Having trouble to get software volume to work in puppy.
The issue is being talked about here. could be relevant for usb audio devices.

Can't control the sound volume
This is what Proc/asound/usb/usb mixer says:

Should there be a pcm slider for capure?(not clock capture)
I can't be sure, but it sounds like voip is "capturing" the sound of the clock.

Is it possible ALSA can't control the sound level of your device. That is the case with Presonus Audiobox USB.
So like you say sound volume has to be controlled by software (if possible) or on the box?
Not ideal, but in the case on Presonus they don't officially support linux (even though they are planning products with linux embedded).
Another option is to install pulse audio, but that will potentially bugger up the Jack sound server whihc you may be using.
