Downloaded and installed Precise 5.4.93 (k3.8.0) on my ancient AMD Athlon 2 GB machine with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.

I noted the following problems:

1. report-video lists the driver as "nouveau" although I booted with nouveau.modeset=0. The usual problem of blank menus does not occur and xorg.conf reports "vesa," which is probably correct. glxgears reports 35 fps. Switching the driver to "nv" yields 40 fps. Still much too slow.

2. The proprietary NVIDIA 173.14.35 and 173.14.36 drivers fail to compile with an error message:

ERROR: The kernel header file
'/lib/modules/3.8.0/build/include/linux/version.h' does not exist. The
most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files in
'/lib/modules/3.8.0/build' have not been configured.

The required file is, in fact, missing.

On the other hand, VirtualBox 4.2.4 compiles and runs perfectly.

3. Neither pnethood nor YASSM connect to a machine running Puppy (Slacko, Wary), but do connect to a Windows XP share.

4. Textmaker has the strange spell checking error I reported here:

Precise Puppy version 5.4.93

E732 (Acer) laptop with 2gig ram and an i3 proc.
Manual frugal to an NTFS partition and booting via grub4dos on an SDcard.

Very fast and all the basics work as expected OOTB.
Extremely low resource usage.
Fantastic Puppy which to this very average user seems to be as good as can be reasonably expected.

I installed lxterminal and guvcview from ppm (guvcview works)
I compiled and made pets of several applications.
I installed pemasu's google-chrome-fix-for-deb-install-0.0.1.pet +
google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb, also installed opera_12.14.1738_i386.deb

I was unable to compile the ati propietary driver, it gave an error:
Supported adapter detected.
Check if system has the tools required for installation.
fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers.
/lib/modules/3.8.0/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.
One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system.
Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver.
Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools.
Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system
unstable. Not recommended.

Apart from not being able to install the ati driver every else is
working well so far.

Installed and everything is normal on initial configuration: Athlon II X2, RS880G

I have installed TurionPowerControl. Run from rc.local and it is working correctly.

This problem is specific to very new kernels and Samba-TNG servers. I don't think that there is any solution.

You will need to use a full Samba package in Puppy.

Barry. About google-chrome patch. I forgot that google-chrome needs data and media cache restriction.
I have improved the patch so that it now sets those restrictions to 10 Mb. Otherwise /tmp or savefile will be eaten by accumulated data.

Try this fix:

I had to create similar symlink for 3.7.2 kernel source. It worked.

Barry is correct. Wag-profiles.sh is a code file included by net_setup.sh and should not be run standalone:

Both of those files should not have execute permission. That way, they can be run via "." but not by themselves.

I added that notice to my earlier posting about frisbee. Anyone using frisbee should replace it, to restore some of the text that should display. Also, is anyone else seeing wireless reconnects every 30 seconds. other than with driver wl?

The default colors used by ls were intended for the Linux text console, which has a black background. You could swap urxvt's foreground and background colors by adding this line to your ~/.Xdefaults file:

(You might want to change the font as well, since Nimbus Mono L, the font that is defined in ~/.Xdefaults seems less legible in reverse video. I simply removed it from ~/.Xdefaults, and let urxvt use a default font.)

But if you prefer the current white background, you can simply change the background color that ls uses to list block devices and character devices.

Add this line to your ~/.bashrc file:

Alternatively, you could put it in your /etc/profile.local file or in an appropriate line in your /etc/profile file.

Hi everyone, I found another debdb2pupdb bug. It's in 5.4.3, I have to check yet in the 5.5beta.
Some Ubuntu packages have weird dependencies like "udev(>=", "libx11-6(>>" and so on. The root cause is that in the Ubuntu package databases, in the package dependency data, sometimes the dependent package name and version requirement has no space between them.

To check which packages are affected, run this command:

Edit: Latest Woof as of 21th Feb 2013 also has this bug.

brcmsmac has not been enabled as module, but...the option is now visible....so it is almost there. I suppose brcmsmac can be compiled as independent module without need to recompile whole kernel.

Raffy would like the brcmsmac module....I believe.

I believe that option would give more supported chips for brcmfmac....but not sure....I have always enabled it.

/lib/modules/3.2.29 ....in 3.8.0 kernel Precise Puppy. No need to say more. Some DISTRO_SPECS rows need disabling for 3.8 kernel version.

ar5523 is a Linux kernel driver for the Atheros AR5005UG (802.11b/g) and AR5005UX (802.11a/b/g) USB wireless LAN chipsets.

Firmware is required for device operation.

This pc has a hauppage pvr card in it:
Multimedia video controller Internext Compression Inc iTVC16 (CX23416)
Video Decoder (rev 01)
With other recent pups if I put the firmware for it in /lib/firmware
and then reboot, I can use the vlc option to open the capture device
PVR and watch tv but that isn't working with this 380 kernel.

On my Asus A7V400-MX with 500 mb RAM, using Puppy Precise 5.4.93 .iso burned to a DVD, the BootFlash Installer and the Puppy Universal Installer both produce a USB that, when it is booted, unfortunately states

"Searching for Puppy files. puppy_precise_5.4.93.sfs not found."

And, as well, this being Awards Season in North America, I would like to nominate Sage an 'Understatement of the Year' award for the comment

"Remarkably slow loading and initial setup ...."

That message is usually associated with problems when booting off CD/DVDs. It would be interesting to know if the ISObooter method here gets you a working USB drive

I'm getting configure errors, I wanted to learn to make .pets, and downloaded Mplayer, Httrack, and Rhythmcat and in each typing ./configure gets me the same error:

If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'.
