Remastered standard Slacko 5.7 -> Slacko-5.7-Office-NON-PAE

md5sum : a3fe26ed9303b47187f32b5f88fffcb0

Download : http://tinyurl.com/pfe4mok

Standard Slacko 5.7 with :

Support for Belkin F5d6050 wireless usb added in
OpenOffice replacing abiword and gnumeric
OpenOffice Draw replacing inchscape
evince replacing epdfview
VirtualBox
PupSaveHotBackup (live run backup of savefile)
Thunar (file manager) added in alonside ROX-Filer
Skype
GIMP (images)
mplayer fixed so full screens
xvidcap (video capture of desktop)
Audacity (sound editing tutuorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-lmAYIbeY8)
OpenShot (video editing - tutorial http://youtu.be/isphHbbBsvc)
Avidmux (simpler/smaller video editor)

Whopping 540MB, so more for later 'old' PC's (with perhaps 1GB or more RAM). Download, burn to CD/DVD, reboot from CD/DVD and a viable alternative to Windows XP IMO with less of a steep learning curve to transition to puppy linux (OpenOffice is more like Windows Office than is Libre Office).

Slacko 5.7 Office

#5 Post by Dpup »

Thanks rufwoof, Installed Slacko 5.7 Office on old HP Laptop along with pets for small USB powered Canon LiDE 110 scanner, and battery operated Canon IP100 color inkjet. WiFi with pocket Hotspot.

All battery operated package fits in original laptop bag. Can visit with grandkids across the country on Skype while on the road, surf internet, work email, documents, scanning, printing, video and photo editing etc... and much much more.. everything I normally used on laptop with Windows.

And it took me less than 10 minutes to get it all running on a bootable USB flash drive.

Keep up the great work !!!

Only just noticed this version - do you have a current download link for it? And does the Skype part of it still work?
cheers.

One question. How you compiled evinces sucessfully?

On Slacko 5.7 i got serious issues building some dependencies (i.e. Tesseract and poppler)

I've moved on, or rather somewhat backwards.

The latest incarnation is formed from Micko's Slacko 5.3.3t (thin), but with Slacko 5.7 kernel dropped in (so supports later hardware).

Skype 4.3
Libre 4.2.3 with UK dictionary
Openshot for editing videos
inkscape - full version which is used by Openshot as part of editing animated titles
blender - again used by Openshot for creating 3D titles
xvidcap - for capturing a video of desktop
Audacity - sound editor
PXE server to dish up net booting to other PC's on the same LAN
Normal Puppy menu relegated to being accessed via right click on the desktop
Personal menu replacing the taskbar menu with quick access to configuration files as part of that menu (which can also be activated by middle mouse button clicking no the desktop).
Remasters to include puppy sfs inside initrd
Uses LZO compression of puppy (and large initrd) - which from tests proved to be the fastest overall choice (less compression, but decompresses much quicker)
Firefox portable so can be set to update to the latest version, with Youtube viewing using HTML5 (provided you set NoScript to allow YouTube). Flash 10 for sites that don't yet support HTML5 (BBC).
HDD spin down added to shutdown, so heads park (less prone to corruption)
etc etc.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4MbXu ... sp=sharing 550MB

Intended to be used as a Frugal Pup Mode 5, ram booted, no save file. For persistence the core puppy is lightweight - so infrequently changed and remaster when you want to make a change to that core. For Libre configuration, flash, Qt and Skype their respective config files/directories are sym linked to outside of Puppy. Firefox portable ensures bookmarks etc are preserved outsde of puppy.

The above file should be extracted (drag/drop on the desktop ZIP icon) to where you keep your frugal boot initrd, vmlinuz and free disk space needs to be >1.2GB., Once extracted point grub4dos (edit menu.lst) at those files. I'd suggest a grub4dos entry something like :

Code: Select all

title Puppy 533t-310-PM5
root (hd0,2)
kernel /Puppy_533t-310-PM5/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd pfix=ram ramdisk_size=300000 nouveau.modeset=0 nouveau.noaccel=1 radeon.modeset=0 i915.modeset=0
initrd /Puppy_533t-310-PM5/initrd.lzo
Note that the kernel line wraps in the above and should be all on one line - like this :

title Puppy 533t-310-PM5
root (hd0,2)
kernel /Puppy_533t-310-PM5/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd pfix=ram ramdisk_size=300000 nouveau.modeset=0 nouveau.noaccel=1 radeon.modeset=0 i915.modeset=0
initrd /Puppy_533t-310-PM5/initrd.lzo

and the root line needs to be changed to whichever disk and partition you use (remembering that they number from zero i.e.mine points to the first disk, 3rd partition (/mnt/sda3 in my case so = root (hd0,2)).

