that older version which downgrades the installed Flashplayer11 and older comp can use flashplayer again.

I may be mis-remembering, but Get Flash in Slacko quotes the version number of the currently installed Flash Player but Get Flash in Upup Raring (and Wary) doesn't. Will check tomorrow.

Been testing Upup Raring on my Pentium D, looking quite good so far. More tomorrow.

Raring 387 booted up properly on my intel graphics desktop and my
Nvidia graphics desktop (using nouveau driver)

_____________________________________________

I used 'nox' option and typed 'xorgwizard-cli' in console.

Everything went smoothly albeit I was confused about the term 'KMS'
which is used with the 'intel' driver

PostPosted: Mon 29 Apr 2013, 18:34    Post subject: strange behaviour

Here's some odd behaviour that is reproducible in frugal install
with no pupsave file.

1) Bootup with pfix=nox option

2) In the console launch 'xorwizard-cli'

3) There is a choice of drivers ---> I chose 'Intel driver, needs KMS (requires reboot)

4) Click ok and you will see the 'Save to file' screen

5) Press ctrl-alt-F2 or ctrl-alt-F3 which gets you back to console

6) Now login as root user and launch 'xorgwizard-cli' again.

7) Next type 'xwin' and you get to desktop.
(because xorg.conf has been previously created in step3)

The point I am making is that I chose (in step 3) to reboot,
but I didn't need to reboot.

Last note: After about 3 minutes the machine goes black screen and I
have to reboot. I believe this is because of automatic rebooting
when a pupsave file is created (even though I didn't create
a pupsave file.) This is a feature that Barry Kauler put in puppy
recently.

There is somewhat similar behaviour on my nvidia
graphics card machine.

Edit: If I press ctrl-alt-F2 when I get a message saying I should reboot
(after step 3) then I can type 'xwin and get a stable desktop

ETP. I have to wait aufs 3.9 version. It probably takes 2 weeks to one month before it is available. As much as I would like to compile it right away.

The aufs very important?wait 3.9 version

Ready to upgrade to 3.9 after long-term use, good little upgrade.
Before also with pemasu system used now SSD, so wanted to upgrade, just upgrade to 3.87, and saw Replies says it is prepared to 3.9

Then why not release a puppy with no browser at all?

BK's original choice of SM browser was well-intentioned. After that he became a bit stubborn and too close to his own project to spot what was happening in the Mozzie camp, viz excessive bloat and unfixed/unfixable issues. There never was any real advantage for Puppy users in having the SM suite and BK initially offered Sylpheed, anyway. Thunderbird started out bloated and broken - once the old Qualcomm EUDORA OSE-1 turned up in the Mozilla offerings, it became a no-brainer, at least for Americans, as an email client: no-one has come close to writing anything as good. Opera was a good second option but has/had a couple of intractable problems for some folks, like difficulty of direct printing (save text to WP), appalling in-built emailer (don't use it), etc. All the while Chromium was creeping up on the scene, albeit a proprietary offering with added suspicions about the ethics and intentions of large capitalist corporations. The sad fact is that the Stalman mantra is just for the birds. If all it takes to use non-free kit is to sign a release that cannot be enforced, so be it. There is one exception of course - never sign the M$ EULA!
No browser? Well, not quite - the PPM or Dillo or NewLinks will enable punters to select their own poison and subsequently request fixes herein...

Hi don570,

I have just done a clean install of 3.8.7 and so have no pets installed.
Downloaded youtube mp4 video opens and plays fine for me in GNOME mplayer.

Think this is because Upup Raring does not have the patched glib like other puppies like Slacko and Upup Precise....

see (I think) http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=81672&start=299

Linus Torvalds has pulled the big red lever marked Version 3.9, unleashing the latest Linux kernel onto the world and at the same time bringing some good news for Chromebook tinkerers. The update builds on the Chromebook Pixel tweak we saw back in February by adding support for components in "Chrome laptops sold by many companies" -- with the changelog specifically mentioning the x86-powered Samsung Series 5, Acer C7, HP Pavilion 14 as well as support for the Pixel's touchscreen, all of which should make it easier to run your preferred distro in place of Chrome OS on those machines. Other general improvements include better support for Intel power-saving features, the ability to use an SSD as a hard drive cache as well as KVM visualization for users with ARM-powered gear. Just make sure there's no NVIDIA hardware inside any of those boxes -- you know it makes Linus cranky.

3.9 Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
