Running in Slacko Puppy 55 -- looks nice, I like it ! (I may use this instead of GNOME after all...) Just one problem: most of the icons are showing up as broken images (red 'x' on a dog-eared sheet of paper) which is a bit of an issue.

How can I fix this?

xfce-4.12-slacko.sfs + Slacko 55 + changes to .xinitrc as per this thread.

EDIT: also, background does not work either (plain dark-blue 'wallpaper', Nathan Wallpaper Setter does not work).

You must Change the Icon theme. By default, it uses Hicolor icon theme which is very incomplete.
Download a theme, and extract it in /usr/share/icons/ and switch to it.

Nathan doesn't work since it's designed for Rox. And XFCE uses Thunar.
To change the wallpaper : right click on desktop and, 'desktop settings'. Smile