On first booting I suggest you opt for VESA, that invokes Mesa - which I find works across a wide range of hardware whilst providing reasonable graphic performance

You should also change the content of /root/INITRD_LOCATION file content to change the

/mnt/sda3/Puppy_533t-310-PM5

to point the sda3 directory wherever the vmlinuz and initrd.lzo files are stored, perhaps /mnt/sda2/Puppy_533t-310-PM5 for instance if you've unpacked to /mnt/sda2.

After that change, remaster i.e. Menu, Config, Remaster. That will typically take around a minute to run through that and will automatically replace the initrd.lzo with the later version (older version saved as initrd.lzo, prev), so after the DONE message appears then reboot.

Generally when remastering its best to do so after a clean reboot, not loading any sfs's - just making the desired changes and then remastering immediately. Keep historical copies of initrd.lzo so you can roll back if necessary. If a boot fails what I tend to do is press the e (for edit) at the grub menu, use the arrow keys to move to the initrd line and e again to edit that, change the initrd.lzo file to initrd.lzo, prev and then enter to save that change and b to boot.

Bit of a weird hybrid - Slacko 5.3.3 is Slackware 13 based whilst the 3.10 kernel dropped in using Slack 5.7 as the source is Slackware 14 based, so some experimenting as to what may or may not run will be required. When testing just boot to the desktop, try things ou and if it crashes - reboot and you're back to normal working again. With the later kernel, added firmware and using VESA I hope it will boot straight out of the box for most. You may/will have to set up networking (click the network tray icon) and sound (menu, config, sound set up and just click on the defaults usually does tne trick).

When up and running for PXE you fire up the server (menu, PXE) click Normal and that starts the server (and turns the firewall off). On a windows PC on the same network you'll need to set that to have secure boot set off and then when first switched on press the F12 key (or <esc>) repeatedly until it starts net boot (or pops up a menu that includes a net boot option). Most network cards support PXE booting but some onboard networks don't (mileage varies).

Use at your own risk, as I said its a somewhat weird one - but one that I use for everyday working. I'm no programmer, but as puppy is more or less a bunch of markup languages (JWM, Rox), and mostly scripts (where I scan around for examples in order to create my own scripts), you don't have to be a pro-programmer - and end users such as myself can have a go. I've tweaked a lot and likely there are things that I don't use myself that may be broken (PPM for instance).

EDIT : I've just PXE booted a Windows box so that has a puppy desktop and the HDD's remained untouched (unmounted). As that Windows machine doesn't have a initrd.lzo and vmlinuz of itself I remastered after changing /root/INITRD_LOCATION to point to just / opting to remaster using ram. 30 seconds or so later I then had a initrd.lzo and vmlinuz in the / directory. Editing /root/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg directory contents to remove the existing sym links for initrd.lzo and vmlinuz to point to that / directory versions, and then starting PXE (via the main menu) and that PXE booted Windows box was then providing a PXE server. I then shutdown the original machine that the Windows box originally PXE booted from and set that original machine to PXE boot ... and booted from the ram based Windows PXE server. Pointless exercise but good to see it working ok. It did black screen and I had to ctrl-alt-backspace to the command prompt and run xorgwizard and pick VESA, set the display resolution and then xwin to get to see the gui desktop.

Thanks ally.

We were however both updating/uploading at the same time as I've edited to include the multimedia stuff. Not that much larger but includes a full working set of Openshot, (full) inkscape, Blender, xvidcap, Audacity.

Before mirroring/amending, hold off for a while as I've a better approach in mind rather than lumping it all into a single file. With the core puppy separated out (relatively small), that can be used to establish a desktop and then the main apps can then be downloaded as a separate file using that desktop.

For instance I've just used one version of the desktop to PXE network boot a Windows PC, and then downloaded the main apps to that Windows PC - all in RAM i.e. neither the PXE boot nor download touched the Windows hard disk.

I kicked off a 3D animated title render in Openshot, with Blender opened in the background - and none of the HDD's are mounted.

It may be a day or two before I get to separating and uploading as I'm currently playing with PXE booting 4 desktops that we have behind the same router and I'm on the hunt for a decent multi-player game for us to mess around with.

Thanks again, you do a great job or mirroring so much stuff that may appreciate.
