Cedarview graphics support in Slacko |
|
The "Cedarview" model of the Intel Atom CPU has the GMA3600/3650 onboard graphics chip, and although these GPU's carry an Intel model prefix, they're actually designed and manufactured by Imagination Technologies, with the model name "PowerVR".
Some examples of products which are based on this CPU/GPU are:
Asus EeePC X101CH
Aspire ONE D270
Intel desktop board D2500CC
Intel desktop board DN2800MT
Support for these graphics devices in Linux is patchy!
Different versions of Puppy have been tried with these devices, often resulting in X failing to launch.
At best, some versions of Puppy have successfully booted to the desktop, but with incorrect, or limited resolution.
Thanks to testing by forum member JustGreg, here are the suggested solutions for Puppy Slacko:

1. Slacko 5.3.3-PAE - simple solution
Slacko 5.3.3-PAE contains the psb_gfx DRM kernel module, which should allow it to fully boot to the desktop ...
but this particular psb_gfx driver did not have full GMA3600 compatibility enabled, so the resolution will be limited.
The simplest solution should be to install this upgraded psb_gfx driver, now attached.
Once the dotpet is installed, go to -
Menu > Setup > Xorg Video Wizard > XorgWizard
and choose <Probe>
After X relaunches, the resolution might still be incorrect, so go to -
Menu > Setup > Xorg Video Wizard > Resolution changer

2. Slacko 5.3.3-PAE - full third-party Xorg driver update
There's a proprietary "PowerVR" Xorg driver provided by Intel, partly binary, partly source code, here -
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21938
This is a full-featured 2D/3D graphics driver. I have successfully compiled it for Slacko 5.3.3-PAE, but this is still quite cutting edge and untested.
I have sent a private message to two forum members who may test this. Results to follow later.

3. Slacko 5.4-PAE
The situation with Slacko 5.4 is messy. There's a new in-kernel driver available - gma500_gfx
which 01micko has made available as a dotpet here -
http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/pet_packages-slacko14/gma500_gfx-3.4.17-PAE-slacko14.pet
but the installation and configuration (as tested by JustGreg) is complicated, especially since Slacko 5.4PAE fails to launch X, and all setup must be done from the command prompt. You can follow JustGreg's instructions here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=671783#671783
Personally, I think a better option for Cedarview users is Slacko 5.3.3.

GIMP on Slacko Subject description: What version of Slack is needed for GIMP 2.8 |
|
Thanks for all the help. You have definitely identified the that my Cedarview board is the problem. I was able to get Slacko 5.3.3 to boot on it. Unfortunately it does not seem to accept GIMP 2.8, only GIMP 2.6. Any suggestions.

Asus EeePc 1011cx with GMA3600.
All the instructions from Tempestouos, solution

but this particular psb_gfx driver did not have full GMA3600 compatibility enabled, so the resolution will be limited.

Menu > Setup > Xorg Video Wizard > XorgWizard
and choose <Probe>
After X relaunches, the resolution might still be incorrect, so go to -
Menu > Setup > Xorg Video Wizard > Resolution changer
...first option Slacko 5.3.3 PAE downloaded with wget, added pet file, XorgWizard...Prove...xorgwizard...but, same terrible 800x600 resolution: I can not have other option than 800x600 ...no 1024x600 option!!
I am using LIVE mode...not installed in hard disk

That's not related to the The "Cedarview" graphics device under discussion in this thread.
The Asus Eee PC 1005 has the Intel GMA 3150 "Pineview" graphics chip, which is a true Intel chip.

I think it would be possible to manually modify several Xorg configuration files ...
but the easiest option, as 01micko explained here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=697866#697866
is just to use Slacko 5.5-PAE or upup-precise. No additional dotpets are necessary in this case.
